Dr. Cindy Finelli at the University of Michigan is looking to fill a one-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position on an NSF-funded project investigating how flexible classrooms influence instructors’ selection of learning activities, instructors’ use of formative assessment, and students’ interpretation of in‐class activities. The postdoctoral research fellow will collaborate with Cindy and her colleagues on all aspects of the project including: refining and validating research instruments; collecting, synthesizing, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; developing and implementing professional development for instructors; and preparing conference and journal papers. 5. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Engineering Education and Learning Analytics Research at Purdue University

This is a full-time position within the School of Engineering Education, in Purdue University’s College of Engineering and will be jointly supervised by Prof. Kerrie Douglas and the College of Engineering’s Dean Mung Chiang. This position is for the 2018-19 academic year and may be extended based on the performance. The ideal candidate for this position will be a computer-related engineering or computer science PhD and have a career interest in how to use machine-generated data to understand learning and social behavior in online environments. The applicant should have a strong knowledge of databases and data mining techniques.

This post-doctoral research fellow position will be part of an interdisciplinary research team examining how to assess learner behavior and achievement in ways that can be instructionally useful in large online engineering or data science courses. The assessment framework combines many forms of data, including surveys and tests, as well as user log files. Responsibilities include, but at not limited to, helping to create a process of transforming event log data into a format ready for analysis, assisting in the data mining of event logs (i.e., machine learning, social networks, natural language processing and deep learning techniques), and preparing conference and journal manuscripts to disseminate the results.

We are pleased to announce the 2nd Dissertation Institute, an interactive workshop for underrepresented (African American, Native American, Pacific Island and Hispanic American) graduate students in engineering will take place June 10th – 15th on the University of Houston. The primary goal is to address issues that prolong completion times for those at the dissertation proposal preparation and dissertation completion stages of the targeted population. The Institute is funded by the National Science Foundation and hosted by Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech.

The Dissertation Institute will focus on skills and strategies needed to successfully complete the dissertation process and provide networking opportunities to build connections for future collaborative career advancement. Institute participants will build new writing habits, work on their dissertation or dissertation proposal, and learn skills that will help them continue making progress when they return to their institutions. The Cooperative and Experiential Education Division (CEED) of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) is sponsoring a research grant. This opportunity is for both experienced and aspiring researchers.

CEED seeks to promote research activity that will advance and strengthen the understanding of experiential, cooperative, and work-integrated education and internships in post-secondary education. An awarded study may sample from a variety of disciplines and ideally will include some sampling from engineering and/or computer science. Regardless, the results must have direct educational implications for the disciplines of engineering and or computer science along with the other disciplines that may be included.

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) envisions widespread, inclusive, and equitable environments in engineering, academia, and industry that embrace individual differences and leverage diversity for a better engineered tomorrow. The 2017-2018 year celebrates ASEE’s 125 years at the heart of engineering education. The ASEE Diversity Committee honors this celebration with a focus on diverse teams in engineering and engineering education, because teamwork is at the heart of engineering. Students from a broad range of backgrounds and among various grade levels (P12, undergraduate, and graduate) are invited to share their perspective on diversity in engineering teams by submitting an entry into the essay and/or video contests. Each entry should clearly answer the prompt provided below and follow all contest rules.

10. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Cooperative and Experiential Education Grant

The Cooperative and Experiential Education Division (CEED) of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) is sponsoring a research grant. This opportunity is for both experienced and aspiring researchers.

CEED seeks to promote research activity that will advance and strengthen the understanding of experiential, cooperative, and work-integrated education and internships in post-secondary education. An awarded study may sample from a variety of disciplines and ideally will include some sampling from engineering and/or computer science. Regardless, the results must have direct educational implications for the disciplines of engineering and or computer science along with the other disciplines that may be included.

11. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Survey on Engagement in Professional Development

As part of an NSF-funded study, a team is seeking participants from broad range of engineering disciplines whose members may be engaged in education across all ASEE Professional Interest Councils and every ASEE PIC division. The purpose of the study is to determine the extent to which professionals from across all engineering disciplines who are involved in Computer Science Education & Engineering Education, and ways in which they may be engaged, or not, in related professional development activities (DUE-1323633). In recognition of ASEE’s cooperation, the team is offering an incentive to the organization. Specifically, for each completed survey, we will donate a nominal amount ($1) to support students or other professionals in professional development activities in a manner decided by ASEE Division leadership. We are asking survey participants to identify their PIC and their Division and we will provide you with this information so that you can allocate this fairly.
