ERM Announcements, February 15, 2023

Dear ERM members,

I didn’t note the start of Black History Month in our last newsletter, but I didn’t want to miss highlighting the opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Black scholars in our community. As a white person, this month is an opportunity to reflect on my role in addressing anti-Blackness in our U.S. context, and not just for one month but throughout the year. I’d love to hear what others are doing to learn, grow, or amply efforts for justice. We had a significant emphasis on efforts related to the ASEE Year of Impact on Racial Equity last year, including sponsored sessions with the Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. That work has not stopped just because we have moved into the next year. Look for a follow-up to the ERM Director’s Special Session from last year in our upcoming program.

In this newsletter, there are a number of announcements for opportunities to volunteer and get engaged with research studies and efforts within the community. There are also a number of new positions open in engineering education research.

Hope things are going well for each of you!

All my best,

Allison

General Announcements

  1. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2023 Apprentice Faculty Grant Program Accepting Applications until February 28

The Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program within the Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) encourages and honors promising emerging engineering education scholars who have the potential for substantial contributions to the community.

In conjunction with the 2023 ASEE Annual Conference, the AFG program will grant up to four awards to emerging engineering education scholars, which may include: senior graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, staff members, or senior ranking faculty who meet the criteria of an emerging engineering education scholar (refer to the website below for details). Each award will include: 1) connection with a mentor who is a senior scholar in the engineering education community at the ASEE conference, and 2) support for conference travel expenses. AFG recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the annual ASEE conference, including conference sessions in the ERM division, the ERM Annual Community Celebration and Awards Reception (ticket included), and a meet-and-greet with the other AFG recipients and mentors. We also highly encourage AFG recipients to attend at least one workshop.

(Please note that given ASEE’s financial issues, the exact level of financial support is still under consideration. And, ERM is currently unable to make awards because all ASEE Division accounts are frozen. ERM is still committed to providing support for conference travel expenses for AFG winners and will provide more details when they become available.)

For more details, including how to apply, please refer to https://erm.asee.org/awards/afg/. If you have any questions please contact Ana Rynerson (Senior Chair) at amrynearson@campbell.edu or Aaron Johnson (Junior Chair) at aaronwj@umich.edu.

This workshop takes place in one 3-hour instructor-led session. Throughout the workshop, there will be multiple opportunities to ask questions, participate in breakout discussions, and share reflections with the facilitator and other participants.

How You Will Benefit

  • You will learn about opportunities and challenges of synchronous and asynchronous hybrid learning environments for collaborative work.
  • You will learn about a Structure-Climate (SC) approach.
  • You will use a Structure-Climate (SC) approach to practice designing hybrid teamwork experiences relevant to individual educational needs.
  • You will engage with a network of professionals outside of your university and discipline.

Intended Audience

This workshop is intended for educators, administrators, and staff for K-12, college, and university level institutions, as well as educational technology specialists, who want to better understand ways of effectively supporting hybrid learning environments.
