ERM Nominations Now Open

Dear ASEE ERM members,

The Education Research and Methods Division Bylaws state that in even-numbered years, the membership shall elect two Directors and a secretary/treasurer. As such, the nominating committee is opening nominations April 20 – May 16, 2022. Below are descriptions of the positions open for nominations. All that is required are name, affiliation, and email submitted via email to Nathaniel Hunsu – nathaniel.hunsu@uga.edu during the nomination period. Elections are scheduled to be held May 20 – June 1, 2022. Both nominations and self-nominations are welcome.

Directors
Directors shall be elected to serve a two-year term and shall not be eligible to serve a second successive term. Two directors shall be elected each year. Directors may be asked to serve in a capacity as determined by the Chair.

Secretary/Treasurer
The Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected in even-numbered years to serve a two-year term. The Secretary-Treasurer shall be responsible for the minutes of the meetings of the Executive Board, Executive Committee and the annual business meeting of the Division and shall maintain the financial accounts and records of the Division in coordination with the Society Headquarters staff. The Secretary-Treasurer shall make a written financial report at each meeting of the Executive Board and at the annual business meeting of the Division. The Secretary-Treasurer shall be responsible for preparing Division financial and activity reports as may be required by ASEE.

Dear ERM members,

I hope you are doing well! It finally feels like Spring is truly here; I have daffodils popping up in my yard, and I’m looking forward to nicer weather and a break ahead.

I do want to highlight the 2022 PEER Collaborative National Workshop and Unconference announcement below. I attended and even helped plan this event when I was an early career faculty member and got a lot out of the peer mentoring and support through this network. I’d encourage folks to get connected with this group. Registration is free and involves a dinner and unconference immediately after the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition.

I’ve got a sick kiddo at home, so this is a brief note just to say hello!

Uncertainty about job opportunities within the engineering education field, what resources can help with the job application process, and how to select the best job for you can only add to the stress.

The STEER workshop is designed to help address these issues by providing an interactive session that will address job searching for those interested in engineering education research positions within Academia. These positions include research focused, teaching focused, and staff focused roles. Come out and learn about what types of job opportunities have been available for the last 5 academic year cycles, how faculty have been able to “craft” their own positions, and tips/tricks for navigating your way through the job application and decision making process.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Engineering Faculty Supporting Undergraduate Mental Health

We are working to enhance our understanding of how undergraduate engineering students experience stress. Our project is focused on gaining a better understanding of how a culture of stress develops and is perpetuated in engineering programs. We will use this knowledge to develop resources and communities that can dismantle this culture and promote student wellbeing. Specifically, we are seeking information on how engineering faculty and staff perceive undergraduate engineering culture, particularly with regard to norms around stress and mental health.

We are seeking engineering faculty and staff who work with undergraduate engineering students. Participants will complete a 30–60-minute virtual interview via Zoom sharing experiences working with undergraduate engineering students. The interview will be used to improve student support systems and faculty training. Upon completion, participants will receive a $50 Amazon gift card.

The 2022 PEER Collaborative Unconference is scheduled to be back in person with the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition in Minneapolis, MN, on Wednesday, June 29 (dinner) and Thursday, June 30 (unconference). This free event, uses informal “sessions” to address topics agreed on by participants. Examples of past “sessions” include mentoring graduate students, applying for external funding, building collaborations, and other topics. Specific locations and times are still TBD. Want to help improve engineering mechanics instruction? Look no further!

We’re currently recruiting participants to complete a brief survey on statics problem solving approaches that will be used to ultimately improve statics instruction. The survey itself should take around 10 to 15 minutes.

This study, funded by NSF grant numbers 1927149 and 1927250 is being conducted by Dr. Elif Miskioğlu, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Bucknell University, Dr. Kaela Martin, Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, and Dr. Adam Carberry, Associate Professor in the Ira A. Fulton Polytechnic Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

Participation is entirely voluntary, involves minimal risk, and has no direct benefit to you. Results will be used to develop modifications for engineering education curriculum focused on producing better-prepared professional engineers.

Are you looking to find a mentor or mentee for an engineering education research project? Do you want to expand your engineering education network? Are you interested in working on an NSF PFE: RIEF grant? If so, we are excited to invite you to an event at ASEE 2022, Catalyzing Collaborations: Networking to build teams for NSF RIEF grants. This free event is designed to help you connect with other motivated engineering education researchers. We are looking for both mentors and mentees to attend in order to help find potential pairs or groups for the NSF: PFE RIEF grant. Experience in the field is not required to attend the event, as the goal is to help connect motivated and innovative individuals with one another in the engineering education community. Lunch will be provided at the event. This event will be held on Sunday, June 26 from 1:15 to 3 PM (Central Time).

This event is supported by the NSF for the purpose of exploring how engineering education researchers mentor engineering faculty on funded projects. Towards this goal, we aim to build a community for the NSF: PFE RIEF program and develop a networking opportunity for engineering faculty to find engineering education research mentors.

Mentees who are interested in attending the event should fill out this application form to be considered. Space is limited, and applications are due by Saturday, April 30, 2022. Limited funds for mentee stipends for pilot projects and other costs are available.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Activities pursued by early-career faculty should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from early-career faculty at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Wake Forest University – Leadership and Character Visiting Scholar in the Department of Engineering

The Department of Engineering and Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University seek an experienced Visiting Scholar to support leadership and character learning activities and scholarly efforts in Engineering. The Visiting Scholar position is a staff position with service, research, and teaching responsibilities. The Visiting Scholar will be expected to support the Engineering faculty with leadership and character expertise; host faculty development workshops to support the role of character and virtues in engineering; produce scholarship for public and scholarly audiences on character-based leadership, professionalism, and/or professional identity formation in engineering; and contribute to the development, assessment, and support the dissemination of character-related modules embedded across the engineering curriculum. Commensurate with their qualifications and expertise, the Visiting Scholar will teach or co-teach core and elective engineering courses, including supporting the senior capstone design experience. The Visiting Scholar will also advise the Chair of the Department on integrating character-development learning opportunities throughout the student experience and aligning existing character development efforts. The Visiting Scholar will build relationships among faculty, staff, and students and join the Engineering Chair and other engineering faculty in facilitating industry partnerships that can support community engaged projects that develop the leadership and character of engineering students. Collaborating with the Engineering Chair, other Engineering faculty, and the Program for Leadership and Character, and leveraging an existing departmental award by the Kern Family Foundation’s Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN), the Visiting Scholar will work with faculty and staff to build a departmental culture focused on leadership and character.

This is a three-year, grant-funded position supported by a multi-year grant from the Kern Family Foundation. Wake Forest University is a private, coeducational institution dedicated to academic excellence in liberal arts, graduate, and professional education. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Director of Assessment and Instructional Support, Leonhard Center, Penn State

The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) seeks a creative individual to serve in the position of Director of Assessment and Instructional Support (AIS) in the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education. The Leonhard Center has been a critical source of educational innovation, assessment, and education-related faculty development in the College of Engineering at Penn State for more than 30 years. The Director of Assessment and Instructional Support will provide leadership across the College of Engineering for initiatives relating to teaching and learning by working with faculty members and departments. In addition, the individual will provide leadership for both funded and unfunded educational-related projects.

The ideal applicant will possess a PhD in engineering education, educational psychology, higher education, or a related field. In addition, the ideal candidate will have at least 3-5 years of experience with teaching faculty development, preferably in STEM fields. Additional qualifications include strong knowledge of the disciplinary trends in engineering education, knowledge of faculty development including holistic faculty development, and strong research and assessment skills. Knowledge of research and topics relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion as they apply to faculty development are highly desirable.

The Integrated Design Engineering (IDEN) program at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for full-time instructors to teach undergraduate courses. The Department of Engineering Education, in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at University at Buffalo (UB), SUNY and Explore Interactive (EI), a start-up focusing on innovative educational technologies for engineering education, invite candidates to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Fellowship. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Position in Equity-Centered Engineering Education at University of Michigan

A team of faculty and staff in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan are researching and developing original case study materials that promote equity-centered engineering learning outcomes for undergraduates in the College of Engineering (refer to interview with the CoE Dean about equity-centered engineering here). This project includes finding suitable case studies, developing case study instructional materials, researching approaches for integration of materials, supporting instructors in implementation of materials into courses, and investigating student conceptions and reactions to case study materials.

The faculty leadership team, which includes Dr. James Holly, Jr., Dr. Shanna Daly, and Dr. Steve Skerlos, seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to contribute to this initiative. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to:

Literature synthesis of multiple-pathway curriculum approaches
Curriculum development of equity-centered engineering cases studies
Development of implementation strategy and supporting instructional materials
Development of data collection instruments
Submission of research protocols for ethics review
Data collection through interviews, focus groups, and observations with students and instructors
Analysis and dissemination of data for publication and refinement of curricular approaches

Required Qualifications: Candidates should have a PhD in education, engineering education, or a related field. Qualified candidates will have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), strong qualitative research skills, and experience working in equity-focused teaching or research. Candidates should have excellent organizational and time-management skills and strong interpersonal skills, including the capacity to offer thoughtful and clear guidance on research and curriculum projects. The applicant will be expected to work independently, provide leadership to an interdisciplinary team, and work towards completing case study iteration cycles based on findings developed during the project.

Expected start date: Between June 1 and September 1, 2022

Appointment Type: Term (12 months) with a possible renewal

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Engineering Education Employment Opportunity at UTA

The Engineering Conocimiento research group at the University of Texas at San Antonio, led by Dr. Alex Mejia, is seeking applicants for a one-year postdoctoral research associate position to work on the National Science Foundation CAREER grant: “Breaking the Tradition of Silence through Conocimiento and Consciousness Raising among Latinx Engineers.” The postdoctoral research associate will join Dr. Mejia’s research team to generate knowledge on how Latino/a/x engineers make meaning of their experiences and adversity throughout their engineering pathways, and how these meanings may provide a

heightened sense of agency to persevere as they acknowledge themselves as holders and creators of knowledge. This study follows an anthropological approach to (re)define the Latino/a/x engineer consciousness and uncover the multiple intersectional identities that dispel the myth of the Latinx Monolith. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct and analyze interviews, focus groups, and observational work to interpret collected data and produce project reports
Develop workshop materials and events related to the project
Conduct research on institutional documentation as needed for the project
Contribute to the writing of peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles consistent with the grant
Represent the research team at conferences and events
Provide leadership on innovative opportunities related to the grant (e.g., work with undergraduate students, interpreting policies, dissemination of the work, etc.)
Assisting in instruction if appropriate
Collaborate with other team members to develop synergistic opportunities

Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. in any engineering or closely related discipline (e.g., Science and Technology Studies, STEM Education) with demonstrated experience in engineering education contexts. The candidates will also have demonstrated experience in qualitative research.

Bilingual: English/Spanish
Experience in collaborative, multi-investigator research environments
Experience with curriculum development and workshop facilitation

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in Engineering Education at Virginia Tech

The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to take on a leadership role within the S-STEM Organizational Partnerships Research Hub. This new research hub funded by the National Science Foundation and based at Virginia Tech will focus on inter- and intra-institutional partnerships that systematically support low-income engineering students. The Postdoctoral Associate will work closely with the VT Hub leadership team (Drs. David Knight, Walter Lee, Jake Grohs, Sarah Rodriguez, and Bev Watford) on overall hub coordination, will help spearhead much of the new data collection and integration around organizational partnerships that support low-income engineering students, and will engage in all analysis and dissemination activities. The Hub’s integrated core activities, each designed to engage the full institutional diversity of NSF’s S-STEM programs with a core element focused on low-income engineering students, will include the following: 1) organizational partnerships community of practice building, with activities including research accelerator grants and summer research institutes, 2) cross-S-STEM program data collection and integration, and 3) broad dissemination of easy-to-access products (e.g., research, policy, and practice briefs) as well as traditional scholarly output (e.g., journal articles). The overall mission of the research endeavor is to advance the understanding of, and create new knowledge applicable to, the following areas within engineering education: Epistemologies, Learning Mechanisms, Learning Systems and Diversity and Inclusiveness, and Assessment.
