- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Recruiting Graduate Students to Develop Sociotechnical Modules for the Introduction to Circuits Course
Were you bored and uninspired with the purely technical nature of your Introduction to Circuits course? Are you a graduate student interested in bringing sociotechnical issues into electrical engineering? Do you see yourself teaching circuits in the future but wanting your course to be “different”? Do you have creative ideas for connecting circuits to real world social issues? If so, please consider applying for our Sociotechnical Electrical Engineering Stars (SEES) Cohort of graduate students to learn about and design sociotechnical modules for circuits.
We (Drs. Susan Lord at the University of San Diego and Cindy Finelli at the University of Michigan) were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to (1) create a series of sociotechnical modules for the Introduction to Circuits course, (2) prepare detailed teaching guides for each module to make it easy for instructors to integrate them into their courses, and (3) assess the impact of the modules on students’ sociotechnical knowledge and sense of social responsibility. To date, we have developed and piloted one module about conflict minerals tied to capacitors and another aboutrepurposing electric vehicle batteries tied to the voltage divider.
We are currently recruiting a diverse group of at least four engineering graduate students, each having a strong connection to electrical engineering, who will join our SEES Cohort to create and test additional sociotechnical modules during Summer 2024. Each member of the SEES Cohort will receive a $2400 stipend for their participation.
The SEES Cohort will begin their work with a two-day, all-expenses-paid, in-person SEES Summit on May 23-24, 2024 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. During the summit, students will discuss the rationale behind addressing social and technical material in circuits, learn about effective course design, and brainstorm topics for sociotechnical modules. Then, over the following three months, members of the SEES Cohort will devote approximately eight hours each week, through a combination of individual and collaborative work, as they develop and refine sociotechnical modules. Finally, during the week of August 19, 2024, we will hold a one-day virtual SEES Showcase (date to be determined) for the cohort to share and discuss the developed modules.
Following the SEES Showcase, members of the cohort may continue to engage in this project in multiple ways. For instance, they could present their work at the ASEE 2025 Annual Conference (we have additional funding to support conference travel for interested members of the cohort) or they could assist with launching the modules and helping faculty learn how to implement them.

We aim to recruit a diverse group of participants with a strong connection to electrical engineering who are interested in the goals of our project and available to engage throughout Summer 2024. - CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Black Masculinities in Engineering Dissertation Study
My name is Josh Wallace and I’m a PhD Candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am currently recruiting Black men enrolled in graduate engineering programs in the United States for my dissertation study on Black masculinities in the engineering discipline and would love it if you could participate!
To give some insight, this study seeks to examine how Black men in engineering graduate programs exert agency against dominant practices of masculinity in the engineering discipline. Participation in this study includes two virtual one-on-one interviews each lasting approximately 60 minutes, one virtual focus group, and one journaling exercise, to be conducted simultaneously with the focus group and will last approximately 60 minutes. Participants will receive $10 per interview and focus group completed.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Clinical Assistant Professor of Workforce Education (Engineering Teacher Education) at UGA
The Department of Workforce Education and Instructional Technology at the University of Georgia invites applications for a position as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Workforce Education to begin August 2024. The position is a non-tenure-track, academic year appointment with the possibility of summer employment. This position is related to our new undergraduate teacher education degree in Workforce Education with a concentration in Engineering and Technology Education. As noted in the position summary, the new faculty will help to coordinate the new degree, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and work with stakeholders in the state to market and recruit the program.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Engineering Education Internship Position at NREL
We have a summer position for a graduate student intern in STEM at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. The graduate student intern will work with our scientific staff on the project “Understanding and evaluating graduate student pathways into sustainability-focused computational science research”. The project focuses on understanding how internships in advanced computing at NREL contribute to students’ careers and to diversifying the computational science work force. The graduate student intern’s finding will be reported to NREL management. We also expect to submit our findings to the peer-reviewed engineering education literature.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in Engineering Education at University at Buffalo
The Department of Engineering Education (DEE), in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join Dr. Courtney Faber’s research group: ENLITE – Exploring Knowledge, Learning, and Identity to Transform Engineering Education. The initial appointment is for one year with possibility for an additional year of renewal. The ENLITE research group is passionate about exploring how fundamental beliefs about knowledge and knowing create barriers to learning and collaborations. The ENLITE research group is currently conducting work in two areas: (1) Developing educational experiences that consider epistemic thinking and (2) Empowering engineering educations scholars to impact change in engineering.
This position will be mentored by Dr. Courtney Faber and supported by local engineering education communities in the Department of Engineering Education at University at Buffalo (UB). There will also be opportunities to participate in professional development held by SEAS and UB.
This Postdoctoral Associate position is a full-time appointment in which you will conduct research with Dr. Faber, participate in professional development activities, and have the opportunity to design your own study. Additional responsibilities include:
– Collaborate on the development of new research studies and participate in preliminary data collection and analysis
– Co-author journal publications and/or research proposals
– Assist in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the research group

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Founding Faculty and Program Director Positions at a New Work-Based Learning Software Engineering Program
These tenure-track positions are for two founding faculty members, including one program director, to launch and support our department’s new undergraduate work-based software engineering (SE) program, in the College of Science, Engineering, & Technology at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU), located in the. The upper division SE program includes a one-semester residential “Academy” that takes place in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Students then move on to four semesters of working at paid co-op position in industry combined with virtual/distance study with our faculty.
Candidates with at least five years’ professional experience working as a software engineer, or in a closely related job position are encouraged to apply. Iron Range Engineering (IRE) at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) in the Department of Integrated Engineering is hiring up to three tenure-track faculty (Assistant /Associate Professor or Professor). IRE is a practice-based upper division engineering program located in Virginia, MN. At IRE, students who have typically finished their lower division coursework at a community college earn their degrees by completing one intensive project semester followed by two years of co-op and learning experiences. - POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Tenured Associate Dean Sustainability in the new Sustainable Systems Engineering Program, University of Calgary
The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, Sustainability Engineering. This is a key leadership position within the Schulich School of Engineering (SSE). The Associate Dean appointment is a five-year term, renewable subject to review. The successful candidate will be offered a tenured academic appointment at the Professor level.
This position is a unique role, because our SUSE (sustainably systems engineering) program is a brand new program with the first students having started in September 2023. The faculty member is expected to advance the department by providing excellent instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
