Dear ERM members,

These are my last set of announcements during my term. It feels surreal that I’ve been doing this bi-weekly messaging for two years already. I want to thank the community for allowing me to serve in this role and to share a little bit about my thoughts or life in your inbox every couple of weeks. I have many people to thank for their service to ASEE ERM over this past year. I look forward to getting a chance to publicly recognize those folks during our combined ERM Business Meeting and Annual Community Celebration and Awards Reception. As a reminder, please mark your calendars for June 27 from 3:15-4:45 pm in Ballroom 3, Baltimore Convention Center.

We have a ton of wonderful programming at the upcoming conference including ERM-sponsored workshops on Sunday, our sessions with our Best Paper and Best Diversity Paper awardees presentations, a panel on the newInternational Handbook on Engineering Education Research, the Meet the Engineering Education Pioneers Session, a session on the journal publication process for Journal of Engineering Education, and a ton of other amazing technical sessions.   1. NEW OPPORTUNITY: NSF Ideas Lab for Personalized Learning in Engineering Education

The Directorate for Engineering at the National Science Foundation announced plans to employ an Ideas Lab to stimulate interdisciplinary research into emerging technologies for Personalized Learning in Engineering Education  https://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=307280&org=EFMA We anticipate bringing together expertise in engineering education, learning science, sensing, machine learning, and neuroscience.

  1. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: AAHHE Faculty Fellows Program – Application 6/5

 

The American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) invites nominations for its 2023-2024 AAHHE Faculty Fellowship Program (FFP). The AAHHE FFP is a six-month program with a primary goal to prepare Latina/o/x new faculty who are beyond their first year on the tenure-track for successful careers in academia and beyond and to increase the number of tenured and promoted Latina/o/x faculty.

The AAHHE FFP aims to a) provide strategies to assist tenure-track faculty in achieving their scholarly and career goals, b) build community and network with other Latina/o/x faculty, and c) develop future leaders who are dedicated to uplifting their communities. The AAHHE FFP will run from late September 2023 to March 2024.

Eligibility
To be considered, applicants must: a) be a Latina/o/x faculty in a tenure-track position beyond year one by the start of the AAHHE FFP, and b) exhibit a track record of service and fem/mentoring to the Latina/o/x community.

Plans for the 2024 Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES) are going well! The conference will be January 4-6, 2024 at KLE Technological University, Hubballi, Karnataka, India. Studies in Engineering Education invites applications for new Associate Editors. As the journal grows, we are excited to expand the editorial team. Associate editors (AEs) are responsible for soliciting external reviews of articles, synthesizing the reviews and their own reading of the article, and making a recommendation to the journal editors. The International Handbook of Engineering Education Research (IHEER) has recently been released and is available Open Access (through support from NSF). This comprehensive handbook offers a broad overview of contemporary research on engineering education and its practical application. Drawing on the work of 100 expert contributors from over 20 countries, this volume covers both emergent and established areas of research within engineering education, giving voice to newcomers to the field as well as perspectives from established experts.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Upcoming National Effective Teaching Institute offering – NETI-2A Online

 

Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will be offering the advanced workshop NETI-2A, Forming, Managing & Assessing Student Teams, August 7-8, 2023 1:00-5:00 pm EDT each day. This workshop will develop participants’ ability to manage student teams – particularly in the context of team-based learning strategies. Teamwork can be taught, but students require guidance, practice, and feedback. They also need to be held accountable for their behavior. Research shows that there are best practices for how to form teams, manage teams, and assess teams to improve student outcomes while maintaining an inclusive and welcoming learning environment. NETI-2A participants do not need to have attended NETI-1 but should already be familiar with learning strategies that require students to interact in groups and teams. The registration fee for the workshop is $500 per participant, and includes an electronic version of presentation materials and other resources.   1. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Student panels at FIE 2023

 

Hello students!

The technical program and organizing committees for FIE 2023 would like to invite you to submit a proposal for undergraduate and/or graduate student panels. Since this is the first time FIE offers this opportunity, we encourage topics of the type:

  • First year experiences and policies,
  • Student experiences in their respective programs and campuses,
  • Interdisciplinary capstone projects,
  • Broadening participation (e.g. DEI, HSI, HBCU, MSI, Land Grant),
  • Mental health (e.g. Well-being, community building),
  • Governance at engineering schools,
  • Others (e.g. AI Tools-ChatGPT, Transformational Engineering Education)

Please follow the instructions and rubrics for panels under submission guidelines on our website. The approximate time allotted for each student panel is 40 minutes. The due date for submissions is June 26th, 2023

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:Looking for part-time instructor work with far reach and high impact?

 

UR2PhD PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS OPENING

We are seeking instructors for a new CRA program called UR2PhD (https://cra.org/ur2phd/), whose goal is to vastly increase the number of women students (particularly Black, Latina and Native women students) who have high-quality undergraduate research experiences and continue into PhD programs.

UR2PhD is a national, virtual program with three pillars: (1) early undergraduate research support and training, (2) graduate student mentor training, and (3) a bridge program to support students between their first research experience and application to a PhD program.

We are currently seeking two instructors for the undergraduate research support and training pillar:

  • Early Undergraduate Research Support and Training: Instructors will teach a 12-week virtual, synchronous research methods course and support program for new undergraduate researchers. The course will teach students about the foundations of research (e.g., reading a research paper, doing a literature review, identifying and communicating a research problem, etc.) as well as foster a network of support for these new undergraduate researchers. The curriculum is being developed this summer. All materials needed to teach the course will be provided to the instructors. We anticipate that instructors will be responsible for 30-40 students each.

Instructors will work closely with the UR2PhD leadership team (Christine Alvarado, Lori Pollock,

Monique Ross, and Kelly Shaw) who have experience developing and teaching similar programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and teach all aspects of the course including leading synchronous sessions (likely 1 per week), assigning homework, engaging with students between sessions, and grading and providing feedback on assignments.
  • Coordinate between instructors, with the research mentors, and with the UR2PhD team.

Qualifications:

  • Experience leading research with undergraduate students (required);
  • Experience teaching student-facing programs (required);
  • History of using identity inclusive instructional practices (required);
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills (required);
  • Experience teaching a similar course (preferred);
  • Experience working with programs designed to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in computing (preferred);

Timeline:

The course is tentatively scheduled for September 18-December 8, but these dates are subject to change slightly. The instructor should be available to begin working with the UR2PhD team in late August, 2023.

 

Compensation:

Instructors for the undergraduate research methods course will each be given a $12K stipend for their work.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Virginia Tech Department of Engineering Education Instructor in General Engineering

 

The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for Instructor in General Engineering. Applications are invited from individuals dedicated to undergraduate teaching and student engagement. We are particularly interested in a candidate with experience in teaching courses in engineering application of software tools (including CAD, computational programming, and/or data acquisition) and/or experience in teaching problem solving, design, and professionalism at the undergraduate level. Our instructor will work closely in a diverse teaching team environment and have an openness to interactive and inclusive pedagogies.

The opening is for one non-tenure track restricted faculty position at the rank of Instructor. Responsibilities will include teaching of up to 12 credit hours per semester in general engineering. Opportunities for supplemental summer and winter teaching assignments are possible.

Required Qualifications

The academic qualification required for this position is an M.S. in an engineering or related field. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively teach engineering courses at the undergraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications

Further graduate study and/or relevant industry experience will be beneficial, as will experience with engineering software and CAD programs typically used in first-year engineering programs such as MATLAB, Inventor, and Solidworks.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Researcher Position Available in Engineering Education at Virginia Tech

 

The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to take on a leadership role within the Engineering Competencies, Learning, and Inclusive Practices for Success (ECLIPS) Lab. This role will be funded by the National Science Foundation funded project: CAREER: Sustainable Racial Equity: Creating a New Generation of Engineering Education DEI Leaders (NSF# 2144978). This project aims to explore the beliefs, experiences, educational training, and research that supports the development of effective engineering education leaders who are assuming roles focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Postdoctoral Associate will work closely with Dr. Homero Murzi to coordinate interviews with DEI leaders across the nation, develop and deploy a nationwide survey, develop educational interventions, and lead ECLIPS lab research activities.

  1. POSITIONS ANNOUNCEMENT: Two Postdoctoral Scholars in Engineering Education Research at Texas A&M University

Job Summary: Texas A&M University’s Multidisciplinary Engineering department is seeking two postdoctoral scholars in the area of engineering education. The postdoctoral scholars will participate in data collection and analysis, conduct research and assessments with faculty and students, prepare manuscripts, present at conferences, and participate in grant writing. The position will also provide the opportunity for scholars to develop personalized professional development plans to support their own career advancement. Candidates nearing graduation are encouraged to apply. The successful candidates for this position are expected to have strong quantitative and qualitative research knowledge and skills and excellent communication capabilities, especially writing skills. Specific details about each of the two positions are provided:

  • One of the positions will enable the scholar to research, develop, and implement innovative strategies at the college level that promote effective learning in engineering education and contribute to the methodology of forming the engineer of 2050. How do we prepare students for jobs that do not yet exist, technologies not yet invented, and problems we are unaware of? How do current technologies, such as ChatGPT, impact the learning process? Increasing the success of students involves a complex network of strategies and tools that this scholar will incorporate. The scholar will work alongside Dr. Kristi Shryock,Frank and Jean Raymond Foundation Inc. Endowed Associate Professor, and will be co-mentored by Dr. George Ligler, Professor and Dean’s Excellence Chair in Multidisciplinary Engineering and member of the National Academy of Engineering.

  • The second position will focus on research on practice and effectiveness of multi- and inter-disciplinary engineering education, programming and outcomes of high-impact practices, and how broad definitions of diversity can maximize positive results in engineering education. Key research questions will investigate characteristics of existing students attracted to innovative academic programs, how these programs can increase added value for students, how recruiting can be improved, and how successes can be transferred across programs and institutions. They will work alongside Dr. Kelly Brumbelow, Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Multidisciplinary Engineering, and will be co-mentored by Dr. George Ligler, Professor and Dean’s Excellence Chair in Multidisciplinary Engineering and member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Required Qualifications: Hold a PhD in an engineering discipline and have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career that includes a focus on research in engineering education at the college level. Candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills and are expected to work well in a team setting.

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as can be arranged with a two-year appointment envisaged, contingent upon successful evaluation after year one.

Salary Range: $54,000 to $61,000 per year, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Hours: 40 hours per week

Dear ERM members,

I am pleased to share the results of our ERM elections with you. Congratulations to James Huff who will be our new ERM Chair and to Bryce Hughes and Jessica Swenson who will be our new ERM Directors! A big thank you to Jay Pembridge and Cassandra McCall, who have served as Directors for the past two years.

We will also have other positions transitioning including our senior AFG Chair, Ana Rynearson and Catherine Berdanier and Benjamin Ahn, who have done a fantastic job managing yet another new system for ASEE 2023. Thank you each of you for your service to the Division! There are several other positions that may be reappointed as our new chair steps in, and we will have the opportunity to recognize all of our board members and volunteers at ASEE.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Final Call for Participation: Seeking Recent or Upcoming Engineering and Engineering Education PhD Graduates with Positive Mentoring Experiences

 

To help better understand and support women doctoral candidates in engineering disciplines, we are looking for research participants and their mentors for our study.

Specifically, we are looking to interview individuals who identify as women and have completed (or are about to complete) a doctoral dissertation in an engineering discipline about their mentoring experiences and strategies that helped them navigate their pathway through graduate school. Each interview participant will receive a $25 Amazon e-gift card for their time. The full details of this IRB-approved study are on the informed consent page on the first page of the interest survey below.

  1. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Call for 2025/2026 Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES) Hosts

We invite institutions to submit an expression of interest for hosting the Research in Engineering Education Symposium 2025/2026 by 15 July 2023.

 

The Research in Engineering Education Network (REEN) is responsible for the biennial Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES), aimed at facilitating the dissemination of research and best practices throughout the global Engineering Education Research community. More details about REES and the REEN Governing Board may be found at our website. Our next REES will be in India in January 2024. Previous events have been held in Hawaii (USA), Davos (Switzerland, 2008), Palm Cove (Australia, 2009), Madrid (Spain, 2011), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, 2013), Dublin (Ireland, 2015), Bogota (Columbia, 2017), Cape Town (South Africa, 2019) and Perth (Australia, 2021), the last of which was our first hybrid event.

This call is for the REES that will be held in 2025 or 2026 depending on the time of year that suits the chosen destination. We invite interested institutions to submit an Expression of Interest (see below) to host this conference. Interested institutions will then be contacted for further discussions and if suitable, asked to submit a detailed application. Please refer to the Guidelines and General Requirements for potential hosts at the end of this document when preparing the expression of interest.

The Expression of Interest, to be submitted via email by 15 July 2023 should include:

  • The proposed host institution’s name and location
  • Proposed dates for REES
  • Expression of commitment to, and experience in engineering education research, including why the institution would like to host the conference
  • Contact person for further discussions
  • Any innovations or special features proposed for the conference (if applicable)
  • An indication of the level of support from academia, industry, professional, and communityorganizations
  • Details of the proposed venue if available
  • Any additional information that the proposed host believes will support their expression of interest.

Cal State LA’s NSF-funded Eco-STEM project seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in Engineering Education to support Eco-STEM’s research-based work to transform STEM education using an asset-based ecosystem model. Specifically, the Eco-STEM project focuses on shifting the metaphor in STEM education by using the ecosystem as a philosophical guide to promoting an organic and healthy environment that nurtures students, faculty, and staff to become individuals fulfilled professionally and personally. We are looking for a positive, adventurous, and open-minded candidate to work on this transformative, high-impact project. The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. Postdoctoral researcher responsibilities will include:

  • Work with the Eco-STEM team on the development and implementation of the Action Research Teaching Fellows Faculty Learning Community and the Department Chairs Learning Community, which focus on changing the mental models and promotes the transformations aimed by the project.
  • Work on the institutionalization of equitable and student-focused faculty development practices and procedures at Cal State LA.
  • Collaborate closely with the project team to design survey instruments, administer surveys, and clean and analyze data, utilizing a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  • Oversee communication and collaboration with survey administration sites so that data collection, analysis, IRB, etc. are set in place and research efforts are conducted both ethically and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with project team members to disseminate findings through peer-reviewed presentations, journal articles, and conference proceedings, as well as academic and practitioner conferences.

An earned doctorate in Engineering Education, Education, Social Sciences, Engineering or Computer Science or related field, from an accredited institution (or equivalent), is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may also be considered. For an appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of the appointment. We also require evidence of research experience in engineering or STEM education at the post-secondary level and evidence of relevant scholarly publications in Engineering Education or related fields.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Looking for part-time instructor work with far reach and high impact?

 

UR2PhD PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS OPENING

We are seeking instructors for a new CRA program called UR2PhD (https://cra.org/ur2phd/), whose goal is to vastly increase the number of women students (particularly Black, Latina and Native women students) who have high-quality undergraduate research experiences and continue into PhD programs.

UR2PhD is a national, virtual program with three pillars: (1) early undergraduate research support and training, (2) graduate student mentor training, and (3) a bridge program to support students between their first research experience and application to a PhD program.

We are currently seeking two instructors for the undergraduate research support and training pillar:

  • Early Undergraduate Research Support and Training: Instructors will teach a 12-week virtual, synchronous research methods course and support program for new undergraduate researchers. The course will teach students about the foundations of research (e.g., reading a research paper, doing a literature review, identifying and communicating a research problem, etc.) as well as foster a network of support for these new undergraduate researchers. The curriculum is being developed this summer. All materials needed to teach the course will be provided to the instructors. We anticipate that instructors will be responsible for 30-40 students each.

Instructors will work closely with the UR2PhD leadership team (Christine Alvarado, Lori Pollock,

Monique Ross, and Kelly Shaw) who have experience developing and teaching similar programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and teach all aspects of the course including leading synchronous sessions (likely 1 per week), assigning homework, engaging with students between sessions, and grading and providing feedback on assignments.
  • Coordinate between instructors, with the research mentors, and with the UR2PhD team.

Qualifications:

  • Experience leading research with undergraduate students (required);
  • Experience teaching student-facing programs (required);
  • History of using identity inclusive instructional practices (required);
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills (required);
  • Experience teaching a similar course (preferred);
  • Experience working with programs designed to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in computing (preferred);

Timeline:

The course is tentatively scheduled for September 18-December 8, but these dates are subject to change slightly. The instructor should be available to begin working with the UR2PhD team in late August, 2023.

 

Compensation:

Instructors for the undergraduate research methods course will each be given a $12K stipend for their work.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Virginia Tech Department of Engineering Education Instructor in General Engineering

 

The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for Instructor in General Engineering. Applications are invited from individuals dedicated to undergraduate teaching and student engagement. We are particularly interested in a candidate with experience in teaching courses in engineering application of software tools (including CAD, computational programming, and/or data acquisition) and/or experience in teaching problem solving, design, and professionalism at the undergraduate level. Our instructor will work closely in a diverse teaching team environment and have an openness to interactive and inclusive pedagogies.

The opening is for one non-tenure track restricted faculty position at the rank of Instructor. Responsibilities will include teaching of up to 12 credit hours per semester in general engineering. Opportunities for supplemental summer and winter teaching assignments are possible.

Required Qualifications

The academic qualification required for this position is an M.S. in an engineering or related field. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively teach engineering courses at the undergraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications

Further graduate study and/or relevant industry experience will be beneficial, as will experience with engineering software and CAD programs typically used in first-year engineering programs such as MATLAB, Inventor, and Solidworks.
