Dear ERM members,

 

Happy Wednesday! I cannot believe that it has already been two weeks since the last time I sent out the newsletter. This newsletter is packed full of opportunities, particularly for potential graduate students and those looking for positions.

 

It’s really starting to feel like fall in Indiana. No spectacular leaf color yet, but the intense humidity and heat of summer are starting to subside. And, college football has started! I really enjoy tailgating and watching the games. I do pull for Purdue, but my main team is my alma mater, Clemson. The first game was disappointing, but Georgia is a formidable team.

 

As a part of my sabbatical, I’ve been spending some time down at IU Bloomington with some collaborators. I don’t have an office, so I’ve been spending a lot of time outdoors and moving from place to place on campus. With the pleasant weather, the change of pace and scenery has been a welcome change from being at my desk for long periods of time. I think I might have to build in time to switch work locations in my schedule in the future. I hope you’re getting some time to stop and appreciate the changing seasons.

You are invited to attend our two-day graduate program Open House on Thursday, October 21 (all day) and Friday, October 22, 2021 (morning).You will have opportunities to learn about our groundbreaking graduate programs, meet our faculty and students, attend our weekly research seminar, and learn about our research facilities. This event brings together individuals from a variety of backgrounds: current undergraduate and masters students from many disciplines, practicing STEM educators, and professional engineers ready for a career pivot, to name a few.

 

We will have an online/distance event this year, and possibly a face-to-face option depending on demand and local conditions.   1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: NSF Professional Formation of Engineers Program

 

The NSF Engineering (ENG) Directorate has launched a multi-year initiative, the Professional Formation of Engineers, to create and support an innovative and inclusive engineering profession for the 21st Century. The PFE: Research Initiation in Engineering Formation (PFE: RIEF) program has two goals: 1) Support research in the Professional Formation of Engineers (PFE), and 2) Increase the community of researchers conducting PFE research. PIs are expected to have little or no experience conducting social science or education research. The full proposal deadline date is November 9, 2021 (Second Tuesday in November, Annually Thereafter).

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Civil Engineering Tenure Track Assistant and/or Associate Professor, University of Portland

 

The Civil Engineering (CE) Program at the University of Portland (UP) seeks a tenure-track assistant and/or associate professor to join a thriving academic community teacher-scholars in August 2022. We encourage applicants with expertise in structural, transportation, geotechnical, or construction engineering, preferably with knowledge in sustainable practices.  Rank of the appointment will be commensurate with qualifications.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: The Lillian Gilbreth Postdoctoral Fellowship at Purdue University College of Engineering

 

The goal of the Lillian Gilbreth Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Purdue Engineering is to attract and prepare outstanding individuals with recently awarded PhDs for a career in engineering academia through interdisciplinary research, training, and professional development.

The UNC Charlotte Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) invites applications for a non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor to teach undergraduate computer engineering courses and labs. Typical courses include computer programming in C++, digital logic, computer organization, and embedded systems.  Applicants must be able to actively contribute to undergraduate curriculum development activities and advising.

 

A PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree is desired; a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering with a minimum of five years’ experience may be considered.

The Pennsylvania State University seeks an accomplished, creative leader to serve in the position of Assistant Dean for Teaching & Learning in the College of Engineering. The Assistant Dean will also serve as the Director of the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Professor of Engineering Education, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

 

The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (http://engineering.unl.edu) will be seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in the area of engineering education. The College is building a cohort of discipline-based education research (DBER) faculty (http://engineering.unl.edu/DBER) to both establish national leadership in DBER in conjunction with the broader UNL DBER community and contribute to research-based transformations within their engineering academic units. CoE is particularly interested in those whose research primarily centers on engineering discipline-based teaching, learning, and assessment at the undergraduate level and who can extend their disciplinary-focused engineering education research to the K-12 and graduate levels.

 

The primary faculty appointment will be in one of two academic units in the College of Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering or Mechanical & Materials Engineering, depending on a candidate’s qualifications. Candidates will be expected to contribute to the academic programs in their CoE unit through teaching undergraduate courses as well as teaching graduate-level engineering education courses and supervising graduate research within the newly approved Unified PhD in Engineering – Specialization in Engineering Education Research program. ERM Announcements, September 1, 2021

Dear ERM members,

Happy September! Just a short note this week. A plague of several different non-COVID viruses went around day care this past week, so most of my time was spent coloring and watching Frozen, Frozen II, and more Frozen. But, this change of pace was not the disaster it would have been for me a year and a half ago.

One metaphor that’s been particularly useful to me is thinking about margins. Pre-pandemic, I tried to squeeze as much into my day as possible. I had a work schedule with little, if any margins. Part of that scheduling was to create space at home without work, but this practice often resulted high amounts of stress. One of the best things I did during the pandemic was scheduling time to each lunch and do something non-work related for 30-45 minutes. I found that coming back to work was more pleasant and successful. Since then, I’ve been scheduling margins into my work to create space for re-grouping, thinking, and slowing down. I hope your terms are off to a good start and there are some version of your own margins in your plans.

Candidates are sought who have an MS or PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field or equivalent industry experience. Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment. Preference will be given to applicants with prior university teaching experience, years of experience, and graduate degrees.

Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Candidates are expected to fit into curriculum groups focused on a) structures, materials, and structural dynamics or b) aerospace design and system engineering. These areas include courses related to statics and structural analysis, experimental and computational methods, material science for aerospace engineers, aerospace vehicle design and performance, and mechanics of materials. Engineering design or operational experience in one or both of these areas is ideal. An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required. A successful candidate in this position will teach multiple courses during the academic year and summer terms. This instructor position typically has effort allocations of 80% teaching and 20% service, however these allocations are negotiable for a highly qualified applicant. Research is typically not included in this position, unless related to engineering education.

The Civil Engineering (CE) Program at the University of Portland (UP) seeks a tenure-track assistant and/or associate professor to join a thriving academic community teacher-scholars in August 2022.
