ERM Announcements, March 15, 2021

Dear ERM members,

Oh my, the first Monday after Daylight Savings begins in the spring is always a little rough! Losing that extra hour of sleep over the weekend seems to make Monday extra challenging. My lucky colleagues in Arizona (and in other places around the world) don’t have to deal with this and are enjoying their normal sleep routine. I’m a little jealous, as the alarm felt like it went off way too early today!

I wanted to thank those of you who gave feedback on the ERM survey about the upcoming 2021 conference. We met with some of the ASEE leadership last week and found out some additional information about the conference that I will share with you. The contract with Long Beach has a cancellation fee of over $1 million dollars. Given that conditions are improving in the country and in California relating to COVID, ASEE has not been able to get out of the contract and thus are planning to hold a physical conference. That being said, I have passed along the results of our survey to share perspectives from the ERM division.

The current plan is that there will be a physical conference the week of July 26 and a virtual conference the week of August 2. Many of our members shared that hosting the virtual conference that week is not ideal. We have passed along this perspective to the ASEE leadership. As I receive additional information about the conference, I will share this along to the ERM list-serv.

In the meantime, all lead authors who have submitted a paper to the ERM division should have received an e-mail from Stephanie Cutler asking what your preference for presenting would be (virtual or physical) if your paper is accepted.

These are challenging times for everyone, and I want to thank the ASEE leadership for considering how to make both a physical and a virtual conference possible for members and understand that the planning of this event has been very challenging.

Chairs Updates: Our proposal to the ASEE Board for a Year of Impact on Racial Equity was approved! The year will start after the 2021 Annual Conference ends. We will need your help to make the year of impact as powerful as possible. Thanks to all the quarterly all-hands meeting attendees who provided great ideas for the different focus areas that we proposed.

We are also working with ASEE to raise visibility and address an issue with ASEE conference papers that become inaccessible to screen readers during the formatting process, and also a bigger issue that may need Author’s Kit revisions to make papers accessible prior to uploading.

JEE ANNOUNCEMENT: JEE Star Reviewers

In 2017, the Journal of Engineering Education began recognizing outstanding reviewers for JEE with Star Reviewer Awards. Reviewers who have completed three or more reviews in last year and who Editorial Board members nominate based on the quality of their reviews are considered for this award. This year, we had 31 nominees for Star Reviewer. Editorial Board members Jennifer Chiu, Nadia Kellam and Noah Schroeder read the reviews that these nominees submitted in 2020. Features of these outstanding reviews emerged from their selection process, which include: review includes a summary of what the article was about; review provides positive ways forward (not just a critique); review provides notes to the editor; review includes some discussion of reviewer positionality; review demonstrates critical thinking about the manuscript; and review is detailed. This type of feedback is invaluable in cultivating our community of scholars in engineering education.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: ASEE Webinar: Learning in the Time of Coronavirus

ASEE Webinar: Learning in the time of coronavirus, March 30, 2021 – 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM ET. – https://resources.asee.org/course_catalog/learning_in_the_time_of_coronavirus/

The past year has signaled a monumental change in engineering education with the near universal shift to remote learning. Although this shift occurred suddenly, engineering education has undergone several shifts in the past 100 years. In this webinar, Karl Smith (Purdue University) and Rocío Chavela Guerra (American Society for Engineering Education) will summarize major shifts in engineering education, such as the shift to outcomes-based accreditation and an emergent shift to address justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. They will share insights, lessons learned, and will discuss implications for the current shift to remote learning. The webinar will close with recommendations for course redesign to enhance learning in the time of coronavirus.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: NETI-3D workshop registration opened

NETI-3D will be held May 26-27, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm, EST, each day using Zoom. This online workshop for instructors teaching engineering or engineering technology focuses on effective teaching in a virtual environment. Topics explored in the workshop include student motivation, active engagement, assessment and adopting an inclusive mindset in online environments. The National Effective Teaching Institute has been given since 1991, reaching nearly 2500 participants from over 350 different schools. The registration fee is $400 per participant, and includes an electronic version of presentation materials with literature reviews of effective online teaching practices. It will be directed by Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince. NETI-3 will be highly interactive and will provide opportunities for the participants to plan applications of the workshop content to their own courses. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: Virtual conference on Character, Engineering, and Technology

On March 18-20, 2021, Wake Forest University and the Oxford Character Project at the University of Oxford are hosting a free virtual conference on Character and the Professions (https://leadershipandcharacter.wfu.edu/events/upcoming/). The international conference will feature a keynote conversation in partnership with the Face to Face Speaker Forum featuring former U.S. Secretaries of State, Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell. The remainder of the conference will examine the role of character in six professions: business, engineering and technology, law, medicine, public life, and religious leadership. A plenary session will explore the relationship between diversity and character in various professional settings. Confirmed speakers include prominent scholars from Carnegie Mellon, Edinburgh, Harvard, Penn, Stanford, UVA, and Wake Forest, along with leading practitioners across six fields.

The session, “Character, Engineering, and Technology,” on Friday, March 19, from 1:00-3:30pm, may be of particular interest. It features Shannon Vallor, Professor and Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh and author of Technology and the Virtues (her bio is below). The panel that follows will include:

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Applications being accepted to the 5th Dissertation Institute

We are pleased to announce the 5th Dissertation Institute (DI), an interactive workshop for underrepresented (African American, Native American, Pacific Island and Hispanic American) graduate students in engineering. The 2021 DI will take place July 10th – 16th on the University of Michigan campus.* The Institute is funded by the National Science Foundation and hosted by University of Texas, Dallas and Virginia Tech. The primary goal is to address issues that prolong completion times for those at the dissertation proposal preparation and dissertation completion stages of the targeted population.

The week-long event will focus on skills and strategies needed to successfully complete the dissertation process as well as provide networking opportunities to build connections for future collaborative career advancement. Institute participants will build new writing habits, work on their dissertation or dissertation proposal, and learn skills that will help them continue making progress when they return to their institutions. Participants will be housed in a private room; will share a bathroom with one other participant; receive meals; and be reimbursed for travel costs up to $500. As a part of the application process, participants will be asked to identify barriers that have impeded their progress to completing their dissertation and to provide suggestions for additional topics to be presented.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: First Year Engineering Experience Conference

The First Year Programs Division of ASEE is accepting paper abstracts and workshop proposals to be presented at the 2021 First Year Engineering Experience (FYEE) Conference. This year’s conference will be held virtually on August 9-10, 2021. Paper abstracts and workshop proposals are due March 22, 2021 with draft papers due May 10, 2021.

We recognize that a major strength of FYEE is the networking opportunities it provides. In addition, we are excited that as a virtual conference the cost of participation will be highly affordable (estimated to be $50-$75 per attendee)!

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Graduate Student Research on Teaching Development Programs
I am a doctoral candidate with the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Cincinnati, conducting research on teaching development programs for future faculty. The first step in the research involves understanding how our teachers are trained to handle their teaching responsibilities. You are being requested to fill a survey describing any teaching training program you may have implemented in your institution for your students, including but not limited to the teaching assistants. This survey is part of a research study at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Engineering Education. It has 16 questions and will take approximately 10 minutes for you to complete. Using your responses, we will attempt to inform the greater engineering education community about practices that have been helpful in better preparing our future faculty. Your institution’s name will be kept confidential and none of your responses will be linked back to you.

CALL FOR SURVEY PARTICIPATION: Study on relevance of different teaching techniques
Our group is examining the relevance of different teaching techniques and their frequency of use. Our intent is to publish these results and to make the information available for use by the engineering education community. We would appreciate you sharing this link with your Division.

We have assembled survey questions to help us assess the importance and frequency of use of various teaching techniques. This survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and consists of multiple choice questions, a few short fill ins, and an opportunity for free form comments. As you complete the survey, we ask that you consider a specific course that you have taught and answer the questions based on this single course. All responses will be confidential.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Scholar in the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education at Penn State
Know anyone who is interested in engineering education or faculty development? We have a new opportunity in the Leonhard Center!

The Leonhard Center is seeking a Post-doctoral Scholar to take a leadership role for several Center projects including one that supports the College’s Engineering Equity and Inclusion Initiative. This study will explore how College of Engineering faculty and staff create a positive and inclusive culture for all students by better understanding current faculty and staff practices and beliefs around diversity and inclusion. The findings of the study will be used to design workshops to support our faculty and staff (and, by extension, our students) in moving forward with creating an inclusive culture within the Penn State College of Engineering. Additional projects may include collaborating with faculty to design and evaluate projects in engineering education and offering college-wide workshops on innovative instructional practices and educational research.

The position requires the ability to design and conduct research using qualitative and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in communication and collaboration. Minimum requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in an appropriate field such as engineering education, educational psychology, or higher education. Knowledge of current trends in engineering education is desirable.

The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech invites applications for Visiting Professor position(s) at the Assistant or Associate rank. Virginia Tech seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in engineering education research ranging from pre-kindergarten through college and into engineering practice. Candidates must have a PhD or similar degree, with at least one degree in engineering, education, or a related field.

The Visiting Professor will primarily teach in the first-year engineering ENGE 1215 & 1216: Foundations of Engineering sequence, which focuses on problem solving, the engineering design cycle, and career paths in engineering; the course uses tools such as Solidworks and MATLAB. Based on enrollment needs, the Visiting Professor may teach other courses in the department’s undergraduate program, including courses in the Pathways Innovation Minor. The teaching load will be three courses in each of the academic year semesters. Other responsibilities include pursuing an independent or collaborative research program of the candidate’s interests and other duties as assigned.

These one-year positions are open to candidates along a continuum of career stages, with possible interest for recent PhD graduates, faculty on research leave, and industry professionals seeking to reconnect with teaching and research. Candidates anticipating receiving a PhD in the coming months may apply, but should have their degree in hand at the start of the contract.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Fellow for NSF RIEF Grant at Georgia Tech Department of Biomedical Engineering
The School of Biomedical Engineering/Studio for Transforming Engineering Learning and Research (STELAR) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow. This team member will help carry out the work of our new National Science Foundation Research Initiation in Engineering Formation (NSF RIEF) grant titled “Research Initiation: Exploring the Role of Story-Driven Learning to Foster Empathy in the Professional Formation of Engineers” (Award #2025080). This funding is for engaging in department wide research to explore the use of diverse learning activities within the BME department that potentially foster empathy in our undergraduate students.

Knowledge and Skill Qualifications:

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have a PhD* in educational psychology, social psychology, higher education, engineering education, or a related field. This is important since a perspective and research experience from outside of engineering is needed to conduct this type of educational research within an engineering department. The engineering faculty PI will depend on this role to provide a social/learning sciences perspective to guide the research. This postdoctoral research fellow will assist the PI in all aspects of the design and implementation of the research as well as in the data collection and analysis activities over the course of this work. The ideal candidate should have demonstrated ability to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis, although our primary need is qualitative.

ERM Announcements, March 1, 2021

Dear ERM members,

Happy Monday and happy first day of March to you!  I don’t really know where February went.  It seemed to go by with a blur this year.  However, I am very excited that it is March.  Here in the northern hemisphere, spring is just around the corner.  I am starting to see some signs of spring here in central PA.  I can hear lots of birds chirping in the morning.  And just today, I noticed that there are small sprouts for my daffodils in my front yard.  There is still a lot of snow that needs to melt here, but the weather is forecasting for warm weather over the next week.  And as someone who does not enjoy cold, that makes me very happy!

A couple of reminders for you.  In just one week, ASEE paper drafts are due!  Make sure you get your papers in before the deadline!

The past year has signaled a monumental change in engineering education with the near universal shift to remote learning. Although this shift occurred suddenly, engineering education has undergone several shifts in the past 100 years. In this webinar, Karl Smith (Purdue University) and Rocío Chavela Guerra (American Society for Engineering Education) will summarize major shifts in engineering education, such as the shift to outcomes-based accreditation and an emergent shift to address justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. They will share insights, lessons learned, and will discuss implications for the current shift to remote learning. The webinar will close with recommendations for course redesign to enhance learning in the time of coronavirus.

  1. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT:  NETI-3D workshop registration opened

 

NETI-3D will be held May 26-27, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm, EST, each day using Zoom. This online workshop for instructors teaching engineering or engineering technology focuses on effective teaching in a virtual environment. Topics explored in the workshop include student motivation, active engagement, assessment and adopting an inclusive mindset in online environments. The National Effective Teaching Institute has been given since 1991, reaching nearly 2500 participants from over 350 different schools. The registration fee is $400 per participant, and includes an electronic version of presentation materials with literature reviews of effective online teaching practices. It will be directed by Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince. NETI-3 will be highly interactive and will provide opportunities for the participants to plan applications of the workshop content to their own courses.   1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:  Graduate Student Research on Teaching Development Programs

I am a doctoral candidate with the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Cincinnati, conducting research on teaching development programs for future faculty. The first step in the research involves understanding how our teachers are trained to handle their teaching responsibilities. You are being requested to fill a survey describing any teaching training program you may have implemented in your institution for your students, including but not limited to the teaching assistants. This survey is part of a research study at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Engineering Education. It has 16 questions and will take approximately 10 minutes for you to complete.  Using your responses, we will attempt to inform the greater engineering education community about practices that have been helpful in better preparing our future faculty. Your institution’s name will be kept confidential and none of your responses will be linked back to you.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  Postdoctoral Fellow for NSF RIEF Grant at Georgia Tech Department of Biomedical Engineering 

The School of Biomedical Engineering/Studio for Transforming Engineering Learning and Research (STELAR) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow. This team member will help carry out the work of our new National Science Foundation Research Initiation in Engineering Formation (NSF RIEF) grant titled “Research Initiation: Exploring the Role of Story-Driven Learning to Foster Empathy in the Professional Formation of Engineers” (Award #2025080). This funding is for engaging in department wide research to explore the use of diverse learning activities within the BME department that potentially foster empathy in our undergraduate students. 

Knowledge and Skill Qualifications: The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have a PhD* in educational psychology, social psychology, higher education, engineering education, or a related field. This is important since a perspective and research experience from outside of engineering is needed to conduct this type of educational research within an engineering department. The engineering faculty PI will depend on this role to provide a social/learning sciences perspective to guide the research. This postdoctoral research fellow will assist the PI in all aspects of the design and implementation of the research as well as in the data collection and analysis activities over the course of this work. The ideal candidate should have demonstrated ability to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis, although our primary need is qualitative.

Our department’s RED grant is focused on inclusion and diversity as a path to improving undergraduate engineering education. The focus on inclusion is in two parts; (1) Developing students who are more inclusive when they work on engineering teams and (2) Approaching engineering problems in a way that takes an inclusive approach to users and the populations affected by engineering work. A perspective on our approach to inclusivity in engineering education can be found in a recent JEE editorial. This position will be centered on working on the second focus described above, a integrating a more inclusive approach to engineering design and technical skills into our undergraduate curriculum. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to a curricular change and research program that seeks to answer the following research questions: 1) how can inclusion promoting interventions be sustainably integrated into the curriculum, 2) how do the curriculum modifications impact students’ interpersonal skills and understanding of inclusive engineering design practices, and 3) what system and structural changes are effective in supporting organizational change? We are seeking a candidate who has a strong record of designing and executing qualitative research studies. Qualitative interviewing, participant observation, state-of-the-art analytic techniques and code book development are the essential tools we seek. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to recruit and mentor a team of undergraduate research assistants.

Required Qualifications: PhD in psychology, organizational behavior, organizational justice, organizational change, sociology, engineering education, learning science, ethnography, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have demonstrated ability to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis, although our primary need is qualitative.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  Open Clinical Faculty of Practice Position, Department of Engineering Education, The Ohio State University

The Department of Engineering Education (EED) in the College of Engineering (CoE) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor of Practice or Professor of Practice to start July 1, 2021 (date is flexible). We seek applicants with an industrial background to teach in and manage an existing honors program involving both engineering and business students in the area of product commercialization. The faculty member hired for this position is expected to advance students’ interpersonal interactions (especially in team environments), critical thinking, and ability to create value based upon user needs in addition to traditional knowledge and skills in business and engineering. The faculty member hired is expected to teach engineering honors courses in the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) program and others, as may be required to facilitate entrepreneurial-minded initiatives within EED and the college, and lead development of the IBE program in the role of Director.

Integrated Business and Engineering Honors Program:  The Integrated Business and Engineering Program (IBE) at The Ohio State University (https://engineering.osu.edu/academics/integrated-business-engineering-honors-program) is a four-year program that supplements standard curricula in the disciplines of business and engineering with a sequence of dedicated IBE courses and seminars focused on experiential, entrepreneurial and multidisciplinary learning with core courses leading to a minor in the opposite discipline.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  Tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Engineering Communication at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Canada 

The Centre for Engineering Professional Practice and Engineering Education at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Engineering Communication (position 29026), with a start date of July 1, 2021.  Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to Engineering Communication and/or the broader field of Engineering Education. Experience in Communication fields and/or teaching Engineering Communication curricula to EAL speakers is a strong asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the technical and professional Engineering Communication curriculum at the undergraduate level, develop and teach courses in Engineering Communication or Engineering Education at the graduate level, initiate and sustain an independent, funded research program involving graduate student supervision with engagement in national or international networks, and provide service to the Price Faculty of Engineering, and larger campus and professional communities.
