ERM Announcements, July 17, 2023

Dear ERM members,

 

Wonderful to see so many of you at the ASEE conference last month! My immense gratitude goes to Dr. Allison Godwin (Cornell) for her leadership as Chair of the ERM Division for the past two years. It is a joy to send my first newsletter! As will be the process for the next two years, I will send these on the 1st and 15th of each month or the first working day following.

 

My apologies for the late start with this newsletter. ASEE has been working with me to resolve some technical difficulties in the transition to my role that prevented me from sending out the first newsletter in July.

 

I want to use my comments to express gratitude to a few individuals who played a key role in crafting the ERM Program for ASEE:

 

  • I thank Dr. Catherine Berdanier (Penn State) and Dr. Benjamin Ahn (Ohio State) for their leadership in crafting a sizeable and high-quality program for the conference this year.

 

  • Thank you to the ERM Directors Dr. Cassandra McCall (Utah State), Dr. James Pembridge (Embry-Riddle – Daytona Beach), Dr. Nicole Pitterson (Virginia Tech), and Dr. Matilde Luz Sánchez-Peña (University of Buffalo) for their leadership in the special generative session on Wednesday (Research to Practice: Answering the Call to Action). Also, thanks to Drs. McCall and Pembridge for their service as directors to ERM. And welcome to the newly elected directors, Dr. Bryce Hughes (Montana State) and Dr. Jessica Swenson (University of Buffalo)!

 

  • Thanks to Dr. Tershia A. Pinder-Grover (University of Michigan) for delivering an inspirational, practical, and tactical plenary address on Wednesday. The talk was titled Leveraging Your Agency to Promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the Engineering Education Ecosystem, and as one who attended, I left with a much-needed practical and tactical toolkit on building equitable systems in my roles as a researcher and educator.

  1. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: SEE is looking for new Associate Editors

 

Studies in Engineering Education invites applications for new Associate Editors. As the journal grows, we are excited to expand the editorial team. Associate editors (AEs) are responsible for soliciting external reviews of articles, synthesizing the reviews and their own reading of the article, and making a recommendation to the journal editors. Potential AEs should be comfortable with qualitative and interpretive research paradigms.   1. OPEN ACCESS RESOURCE: The International Handbook of Engineering Education Research (IHEER)

 

The International Handbook of Engineering Education Research (IHEER) has recently been released and is available Open Access (through support from NSF). This comprehensive handbook offers a broad overview of contemporary research on engineering education and its practical application. Drawing on the work of 100 expert contributors from over 20 countries, this volume covers both emergent and established areas of research within engineering education, giving voice to newcomers to the field as well as perspectives from established experts.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Upcoming National Effective Teaching Institute offering – NETI-2A Online

 

Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will be offering the advanced workshop NETI-2A, Forming, Managing & Assessing Student Teams, August 7-8, 2023 1:00-5:00 pm EDT each day. This workshop will develop participants’ ability to manage student teams – particularly in the context of team-based learning strategies. Teamwork can be taught, but students require guidance, practice, and feedback. They also need to be held accountable for their behavior. Research shows that there are best practices for how to form teams, manage teams, and assess teams to improve student outcomes while maintaining an inclusive and welcoming learning environment. NETI-2A participants do not need to have attended NETI-1 but should already be familiar with learning strategies that require students to interact in groups and teams. The registration fee for the workshop is $500 per participant, and includes an electronic version of presentation materials and other resources. There is benefit to having a team of faculty from the same university attend our workshops! For every two paid registrations, send a third participant for free!

 

  1. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Student panels at FIE 2023

 

Hello students!

 

The technical program and organizing committees for FIE 2023 would like to invite you to submit a proposal for undergraduate and/or graduate student panels. Since this is the first time FIE offers this opportunity, we encourage topics of the type:

 

  • First year experiences and policies,
  • Student experiences in their respective programs and campuses,
  • Interdisciplinary capstone projects,
  • Broadening participation (e.g. DEI, HSI, HBCU, MSI, Land Grant),
  • Mental health (e.g. Well-being, community building),
  • Governance at engineering schools,
  • Others (e.g. AI Tools-ChatGPT, Transformational Engineering Education)

 

Please follow the instructions and rubrics for panels under submission guidelines on our website. The approximate time allotted for each student panel is 40 minutes. Digitalization offers new frontiers for the organization of engineering education, and will require new (possibly post-digital) pedagogical models and practices to be fully realized for the future.  We welcome your contributions on how this will manifest in the Problem Based Learning paradigm.

Position Announcements

 

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Researcher Position Available in Engineering Education at Virginia Tech

 

The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to take on a leadership role within the Engineering Competencies, Learning, and Inclusive Practices for Success (ECLIPS) Lab. This role will be funded by the National Science Foundation funded project: CAREER: Sustainable Racial Equity: Creating a New Generation of Engineering Education DEI Leaders (NSF# 2144978). This project aims to explore the beliefs, experiences, educational training, and research that supports the development of effective engineering education leaders who are assuming roles focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Postdoctoral Associate will work closely with Dr. Homero Murzi to coordinate interviews with DEI leaders across the nation, develop and deploy a nationwide survey, develop educational interventions, and lead ECLIPS lab research activities.

  1. POSITIONS ANNOUNCEMENT: Two Postdoctoral Scholars in Engineering Education Research at Texas A&M University

Job Summary: Texas A&M University’s Multidisciplinary Engineering department is seeking two postdoctoral scholars in the area of engineering education. The postdoctoral scholars will participate in data collection and analysis, conduct research and assessments with faculty and students, prepare manuscripts, present at conferences, and participate in grant writing. The position will also provide the opportunity for scholars to develop personalized professional development plans to support their own career advancement. Candidates nearing graduation are encouraged to apply. The successful candidates for this position are expected to have strong quantitative and qualitative research knowledge and skills and excellent communication capabilities, especially writing skills. Specific details about each of the two positions are provided:

 

–       One of the positions will enable the scholar to research, develop, and implement innovative strategies at the college level that promote effective learning in engineering education and contribute to the methodology of forming the engineer of 2050. How do we prepare students for jobs that do not yet exist, technologies not yet invented, and problems we are unaware of? How do current technologies, such as ChatGPT, impact the learning process? Increasing the success of students involves a complex network of strategies and tools that this scholar will incorporate. The scholar will work alongside Dr. Kristi Shryock, Frank and Jean Raymond Foundation Inc. Endowed Associate Professor, and will be co-mentored by Dr. George Ligler, Professor and Dean’s Excellence Chair in Multidisciplinary Engineering and member of the National Academy of Engineering.

 

–       The second position will focus on research on practice and effectiveness of multi- and inter-disciplinary engineering education, programming and outcomes of high-impact practices, and how broad definitions of diversity can maximize positive results in engineering education. Key research questions will investigate characteristics of existing students attracted to innovative academic programs, how these programs can increase added value for students, how recruiting can be improved, and how successes can be transferred across programs and institutions. They will work alongside Dr. Kelly Brumbelow, Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Multidisciplinary Engineering, and will be co-mentored by Dr. George Ligler, Professor and Dean’s Excellence Chair in Multidisciplinary Engineering and member of the National Academy of Engineering.

 

Required Qualifications: Hold a PhD in an engineering discipline and have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career that includes a focus on research in engineering education at the college level. Candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills and are expected to work well in a team setting.

 

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as can be arranged with a two-year appointment envisaged, contingent upon successful evaluation after year one.

 

Salary Range: $54,000 to $61,000 per year, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

 

Hours: 40 hours per week

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Contract Faculty, First Year Engineering, NYU Tandon School of Engineering

 

NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a full time, non-tenured, renewable faculty position in General Engineering at the level of Industry Assistant or Associate Professor, with a start date of August or September 1, 2023. The initial appointment will be for two to three academic years.

 

The General Engineering Program manages the first-year engineering course EG 1004 Introduction to Engineering and Design which is required for all engineering majors. We are seeking a dedicated faculty member who can advance our students’ knowledge through prior experience. This course consists of weekly lectures, labs, and recitation sections and is team-taught by a group of faculty who are supported by a large team of teaching assistants.  The Contract Faculty will teach the five recitation sections per semester in addition to supporting course operations.

 

The primary role of EG faculty is in guiding students through the course, orienting students to the field of engineering, improving technical communication skills, explaining the engineering design process, and introducing tools, resources, and terminology to first-year engineering students. EG 1004 faculty are expected to mentor student teams and provide guidance for open-ended semester-long design projects and hands-on laboratory experiments. The EG faculty will also assist with the operations of the course. This includes management and review of the teaching assistants; purchasing equipment and materials for projects and labs; designing course material and content; and maintaining or updating standards for course assessment and delivery.

The Defense Personnel Analytics Center (DPAC) under the Department of Defense is seeking a researcher to conduct research, development, and implementation of all Career Exploration Program (CEP) instruments and materials, as well as the development and evaluation of new methods and techniques for increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the CEP.
