CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Engineering Education at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida

The University of Florida Departments of Chemical Engineering and Engineering Education will host a ten-week paid summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), focusing on engineering education research from May 28 to August 5, 2022. Undergraduate students (in either 4-year or 2-year schools) in a science, technology (including engineering technology), engineering, or mathematics (STEM) disciplines are welcome to apply to this opportunity working directly with Dr. Rivera-Jiménez on research being conducted regarding the influence of national professional societies (i.e., AIChE, ASEE) in facilitating faculty agency toward changes in the curriculum and teaching practices regarding the social implications of the engineering profession (e.g., social justice, inclusive teaching) .

Participants will perform research on campus and will receive a $6,000 stipend per student in addition to housing, meal allowance, and travel support. The selected student will interact with a large cohort of other REU participants in an REU site that is carefully designed to offer opportunities to engage in professional development activities covering topics preparing students for success in undergraduate and graduate research, including laboratory safety, responsible conduct of research, record keeping, literature review, innovation, and entrepreneurship, creating a personal brand, and communicating research. Also, the REU participant will participate in professional and cultural activities organized through the Summer Undergraduate Research at Florida (SURF) program (https://www.eng.ufl.edu/surf/).

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Archival Publication Authors Workshop for Engineering Educators (APA-ENG)

The Archival Publication Authors Workshop for Engineering Educators (APA-ENG) aims to increase the capacity of engineering faculty to produce competitive manuscripts for refereed journals and other publications in the area of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

Faculty are invited to register for a free three-day virtual Networking, Ideation, and Collaboration Workshop (NIC) to match with other authors, find collaborators, and collectively develop collaboration competencies. The NIC will take place on April 20 – 22, 2022, from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM, ET all days. Seats are limited!

EVENT ANNOUNCMENT: Building Capacity in STEM Education Research Program (BCSER) Webinars and Office Hours
The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Education and Human Resources is hosting a general webinar and a series of office hours for the Building Capacity in STEM Education Research Program (BCSER), in support of NSF Program Solicitation 22-548. The webinar and office hours are a chance to learn about the program and to ask any questions you may have about the program. Sessions begin Monday, February 14th and run through March 23rd. About the Program

ECR’s Building Capacity in STEM Education Research (ECR: BCSER) supports projects that build investigators’ capacity to carry out high-quality STEM education research that will enhance the nation’s STEM education enterprise. In addition, ECR: BCSER seeks to broaden the pool of researchers who can advance knowledge regarding STEM learning and learning environments, broadening participation in STEM fields, and STEM workforce development. Researchers of races and ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities who are currently underrepresented in their participation in STEM education research and the STEM workforce, as well as faculty at minority-serving and two-year institutions, are particularly encouraged to submit proposals.

Specifically, ECR: BCSER supports activities that enable researchers to expand their areas of expertise and acquire the requisite knowledge and skills to conduct rigorous research in STEM education. Career development may be accomplished through investigator-initiated professional development and research projects or through institutes that enable researchers to integrate methodological strategies with theoretical and practical issues in STEM education.

About the Office Hours

Each office hour session is two hours in duration. Participants are welcome to drop in to ask specific questions and go or stay for the entire session.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: NETI workshops this Summer

The National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI) has been offering courses since 1991, reaching more than 2800 participants from over 365 different institutions. We are particularly thankful that we have been able to continue to offer these valuable workshops online to accommodate both safety concerns and travel restrictions. All NETI Workshops are conducted by Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland and Michael Prince. Workshops are highly interactive and provide opportunities for the participants to plan applications of the content to their own courses. We will be offering the following workshops this June:

NETI-3 Teaching in an Online Environment, will be offered June 7-8, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm ET each day using Zoom. This workshop for instructors teaching engineering or other STEM classes focuses on effective teaching in a virtual environment. Topics explored in the workshop include student motivation, active engagement, assessment and adopting an inclusive mindset in online environments. NETI-3 is highly interactive and provides opportunities for participants to plan applications of the workshop content to their own courses. Additional information can be found here.

NETI-2A (Forming, Managing & Assessing Student Teams) will be offered June 13-14, 2022, 1:00-5:00 pm ET each day using Zoom. This workshop develops participants’ ability to manage student teams – particularly in the context of team-based learning strategies. Teamwork can be taught, but students require guidance, practice, and feedback. They also need to be held accountable for their behavior. Research shows that there are effective practices for how to form teams, manage teams, and assess teams to improve student outcomes while maintaining an inclusive and welcoming learning environment. NETI-2A participants do not need to have attended NETI-1. Additional information can be found here.

NETI-2B (Advanced Student Engagement) will be offered June 16-17, 2022, 1:00 – 5:00 pm ET each day using Zoom. Inquiry based teaching is designed to help students to think deeply and equip them to solve technical problems in a social context. Research shows that inquiry-based instruction enhances motivation, improves conceptual understanding and develops life-long learning skills. NETI-2B will prepare participants to implement inquiry-based methods. Participants do not need to have attended NETI-1. Additional information can be found here.

While these workshops are offered online, the focus of NETI-2A and NETI-2B will address both face-to-face and online classes. The registration fee for each workshop is $400 per participant ($800 for both NETI-2A and NETI-2B), and includes an electronic version of presentation materials and other resources. We invite you to register for any of the workshops and to pass this notice along to faculty who would benefit from this program.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: 2022 ASEE Excellence Through Diversity Student Showcase

The ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition to be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis, MN, will host a student showcase poster session featuring projects from students at the high school, associates, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels on Wednesday, June 29, 1:00 – 4:00 PM.

The ASEE Student Showcase is an opportunity:

for students at all levels to share their creative engineering projects (including capstone design, mini-Baha, solar racers, intro
to design projects, makerspace projects, extracurricular projects, and others)
for mentors to help foster the professional networks of their students
for employers to meet young innovators

But most importantly, the ASEE Student Showcase is an opportunity:

for students to meet one another and establish the kinds of professional and scholarly relationships that will carry them forward and affect the long-term future of engineering.

All students under the age of 18 must have a chaperone to attend. Students are encouraged to bring physical artifacts and devices if they have them. Ample room will be given in the Exhibit Hall for each student presenter.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Iron Range Engineering Bell program, Tenure-Track Faculty Position

The Department of Integrated Engineering at Minnesota State University, Mankato invites applicants to a tenure-track faculty position. The department is home to Iron Range Engineering & Twin Cities Engineering, winners of the 2017 ABET Innovation Award, and our new IRE Bell program, which is a co-op based program. This position is with the Iron Range Engineering Bell program in Virginia, MN. Faculty require a PhD, including in engineering education, with disciplinary background to cover technical areas in the program. This position is focused on electrical engineering and related areas. POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Buffalo in the EPT Lab

The Department of Engineering Education (DEE) in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Buffalo invites candidates to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. The successful candidate will join the Engineering Problem Typology Lab (EPTL), focusing on research related to evidence-based pedagogy in supporting the professional formation of engineers. Work will span two areas of active research. The first area is reflected in the core idea of engineering problem typology (EPT) – the idea that engineers engage different types of problems in practice and that educational settings should provide experience with those different types of problems. The candidate will support research on the development and use of EPT as a framework to support design, facilitation, and reflection in problem-based learning environments. The second area considers the role of co-curriculars in the professional formation of engineers. Of particular interest is the apparent divergence between the value of co-curriculars as reflected in promotion by institutions, industry, and alumni and the perceived value as reflected in the level of student engagement in those opportunities. Three broad areas of study that stem from this issue include 1) student motivation and learning in co-curriculars, 2) their navigation and tradeoffs among curricular and co-curricular opportunities, and 3) institutional support for co-curriculars to open multiple pathways that promote engagement and persistence in engineering.

A successful candidate will be expected to develop data collection instruments, submit research protocols for ethics review, perform data collection and analysis, and collaborate on publication and proposal development. In addition, they will contribute to evolving the vision and developing the ‘connective tissue’ between the research areas described above.

A successful candidate for this position also requires quantitative and qualitative research experience, excellent writing skills, demonstrated ability to take initiative, proven experience collaborating across disciplines, and the ability to manage multiple projects. The candidate will also contribute to mentoring of undergraduate and graduate research assistants in the EPTL.

POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Buffalo in the DAREtoCARE Lab

The successful candidate will work as a postdoctoral scholar under the supervision of Dr. Matilde Sánchez-Peña, at the Diversity Assessment Research in Engineering to Catalyze the Advancement of Respect and Equity (DAREtoCARE) Lab. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Lecturer or Assistant Professor, Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Technological University

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in the Craig M Berge Engineering Design Program at the University of Arizona

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Craig M Berge Engineering Design Program in the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona. The postdoc will perform research in the pedagogy of engineering design across multiple engineering disciplines including the interdisciplinary senior capstone design course. The goal is to identify curricular enhancements across the disciplines to improve students’ ability to create innovative solutions to engineering design problems, assess these enhancements, and share findings to the broader engineering education community.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Conducting a review of engineering design activities within the sixteen different engineering curricula offered in the college including establishing relationships with design skills required to successfully complete industry sponsored capstone projects.
Development of assessment of engineering design activities, data collection and analysis resulting in scholarly papers.
Identification of design opportunities throughout the sixteen engineering curricula, including interdisciplinary opportunities, community design projects, and integration of diversity, equity, inclusiveness.

ERM Announcements, March 1, 2022

Dear ERM members,

I hope things are going well with each of you. The weather has warmed up slightly in Indiana (although I will not count on this weather staying), and Spring Break is only two weeks away! I’m looking forward to the change in seasons.

When I first moved to Indiana, I would have said that Fall was my favorite season—it brought (somewhat) cooler weather to the Southeastern part of the United States along with beautiful leaves and college football season. But, I’ve found that now I would say my favorite season is Spring. Maybe it’s the longer and much colder winters that make me appreciate green things, sun, and warmer weather. I always find that my spirits lift as we approach this part of the year. I hope you’re able to find some time for either being outdoors or your own form of excitement about renewal.

CALL FOR APPLICANTS: Engineering Education Research (EER) May Summer School in Europe

An EER Summer School, organized by the KU Leuven University and SEFI (the European Society for Engineering Education), will be held 2-6 May 2022 in Leuven, Belgium. The registration fee of €800 covers tuition, room (double occupancy) and board. This Summer School provides an opportunity for those new to EER — PhD students and people interested doing a PhD in engineering and science education research — to learn from experts and peers. Workshop topics include:
· What makes engineering education research so special?
· Quantitative Research Methods
· Qualitative Research Methods
· Mixed Methods
All sessions have a highly interactive format, facilitating exchange of ideas and opinions in general or in the context of the participants’ research and projects. Participants will prepare work before the summer school and engage in exercises each day to prepare for in-depth discussion of specific topics.

CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS: Mixed Methods Studies Involving Psychological Constructs or Processes

Have you conducted a mixed methods study about learning, motivation, identity, perceived belongingness, or some other psychological construct or process? Was there something unique in your design that you think is worth highlighting in a methodologically focused manuscript? If you answered yes to those two questions, please consider submitting a manuscript to the special issue of Methods in Psychology, co-edited by Elizabeth Creamer (Professor Emerita, Virginia Tech) and myself, David Reeping (Assistant Professor, University of Cincinnati). The open-access fee is waived for articles accepted to the special issue.

The special issue title is Advancing Methodological Boundaries by Innovation in the Pairing of Mixed Methods with Qualitative Methods (full description is linked here), so we are particularly interested in manuscripts with strong qualitative strands. Topics might include, but are not limited to:
strategies that paired mixed methods with one or more qualitative methods (e.g., grounded theory, case study, discourse analysis, etc.)
unconventional sources of data or data collection methods (e.g., social media, mapping)
reflexivity about an effective approach to collaboration and teamwork
adapting tables and figures (i.e., joint displays) to integrate qualitative and quantitative data during analysis, and
using qualitative software in creative ways.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Position UC San Diego – NSF AGEP Hiring Interventions for Representation and Equity (HIRE) Alliance

A postdoctoral position is available with Professor Stanley Lo in the Division of Biological Sciences at University of California San Diego as part of the Hiring Interventions for Representation and Equity (HIRE) Alliance project funded by the National Science Foundation (HRD-2113355). We are using design-based research to develop, implement, self-study, and evaluate a model to advance equitable hiring of teaching-focused faculty in STEM. Specifically, the position will collaborate with social science researchers, professional evaluators, and faculty fellows in the Alliance to examine how departmental and institutional factors may support or prevent the implementation of equitable faculty hiring practices.

POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Buffalo in the EPT Lab

The Department of Engineering Education (DEE) in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Buffalo invites candidates to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. The successful candidate will join the Engineering Problem Typology Lab (EPTL), focusing on research related to evidence-based pedagogy in supporting the professional formation of engineers. Work will span two areas of active research. The first area is reflected in the core idea of engineering problem typology (EPT) – the idea that engineers engage different types of problems in practice and that educational settings should provide experience with those different types of problems. The candidate will support research on the development and use of EPT as a framework to support design, facilitation, and reflection in problem-based learning environments. The second area considers the role of co-curriculars in the professional formation of engineers. Of particular interest is the apparent divergence between the value of co-curriculars as reflected in promotion by institutions, industry, and alumni and the perceived value as reflected in the level of student engagement in those opportunities. Three broad areas of study that stem from this issue include 1) student motivation and learning in co-curriculars, 2) their navigation and tradeoffs among curricular and co-curricular opportunities, and 3) institutional support for co-curriculars to open multiple pathways that promote engagement and persistence in engineering.

A successful candidate will be expected to develop data collection instruments, submit research protocols for ethics review, perform data collection and analysis, and collaborate on publication and proposal development. In addition, they will contribute to evolving the vision and developing the ‘connective tissue’ between the research areas described above.

A successful candidate for this position also requires quantitative and qualitative research experience, excellent writing skills, demonstrated ability to take initiative, proven experience collaborating across disciplines, and the ability to manage multiple projects. The candidate will also contribute to mentoring of undergraduate and graduate research assistants in the EPTL.
