Dear ERM members,

I don’t know how it’s been going to everyone else, but for me, this semester has been ROUGH. I’m trying to find a new set of boundaries and balancing the ever-growing list of things on my to-do list. In all reality, nothing seems to get done on time, and I’m working on spreading out who I disappoint. As someone who is incredibly conscientious, learning these lessons has been really difficult.

With various ASEE deadlines, the last week, in particular, has been very hectic. I want to give a shout out to our ASEE 2022 Vice Chair, Dr. Stephanie Cutler, for all the amazing work she is doing behind the scenes to make our upcoming conference and the process of reviewing possible. And, I want to thank everyone that has volunteered to review.

I also wanted to announce an update to the way I will be collecting ERM announcements. In addition to just being overwhelmed, my inbox has seemed more chaotic than usual. I have missed or lost announcements in the flood of emails, and for that, I do apologize. So, I am asking anyone that wants to send an announcement to use a Google form (bit.ly/3v87pDR). I will guarantee that anything submitted 48 hours before the first and fifteenth of each month will be in the next announcement, and I will try to do my best to accommodate those that come in after that deadline. More details on the form and submission process are at the end of this email. Thanks for trying a new system with me as we all muddle through together.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Special Collection on the Role of Emerging Technologies in AEC Education

Aims & Scope:
While the COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed our daily lives, it has also expedited the pace of technology development and integration in many fields including the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries. Moving into the post-pandemic era, it is critical to understand the role of emerging technologies in shaping the learning environment for AEC education. Anecdotal evidence in AEC education already exists with respect to pedagogical improvements made by individual technologies such as immersive computing, ubiquitous sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, big data, cyberinfrastructure, and photogrammetry. However, the human-technology frontier in AEC workplaces is destined to change fundamentally in the coming years. This Special Collection aims to advance knowledge in the application of emerging technologies in AEC education, by encouraging contributions to new concepts, methodologies, and best practices, as well as experiments and case studies for current and future integration of technologies in AEC education. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
The role of emerging technologies in minimizing the gaps between AEC curricula and industry practices,
The use of emerging technologies (e.g., sensing, analytics, visualization, information technology, modeling, simulation) to form disruptive forces to improve the learning environment,
Pedagogical strategies enabled by emerging technologies to enhance multidisciplinary teamwork and communication skills in AEC education,
Challenges related to digital inequity in AEC education and the use of technologies to address them, and
Visionary approaches and methods for future AEC work and education.

Venues: Submissions will go through a rigorous peer-review process. Accepted papers will be published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) either in the Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering (JCCE) or the Journal of Civil Engineering Education (JCEE), based on the topic and scope of the article. Type of Papers: We accept two types of articles: Technical Papers and Case Studies. Technical Papers should report results of thought- provoking studies that contribute to the planning, analysis, design, construction, management, or maintenance of civil engineering works (JCCE) or describe educational research efforts related to civil engineering and include traditional research, case study research, educational intervention papers, and systematic literature reviews that seek to expand the field of knowledge (JCEE). Case Studies describe a method or application that illustrates a new or existing principle or present an innovative way to solve a problem (JCCE) or describes newly established or innovative educational practices or tools that are based upon Evidence-Based Instructional Practices from the engineering education and education literature, with the focus of sharing the work as an example for others to adopt and/or test for themselves (JCEE). CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Review Apprentice Faculty Grant Applications

We are seeking volunteers to review applications for this year’s ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) program. The commitment requires reviewing 3 application packages, which will take approximately 30 minutes each. You will be provided specific review criteria and your responses will be collected online. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2022 Apprentice Faculty Grant Program Accepting Applications until February 21st

The Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program within the Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) encourages and honors promising emerging engineering education scholars who have the potential for substantial contributions to the community.

In conjunction with the 2021 ASEE Annual Conference, the AFG program will grant up to four awards to emerging engineering education scholars, which may include: senior graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, staff members, or senior ranking faculty who meet the criteria of an emerging engineering education scholar (refer to website below for details). Each award will include: 1) connection with a mentor who is a senior scholar in the engineering education community at the ASEE conference 2) support for conference travel expenses (exact level of financial support is still under consideration, but will not exceed $500). AFG recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the annual ASEE conference, including conference sessions in the ERM division, the ERM Annual Community Celebration and Awards Reception (ticket included), and a meet-and-greet with the other AFG recipients and mentors. We also highly encourage AFG recipients to attend at least one workshop.

CALL FOR APPLICANTS: Engineering Education Research (EER) May Summer School in Europe

An EER Summer School, organized by the KU Leuven University and SEFI (the European Society for Engineering Education), will be held 2-6 May 2022 in Leuven, Belgium. The registration fee of €800 covers tuition, room (double occupancy) and board. This Summer School provides an opportunity for those new to EER — PhD students and people interested doing a PhD in engineering and science education research — to learn from experts and peers. Workshop topics include:
· What makes engineering education research so special?
· Quantitative Research Methods
· Qualitative Research Methods
· Mixed Methods
All sessions have a highly interactive format, facilitating exchange of ideas and opinions in general or in the context of the participants’ research and projects. Participants will prepare work before the summer school and engage in exercises each day to prepare for in-depth discussion of specific topics.

CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS: Mixed Methods Studies Involving Psychological Constructs or Processes

Have you conducted a mixed methods study about learning, motivation, identity, perceived belongingness, or some other psychological construct or process? Was there something unique in your design that you think is worth highlighting in a methodologically focused manuscript? If you answered yes to those two questions, please consider submitting a manuscript to the special issue of Methods in Psychology, co-edited by Elizabeth Creamer (Professor Emerita, Virginia Tech) and myself, David Reeping (Assistant Professor, University of Cincinnati). The open-access fee is waived for articles accepted to the special issue.

The special issue title is Advancing Methodological Boundaries by Innovation in the Pairing of Mixed Methods with Qualitative Methods (full description is linked here), so we are particularly interested in manuscripts with strong qualitative strands. Topics might include, but are not limited to:
strategies that paired mixed methods with one or more qualitative methods (e.g., grounded theory, case study, discourse analysis, etc.)
unconventional sources of data or data collection methods (e.g., social media, mapping)
reflexivity about an effective approach to collaboration and teamwork
adapting tables and figures (i.e., joint displays) to integrate qualitative and quantitative data during analysis, and
using qualitative software in creative ways.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: ERM Best Paper Award Committee

The ERM Best Paper Committee is looking for volunteers to help review papers for the Best Paper award. This process takes place after regular reviews are submitted, typically in the March to early April time frame. Committee members are asked to review several papers using a rubric and then discuss as a group to identify finalist papers, which are reviewed by the whole committee to determine the winner. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Iron Range Engineering Bell program, Tenure-Track Faculty Position

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Position UC San Diego – NSF AGEP Hiring Interventions for Representation and Equity (HIRE) Alliance

A postdoctoral position is available with Professor Stanley Lo in the Division of Biological Sciences at University of California San Diego as part of the Hiring Interventions for Representation and Equity (HIRE) Alliance project funded by the National Science Foundation (HRD-2113355). We are using design-based research to develop, implement, self-study, and evaluate a model to advance equitable hiring of teaching-focused faculty in STEM. Specifically, the position will collaborate with social science researchers, professional evaluators, and faculty fellows in the Alliance to examine how departmental and institutional factors may support or prevent the implementation of equitable faculty hiring practices.

What we offer
The HIRE Alliance is a stimulating intellectual environment with freedom to develop new research directions and collaborations with researchers across multiple UC campuses. At UC San Diego, we have a vibrant discipline-based education research community in STEM, a Science of Teaching seminar series in Biological Sciences, and a joint Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Science Education with San Diego State University. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Department Head of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Arizona is seeking nominations and applications for a department head with excellent leadership skills and enthusiasm for world class research, innovative teaching, and collaborations with industry, government, community, and clinical partners. The University of Arizona, a Research I, Land-grant, and Hispanic Serving institution, ranks in the top 4% of all US Institutions, with more than $734 million in annual research expenditures, according to data from the National Science Foundation. The annual research expenditures for the department exceed $3 million. The BME Department Head, who reports to the College of Engineering dean, should be a visionary who can lead a diverse group of faculty, staff and students; oversee modern educational research laboratories and facilities; and, most importantly, spearhead the continuing transformation of BME for the challenges of the 21st century.

Successful candidates are expected to have extensive research and teaching experience at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor. POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Lecturer in Engineering Fundamentals Program at the University of Tennessee

The Engineering Fundamentals Program (EFP) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks a dynamic and innovative Lecturer to contribute to its first-year engineering program. EFP is the home of the engage program, an integrated and team-taught first-year curriculum and is responsible for teaching nine credit hours of common coursework for each of the College’s first year students (1000 per year). Subject matters taught include:

Dear ERM members,

Happy February! Today marks the start of Black History Month. This month serves as a celebration of the significant contributions and lives of Black Americans, many of whom have gone unrecognized in the past. This blog features eight Black engineers, some of whom you may have learned about through recent popular culture features like the film Hidden Figures, and many of whom were never recognized in most of our engineering education experiences: https://www.becauseofthemwecan.com/blogs/culture/8-incredible-black-engineers-who-made-their-mark-on-history. This month is also a reminder that not only one month per year but also throughout the year, that Black stories are essential to understanding our history and the history of the United States including our faults, progress, aspirations and the role that each of us must play in addressing injustice and racism. I’m looking forward to learning more about the contributions of Black engineers this month.

I also want to take a chance to highlight the call for the ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) program. This program encourages and honors promising emerging engineering education scholars who have the potential for substantial contributions to the community through connection with a mentor and some travel support for the ASEE Annual Conference. I encourage new scholars in the field to apply and for more senior scholars to reach out to your networks to encourage applications as well as volunteer to review!

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Research Experience on the Internet of Things (IoT) for Undergraduates at the University of Central Florida

The Computer Science Department at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL) will hold an 8‐week, 2022 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) on the Internet of Things http://iotreu.cs.ucf.edu/. REU students will be trained in research‐based theory and applications of IoT technologies, which extends the connected nature of computing devices to objects of the physical world. The REU students will join well‐established research groups under the close supervision of faculty with expertise in various IoT research areas such as smart cities, smart healthcare, and smart grids. Many of the research topics will require the students to utilize state-of-the-art techniques of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analytics.

REU program dates: May 24, 2022 ‐ July 15, 2022

Application deadline: March 4, 2022

Eligibility requirements:
· Sophomore, junior or senior undergraduates
· Majors: computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering
· Must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents

CALL FOR JEE ASSOCIATE EDITORS

The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE), which serves to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education, is currently accepting applications for one or more volunteer Associate Editors. Associate Editors are an integral part of the JEE Editorial Board and ensure the quality and timeliness of published material. Associate Editors serve 3-year terms that may be renewed.

The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE), which serves to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education, is introducing a new position on the Editorial Board: Assistant Editor. This position was created to increase the diversity of voices contributing to the scholarship published in JEE and to provide opportunities for non-tenure-track and pre-tenure faculty in the editorial process.

Similar to an academic ranking of Assistant Professor, the Assistant Editor position is appropriate for early career scholars who want to gain experience in the editorial and review processes at JEE. The Engineering Education Research (EER) Peer Reviewer Training Program (PERT) aims to boost peer review skills and connect participants to the EER community. We have two opportunities for professional development this spring.

If you are new to proposal reviewing and writing, the PERT team is piloting a proposal reviewer training program. We presume that applicants have some level of experience with EER, but minimal experience in reviewing EER scholarship, prior to beginning the program

Participants will work on a team consisting of a mentor and mentees to peer review three proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation (NSF) but which are not currently under review. Participants will then serve on a mock panel, discussing six proposals (including the three reviewed with your team) and then writing a panel summary .

Aims & Scope:
While the COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed our daily lives, it has also expedited the pace of technology development and integration in many fields including the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries. Moving into the post-pandemic era, it is critical to understand the role of emerging technologies in shaping the learning environment for AEC education. Anecdotal evidence in AEC education already exists with respect to pedagogical improvements made by individual technologies such as immersive computing, ubiquitous sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, big data, cyberinfrastructure, and photogrammetry. However, the human-technology frontier in AEC workplaces is destined to change fundamentally in the coming years. This Special Collection aims to advance knowledge in the application of emerging technologies in AEC education, by encouraging contributions to new concepts, methodologies, and best practices, as well as experiments and case studies for current and future integration of technologies in AEC education. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
The role of emerging technologies in minimizing the gaps between AEC curricula and industry practices,
The use of emerging technologies (e.g., sensing, analytics, visualization, information technology, modeling, simulation) to form disruptive forces to improve the learning environment,
Pedagogical strategies enabled by emerging technologies to enhance multidisciplinary teamwork and communication skills in AEC education,
Challenges related to digital inequity in AEC education and the use of technologies to address them, and
Visionary approaches and methods for future AEC work and education.

Venues: Submissions will go through a rigorous peer-review process. Accepted papers will be published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) either in the Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering (JCCE) or the Journal of Civil Engineering Education (JCEE), based on the topic and scope of the article. Type of Papers: We accept two types of articles: Technical Papers and Case Studies. Technical Papers should report results of thought- provoking studies that contribute to the planning, analysis, design, construction, management, or maintenance of civil engineering works (JCCE) or describe educational research efforts related to civil engineering and include traditional research, case study research, educational intervention papers, and systematic literature reviews that seek to expand the field of knowledge (JCEE). Case Studies describe a method or application that illustrates a new or existing principle or present an innovative way to solve a problem (JCCE) or describes newly established or innovative educational practices or tools that are based upon Evidence-Based Instructional Practices from the engineering education and education literature, with the focus of sharing the work as an example for others to adopt and/or test for themselves (JCEE). CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2022 Apprentice Faculty Grant Program Accepting Applications until February 21st

The Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program within the Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) encourages and honors promising emerging engineering education scholars who have the potential for substantial contributions to the community.

In conjunction with the 2021 ASEE Annual Conference, the AFG program will grant up to four awards to emerging engineering education scholars, which may include: senior graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, staff members, or senior ranking faculty who meet the criteria of an emerging engineering education scholar (refer to website below for details). Each award will include: 1) connection with a mentor who is a senior scholar in the engineering education community at the ASEE conference 2) support for conference travel expenses (exact level of financial support is still under consideration, but will not exceed $500). AFG recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the annual ASEE conference, including conference sessions in the ERM division, the ERM Annual Community Celebration and Awards Reception (ticket included), and a meet-and-greet with the other AFG recipients and mentors. We also highly encourage AFG recipients to attend at least one workshop.
