The Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) awards up to four (4) travel grants annually to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, staff members, or senior ranking faculty who are transitioning into engineering education. The Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program is designed to encourage and honor promising new educators and/or researchers who have demonstrated commitment to innovation in teaching and/or have the potential for substantial contributions to engineering education research. Each grant consists of honoraria of up to $2,000 that is intended to cover travel and conference expenses. Grant recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the annual ASEE conference, including two ERM events, and are highly encouraged to attend at least one workshop. The Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications from accomplished individuals with an earned PhD or equivalent degree in engineering to be Director of our First-Year Engineering Program (http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/First-Year/First-Year/Home/) starting Fall 2018. This is a tenured/tenure-stream, associate or full professor rank position. 5. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Scholar in Engineering Leadership Development

Engineering Leadership Development (ELD), a dynamic, growing program within the College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, invites applications from individuals with a cross-disciplinary background in social sciences, education, management, human resources or related fields with interests in leadership research, education and development as well as familiarity with engineering and/or technical environments. This Limited Term Post-doctoral research position will have an initial contract for one or two years with the possibility of renewal. The Engineering Leadership Development Program, housed within the College’s School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP), provides a challenging, relevant and dynamic world-class program that further engages engineering students in their education while preparing them for effective followership and leadership roles in a technical work environment. The post-doctoral researcher will be part of a team of ELD faculty that are working toward the following goals in support of ELD’s mission: To develop and implement engineering leadership assessments in order to evaluate ELD program effectiveness; To conduct research at the nexus of engineering leadership and education; To further develop curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular programming for leadership education for undergraduate and graduate students in engineering; To provide engineering leadership training to College of Engineering undergraduate and graduate students. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in social sciences, education, management, human resources or related fields with interests in leadership research, education and development. In addition, some background in or familiarity with applied sciences, engineering, technology and/or business would be desired. Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills and good communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will work with the ELD faculty to contribute to current research and establish new research agendas for the ELD program; contribute to grant proposal preparation; design research studies; collect and analyze both qualitative (focus groups, one-on-one interviews) and quantitative (survey) data; publish research in the field of engineering leadership education; and teach a maximum of one engineering leadership course per semester. The ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others, within the College and the wider University as well as with collaborating universities on a multi-disciplinary research team is crucial. Demonstrated productivity in terms of published peer-reviewed journal articles and scientific conference presentations is required. Desired research skills and experiences include intensive interviewing, program implementation, survey design and administration, and data analysis. Proven experience in teaching upper-level undergraduate and/or graduate courses is highly desired. Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills (including spoken/written English) are required. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university and community is required. Experience with leadership in large research projects preferred. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of re-funding and contingent on satisfactory performance. 6. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Graduate Research Assistant in Education Innovations in Hydrology & Water Resources Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette

A Graduate Research Assistantship in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, with a focus on engineering education research, is available at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, USA. The opportunity is preferably available for students who have or are graduating with a MS and want to pursue a PhD, but students who are graduating with a BS and want to pursue a MS will also be considered.

The graduate student will work on a new 4-year project (HydroLearn) funded recently by the National Science Foundation. The project will focus on developing the HydroLearn web-based platform to support faculty to develop, share, and adopt active-learning innovations in key areas of hydrology and water resources engineering. The HydroLearn platform will build on recent developments by the investigators in hydrology education (HydroViz), data sharing (HydroShare) and water resources web apps (Thethys).

Applicants with a strong interest in education research and assessment, with a specialty in hydrology and water resources, are strongly desired. The position offers unique opportunities to work with a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in hydrology and water resources; hydroinformatics; web-based developments; computer science; education assessment; and communication and outreach. 7. CALL FOR PAPERS: 2018 Frontiers in Education Conference

The 48th Annual Frontiers in Education (FIE) conference committee invites you to submit an abstract to present at the 2018 conference. FIE is a major international conference focusing on educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education. We welcome submissions related to educational issues and innovations in computing and engineering at the graduate, undergraduate and pre-college levels.

The 2018 conference theme is Fostering Innovation Through Diversity. In addition to the traditional FIE topics, we are soliciting submissions for the following thematic tracks: diversity/equity/inclusion in engineering/computing, encouraging and teaching innovation, innovation in software engineering education, upward mobility, and EPICS/service-learning.

The 2018 Collaboratory Summer Institute, Designing Student-Centered Learning Experiences, http://www.olin.edu/collaborate/collaboratory/summer-institute/, will be held June 4-8, 2018, at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts. The Olin Collaboratory Summer Institute is an intensive week-long immersion designed to provide participants from around the country and around the world with the opportunity to conceive and catalyze change in education.

Designing Student-Centered Learning Experiences is a weeklong interactive workshop for faculty teams engaged in a curricular change effort at their own institution. Through participatory workshops, immersive design exercises, and presentations from experts, teams of faculty learn about, experience, and practice effective, engaging teaching approaches for new and meaningful STEM curricula. Through the Summer Institute experience, we aim to create a learning environment for participants that

· Embraces creativity, prototyping, iterating, and dreaming big,

· Introduces a set of tools, concepts, and language about student-centered experience design,

· Promotes exploration of your context in a new way and provides insight into what we do here at Olin, and

· Builds community among educators, change agents, designers, and learners.

Alongside participants from other institutions, you and your team will develop concrete action plans for curricular change. Sessions are highly participatory and you will be challenged to continually consider new ideas and put novel approaches into practice. Institute attendees will acquire a new lens through which to view their projects, an expanded repertoire of techniques and solutions, and concrete steps to take their plans forward. Past attendees have included Deans, experienced and new faculty, staff, instructional designs, and faculty developers to name a few. All participants should be prepared to spend the full week deeply engaged in this demanding program. Applicants must apply in teams of at least three and describe a project (in the contemplation, planning, or execution stage) at their home institution.

Who Should Attend: The Institute is designed for faculty and administrators from a wide variety of institutions, including public, private, STEM, liberal arts, community colleges, research universities and K-12 programs, who are currently involved in a curricular change effort.

Application Guidelines: Institute applicants are asked to describe the project on which they are working. Applications will be reviewed on the extent to which the team is likely to benefit from the Institute and advance its project goals. The Computer Science Department at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL) will hold a ten-week 2018 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) on the Internet of Things http://iotreu.cs.ucf.edu/. REU students will be trained in research-based theory and applications of the technologies used in this fast-moving interdisciplinary field. The Center’s mission is to engage current and future engineering leaders in industry and academia as well as representatives of public and private organizations and government in (1) identifying and examining the ethical and societal challenges of engineering, (2) bringing these challenges to the attention of the engineering profession and society, and (3) developing programs and recommendations to address these challenges. As a crucial component of its mission, CEES manages the NAE Online Ethics Center for Engineering and Science (OEC), a dynamic, widely used electronic repository of resources on ethics in science, engineering, research, and education for engineers, scientists, scholars, educators, students, and interested citizens. The CEES Director will work closely with the NAE Executive Officer, NAE Program Office Director, and an appointed CEES Advisory Group to develop a program strategy, determine budget and staffing requirements, secure funding, and implement a multiyear portfolio of activities that advance the CEES mission, ensuring that CEES and the OEC meet their stated objectives.

Preferred qualifications: PhD in engineering, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, or public policy with extensive knowledge of scholarship in engineering and science ethics, history of technology, engineering and science education, and public policy. Extensive experience interacting with engineering and science educators, employers, professional societies, public and private sector funders, and policymakers, and strong knowledge of/experience with fundraising and strategic planning.

Minimum requirements: Master’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, or public policy or equivalent knowledge with 6 years of related professional experience, 2 of them in a supervisory capacity. Strong program/project development, management, and facilitation skills. Ability to independently develop and manage multiple complex projects, work successfully in a team environment, and form and maintain effective teams. Experience with proposal writing and fundraising. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and constituents. 4. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Scholar in Engineering Leadership Development

Engineering Leadership Development (ELD), a dynamic, growing program within the College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, invites applications from individuals with a cross-disciplinary background in social sciences, education, management, human resources or related fields with interests in leadership research, education and development as well as familiarity with engineering and/or technical environments. This Limited Term Post-doctoral research position will have an initial contract for one or two years with the possibility of renewal. The Engineering Leadership Development Program, housed within the College’s School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP), provides a challenging, relevant and dynamic world-class program that further engages engineering students in their education while preparing them for effective followership and leadership roles in a technical work environment. The post-doctoral researcher will be part of a team of ELD faculty that are working toward the following goals in support of ELD’s mission: To develop and implement engineering leadership assessments in order to evaluate ELD program effectiveness; To conduct research at the nexus of engineering leadership and education; To further develop curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular programming for leadership education for undergraduate and graduate students in engineering; To provide engineering leadership training to College of Engineering undergraduate and graduate students. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in social sciences, education, management, human resources or related fields with interests in leadership research, education and development. The successful candidate will work with the ELD faculty to contribute to current research and establish new research agendas for the ELD program; contribute to grant proposal preparation; design research studies; collect and analyze both qualitative (focus groups, one-on-one interviews) and quantitative (survey) data; publish research in the field of engineering leadership education; and teach a maximum of one engineering leadership course per semester. The ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others, within the College and the wider University as well as with collaborating universities on a multi-disciplinary research team is crucial. Demonstrated productivity in terms of published peer-reviewed journal articles and scientific conference presentations is required. Desired research skills and experiences include intensive interviewing, program implementation, survey design and administration, and data analysis. Proven experience in teaching upper-level undergraduate and/or graduate courses is highly desired. Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills (including spoken/written English) are required. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university and community is required. Experience with leadership in large research projects preferred. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of re-funding and contingent on satisfactory performance. The 2018 Collaboratory Summer Institute, Designing Student-Centered Learning Experiences, http://www.olin.edu/collaborate/collaboratory/summer-institute/, will be held June 4-8, 2018, at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts. The Olin Collaboratory Summer Institute is an intensive week-long immersion designed to provide participants from around the country and around the world with the opportunity to conceive and catalyze change in education.

Designing Student-Centered Learning Experiences is a weeklong interactive workshop for faculty teams engaged in a curricular change effort at their own institution. Through participatory workshops, immersive design exercises, and presentations from experts, teams of faculty learn about, experience, and practice effective, engaging teaching approaches for new and meaningful STEM curricula. Through the Summer Institute experience, we aim to create a learning environment for participants that

· Embraces creativity, prototyping, iterating, and dreaming big,

· Introduces a set of tools, concepts, and language about student-centered experience design,

· Promotes exploration of your context in a new way and provides insight into what we do here at Olin, and

· Builds community among educators, change agents, designers, and learners.

Alongside participants from other institutions, you and your team will develop concrete action plans for curricular change. Sessions are highly participatory and you will be challenged to continually consider new ideas and put novel approaches into practice. Institute attendees will acquire a new lens through which to view their projects, an expanded repertoire of techniques and solutions, and concrete steps to take their plans forward. Past attendees have included Deans, experienced and new faculty, staff, instructional designs, and faculty developers to name a few. All participants should be prepared to spend the full week deeply engaged in this demanding program. Applicants must apply in teams of at least three and describe a project (in the contemplation, planning, or execution stage) at their home institution.

Who Should Attend: The Institute is designed for faculty and administrators from a wide variety of institutions, including public, private, STEM, liberal arts, community colleges, research universities and K-12 programs, who are currently involved in a curricular change effort.
