General Announcements

 

  1. ERM ANNOUNCEMENT:  Call for Nominations for ERM Directors and Secretary/Treasurer

The Education Research and Methods Division Bylaws state that in even-numbered years, the membership shall elect two Directors and a secretary/treasurer. As such, the nominating committee is opening nominations from April 15 through May 15, 2020. Below are descriptions of the positions open for nominations. All that is required are name, affiliation, and email via email to Nicole Pitterson –npitters@vt.edu during the nomination period.  Self-nominations are encouraged.

Directors:  Directors shall be elected to serve a two-year term and shall not be eligible to serve a second successive term. Two directors shall be elected each year. Directors may be asked to serve in a capacity as determined by the Chair.

Secretary/Treasurer:  The Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected in even-numbered years to serve a two-year term. The Secretary-Treasurer shall be responsible for the minutes of the meetings of the Executive Board, Executive Committee and the annual business meeting of the Division and shall maintain the financial accounts and records of the Division in coordination with the Society Headquarters staff. The Secretary-Treasurer shall make a written financial report at each meeting of the Executive Board.

Elections are scheduled to be held May 16 – June 1, 2020.  Details on how to vote in elections will follow at a later date.

 

  1. JEE  ANNOUNCEMENT:  JEE Transparent Peer Review Survey

The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE) has been invited to participate in a pilot program at Wiley called Transparent Peer Review, but before agreeing to participate, we would like input from our authors and reviewers. Therefore, I invite you to complete a survey to provide your feedback on implementing Transparent Peer Review, which would be optional for authors submitting their work to JEE. The survey is short – it should take no more than five minutes to complete – and it will close on April 30, 2020. We will share the results of this survey in an editorial article in the journal. Background Information: Wiley is enabling Transparent Peer Review in collaboration with ScholarOne and Publons for selected journals; the Journal of Engineering Education has the opportunity to participate in this pilot program. If an author opts into Wiley’s Transparent Peer Review process, when their article is published, the reviewers’ comments, the authors’ responses, and the editors’ decision letter will be published online in Publons and linked to the article. An example of a transparent peer review can be found here. The content of the Transparent Peer Review report is shared, but reviewers choose whether to reveal their identity and can change their choice at any point in the review process. Authors choose transparent peer review when they submit their manuscript to the journal, and can opt out at any point in the review process.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:  Brief Survey on Rapid Transition to Online Teaching

As we are at a unique time in higher education, we are hoping to capture this experience in a research study.  We are asking individuals in the engineering community who are experiencing a transition to online teaching to participate in an online survey and answer a short prompt. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Answers will remain completely confidential and be deidentified prior to dissemination.

  1. CALL FOR PAPERS: A Special Issue on “Asset-Based Pre-College Engineering Education to Promote Equity’’

The Journal of Pre-college Engineering Education Research (J-PEER) invites original manuscript submissions that investigate the design, learning and social processes, and outcomes of asset-based engineering education.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  Engineering Education Postdoctoral Fellow Department of Engineering, Wake Forest University

The Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University in collaboration with the Program for Leadership and Character seek a creative and dynamic scholar with a research background in engineering, engineering education, assessment and measurement, learning sciences, psychology, STEM education, or other related fields to serve as a Postdoctoral Fellow. The two-year position is funded by a grant from the Kern Family Foundation to support the development and assessment of character interventions in the context of the undergraduate engineering program and in the context of entrepreneurial mindset. The successful candidate will collaborate directly with engineering faculty, an character education postdoctoral fellow, graduate student research assistants to design and coordinate character interventions, assist with course development workshops, conduct empirical studies and prepare manuscripts for publication to study the efficacy of these pedagogical interventions. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, assessment and measurement, learning sciences, psychology, STEM education, or other related fields. We are seeking colleagues who share our vision, who embody the same attributes we desire in our students, and who want to contribute to an educational environment that emphasizes excellence in engineering, entrepreneurial mindset, creative design and problem solving, and broad societal impact.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  Postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

The Department of Communication and Learning in Science at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, announces a call for a postdoctoral position. The position is fully funded for 24 months, starting in October 2020 (or another date agreed with the applicant).  This is an open call for a postdoctoral project focusing on any topic bridging at least two (ideally more) of the following broader areas of research with a higher education focus:

ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: FIE 2020 Paper Reviewers Needed
The Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference is a major international conference focusing on educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education. The conference is organized by ERM, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Education Society. This year, the conference will be held in Uppsala, Sweden! We hope you will consider joining us for FIE 2020.

2. ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: Request for Volunteers for ERM Best Diversity Paper Reviews and Best PIC IV Paper Committee

ERM requests volunteers to help review papers for the Best Diversity Paper Award and for the Best PIC IV Paper.

After papers are finalized on April 6th, program chairs will have until April 27th to forward the division’s nomination for the best paper process. The best paper from PIC IV will need to be chosen by May 11. Each PIC Chair (that’s me for PIC IV) will then forward their best paper for consideration of the overall best paper, which will be chosen by May 24th.

4. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: STEM Identity & K12 Mentoring Research Study

We are researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) identity development during K12 outreach and education programs. We are seeking participants that currently coordinate such programs through a college or university. If you are interested in participating in the research, please take a short online survey. The survey should take about 5-minutes to complete.

5. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: 2020 WEEF/GEDC Conference: First Call for Papers
We invite you to participate in WEEF-GEDC 2020 and submit an abstract. Guidelines for submission may be found here: https://weefgedc2020.org/submission-of-abstracts/ Key Date: The deadline for submission of abstracts is 20 April 2020. After review of the abstracts, selected submissions will be invited to submit a full paper based on the abstract, which will undergo a second round of peer review. Those that wish to only submit a revised Abstract to the conference may do so. All peer-reviewed full conference papers presented will be published in the conference proceedings, which will be submitted for inclusion in IEEE Xplore. A selection of conference papers will be given the opportunity to be upgraded for a special edition of the SAIEE Africa Research Journal, which will then be submitted for inclusion in IEEE Xplore.

Call for Mini-Symposia is now open. We also invite you to submit proposals for a mini-symposium. A mini-symposium consists of a full 90-minute conference session organised by submitters. We welcome proposals for innovative uses of this time. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Post-Doc/Project Manager Position Open for Physics Education Project at Florida International University
The STEP UP Project (www.stepupphysics.org) is looking to hire a postdoc/project manager at Florida International University. Two research universities (FIU and Texas A&M Commerce) and two national organizations (AAPT and APS) lead the STEP UP project which focuses on mobilizing thousands of high school physics teachers around the country to support and inspire young women in physics. STEP UP resources and materials have been found to significantly improve students’ attitudes towards learning physics (especially women) by disrupting stereotypic cultural narratives and creating communal classroom spaces.
