1. ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: Brouhaha Tickets on Sale

Join us for the ASEE ERM Brouhaha—our annual social gathering where you can catch up with old friends and make new connections. Our Brouhaha will be on Tuesday, June 26th, 7-9pm at the Clark Planetarium. Located in downtown Salt Lake City near the Convention Center and next to the TRAX Planetarium stop, there will be plenty to see and do at the Clark Planetarium! Enjoy the ERM annual awards ceremony, meet this year’s Apprentice Faculty Grant awardees, and explore the Planetarium’s impressive meteorite collection. There will be a DJ playing music, and the dinner will be catered by one of Salt Lake City’s top caterers, LUX catering.

Tickets are $75 if purchased in advance, and $85 at the door. We would appreciate early registrations, so that we can provide the caterer with accurate attendance information. 5. CALL FOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR NOMINATIONS: Journal of Engineering Education (JEE)
The Journal of Engineering Education, which serves to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education, is currently accepting applications for one or more volunteer Associate Editors. Associate Editors are an integral part of the JEE Editorial Board and ensure the quality and timeliness of published material. Associate Editors serve 3-year terms that may be renewed. An Associate Editor’s primary responsibilities are (1) reading manuscripts submitted to JEE, (2) recruiting and selecting appropriate, well qualified and responsible reviewers to review the manuscripts, (3) synthesizing reviewers’ comments and feedback, (4) integrating that feedback with their own evaluative and constructive report reflecting the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, and (5) making a recommendation to the JEE Editor. Other duties include attending quarterly (virtual) meetings of the JEE Editorial Board, selecting the annual Wickenden award winner, and completing various tasks related to maintaining the quality and relevance of JEE such as special issues and guest editorials. Generally, an Associate Editor will be assigned 12-16 manuscripts annually, and the duties of the position will require approximately 8 – 12 hours per month. To qualify for the position, an Associate Editor must have an earned doctoral degree, be an active researcher in engineering education or a related field, and have experience publishing in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education research. Preferred qualifications include previous experience as a peer reviewer of a scholarly journal, publication experience in peer-reviewed journals, and rank at the associate professor (or equivalent) level. In particular, Associate Editors with expertise in P-12 engineering education, learning sciences, and quantitative methods are sought, but all areas will be considered. On October 11 and 12, 2018, the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada is hosting the 12th International Conference on Interactive Mobile Communication, Technologies and Learning. The conference will cover all aspects of mobile learning as well as the emergence of mobile communication technologies, infrastructures and services and their implications for education, business, governments and society. For this year, the focus is on “Mobile Technologies and Applications for the Internet of Things”.

7. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Workshop on Teaching for Post Docs and New Faculty

A workshop coming up at the University of Colorado Boulder in July may be of interest to post docs and new faculty. The Evidence-Based Introduction to Teaching (EBIT) is a one-week student-centered learning experience where participants develop curricula for STEM college classrooms using evidence-based teaching methods. Participants apply research principles of design, build, test and iterate to specific course curriculum development. Relevant literature on evidence-based teaching techniques will be highlighted.

The University of Cape Town is pleased to invite you to the 2019 Research in Engineering Education Symposium. REES 2019 will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from July 10-12, 2019.

REES is the biennial symposium of the Research in Engineering Education Network (REEN), an international community of scholars interested in conducting high quality work in, and advancing the field of, engineering education research. The Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) awards travel grants annually to worthy graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, staff members, or senior ranking faculty transitioning into engineering education. The Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program is designed to encourage and honor promising new educators and/or researchers who have demonstrated commitment to innovation in teaching and/or have the potential for substantial contributions to engineering education research. Each grant consists of honoraria of $2,000 that is intended to cover travel and conference expenses. Grant recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the annual ASEE conference, including two ERM events, and are highly encouraged to attend at least one workshop. As an active member of the engineering education research community, you are invited to participate in a virtual card-sorting activity that will contribute to the development of a framework that characterizes what it means for engineering education research and development (R&D) to have an “impact”. By participating in this study, you will develop a better understanding of how “research impact” is defined in scholarly literature, advance our understanding of what it looks like in our context, and contribute to the development of a shared language among engineering education researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. This research is supported by National Science Foundation grant number EEC-1564629. (If you participated in Fall 2016, you can ignore this invitation.

The activity will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Your responses will be confidential, and anonymous; and you are free to exit the activity at any time. If you choose to participate, please complete the activity within the next two weeks. 6. REQUEST FOR RESEARCH HELP: META-ANALYSIS OF IMPACT OF INNOVATIONS IN UNDERGRADUATE STEM ON UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS

Dear Members of the Engineering Education Research Community,

I am leading a team that is conducting a meta-analysis of how innovations in undergraduate STEM courses have impacted traditional achievement gaps experienced by students who are 1) female, 2) members of underrepresented minorities (African-American, Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian), 3) from low-income backgrounds, and/or 4) first-in-family to complete college. This project is a follow-on to a paper that our group published in PNAS in 2014, showing that for all students in STEM, active learning has large benefits compared to traditional lecturing (http://www.pnas.org/content/111/23/8410.abstract).

Because it is extremely important for us to include as many datasets on this question as possible–published or unpublished, and whether they showed an impact or not–I am inquiring to find out if you have data on whether course innovations you’ve been involved in affected the performance of any or all of the types of students listed above in a negative, neutral, or positive way.

9. SAVE THE DATE: REFLECTION IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION WORKSHOP IN SEATTLE, SEPTEMBER 14-15, 2017

The Consortium to Promote Reflection in Engineering Education (CPREE) and the Center for Engineering Learning & Teaching (CELT) at the University of Washington will be hosting a 1.5 day workshop on the use of reflection to support engineering student learning. The intent is to bring together engineering educators who are interested in the topic of reflection, to learn from each other and to synthesize across ideas. As a group, we plan to discuss how we can leverage reflection more broadly in engineering classrooms, generate a set of research questions that would inform the field, and discuss how we can use reflection to link E activities to the STM parts of STEAM. Institute Description
The ASCN Leadership Institute is designed to support campus change agents in using institutional change strategies to advance STEM change projects to greater scale and sustainability. Campus teams will bring existing projects, envisioned or started, that they need help bringing to scale or longer-term sustainability. Campus teams may be struggling with leadership turnover, lack of resources or infrastructure, team dynamics, shifting project goals and priorities, or other challenges. Institute participants will learn about the national context and drivers for change, theories and frameworks of change and the logistics of managing change projects to advance them to scale and sustainability. Institute participants will be mentored throughout the year by STEM leaders, researchers, and change agents who have experience with reform projects.

Institute Dates and Location
Dates: Aug 2-4, 2017; Location: Portland, OR; The Institute will begin in late afternoon on August 2, 2017 and end by 4 pm on August 4, 2017. Virtual progress meetings will also be scheduled throughout the following year, and mentors will make one site visit to each team’s institution.

Institute Applications and Costs

Applications will be accepted online at http://serc.carleton.edu/ASCN/sli17/index.html from February 1-28, 2017. Institute tuition of $2500 covers on-site meeting costs for up to 3 team members (programming, access to mentors, group meals, and 3 nights lodging) as well as follow-up activities. Additional team members (up to 2) can attend for an additional cost (approximately $750/person). Tuition does not cover travel expenses to Portland. A small number of need-based tuition and travel scholarships are available.

14. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: RESEARCH EXPERIENCE ON THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT) FOR UNDERGRADUATES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA

The Computer Science Department at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL) will hold a ten-week 2017 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) on the Internet of Things http://iotreu.cs.ucf.edu/. REU students will be trained in research-based theory and applications of the technologies used in this fast-moving interdisciplinary field. The REU students will join well-established research groups under the close supervision of faculty with expertise in security, privacy, hardware design, data analytics, healthcare simulations, and social computing.

REU program dates
May 22, 2017 – July 28, 2017

Eligibility requirements
– Sophomore, junior or senior undergraduates
– Majors: computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and information technology
– Must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
– Minimum overall GPA 2.7
