1. ERM AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT: 2018 ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant Winners

The ASEE ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program is designed to encourage and honor promising new educators and/or researchers who have demonstrated potential for substantial contributions to the field of engineering education research and scholarship. The ERM AFG Committee is pleased to announce the 2018 AFG recipients:

2. ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: ASEE 2018 Brouhaha Tickets on Sale

Join us for the ASEE ERM Brouhaha—our annual social gathering where you can catch up with old friends and make new connections. Our Brouhaha will be on Tuesday, June 26th, 7-9pm at the Clark Planetarium. Located in downtown Salt Lake City near the Convention Center and next to the TRAX Planetarium stop, there will be plenty to see and do at the Clark Planetarium! Enjoy the ERM annual awards ceremony, meet this year’s Apprentice Faculty Grant awardees, and explore the Planetarium’s impressive meteorite collection. There will be a DJ playing music, and the dinner will be catered by one of Salt Lake City’s top caterers, LUX catering.

3. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Fellow Position Available at Colorado State University

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University is seeking a full-time postdoctoral fellow specializing in engineering education. The successful candidate will pursue research activities related to the NSF award 1519438 titled “Revolutionizing Roles to Reimagine Integrated Systems of Engineering Formation,” as part of the Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) initiative. Now in its third year, the project team seeks to conduct research and analyze data related to the project. The fellow will have the opportunity to work as part of a larger team dedicated to this initiative, and to participate in relevant meetings, conferences and workshops.

4. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Multiple Tenure Track or Tenured Faculty in Computer Science or Engineering Education, Florida International University

Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida, invites applications and nominations for open-rank faculty including the position of Founding Director of the newly formed school dedicated to computer science and engineering education. This new unit, which is part of FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing, adapts the engineering education research model established at other universities and will be the first engineering education department/school at a minority-serving institution. It will house two new planned degree programs: a Bachelor’s of Science in Interdisciplinary Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education.

Subject area: UpCERG (Uppsala Computing Education Research Group) has been active in discipline based education research for over 20 years and is an internationally well recognised group that uses a broad range of theories, tools and methods to address a wide range of educational challenges from multiple viewpoints in computing and engineering. With the announced position we aim to strengthen work regarding aspects, such as identity, culture, motivation, and behaviours, that influence learning in computing and engineering. The learning areas of interest to UpCERG are broad. They include mastering “core” computing subjects, like programming, as well as developing professional competencies in a wider sense, such as the ability to function in a heterogeneous international team. The learning cohort is a vital factor in our research and is not limited to university level students: other learners such as pre-school children, elementary and high-school students, as well as life-long learners are also of interest.

Duties: The position includes research and a limited amount (max 20%) of teaching. Appointment period: The position will be held for two years and can start as soon as possible.

Qualifications required: Candidates should have a Doctoral Degree (PhD or equivalent) in Computing Education Research, or a similar topic with documented work in the area of Computing Education Research, at most three years before the application deadline (this time will be extended for medical leave, parental leave, etc.). High-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals or conferences are expected. The applicant should be highly motivated, able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work. These competencies are as important as the technical qualifications. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement.

7. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Engineering Education and Learning Analytics Research at Purdue University

This is a full-time position within the School of Engineering Education, in Purdue University’s College of Engineering and will be jointly supervised by Prof. Kerrie Douglas and the College of Engineering’s Dean Mung Chiang. This position is for the 2018-19 academic year and may be extended based on the performance. The ideal candidate for this position will be a computer-related engineering or computer science PhD and have a career interest in how to use machine-generated data to understand learning and social behavior in online environments. The applicant should have a strong knowledge of databases and data mining techniques.

This post-doctoral research fellow position will be part of an interdisciplinary research team examining how to assess learner behavior and achievement in ways that can be instructionally useful in large online engineering or data science courses. The assessment framework combines many forms of data, including surveys and tests, as well as user log files. Responsibilities include, but at not limited to, helping to create a process of transforming event log data into a format ready for analysis, assisting in the data mining of event logs (i.e., machine learning, social networks, natural language processing and deep learning techniques), and preparing conference and journal manuscripts to disseminate the results.

George Fox University announces a tenure-track faculty position in biomedical engineering, to begin in August 2018. The University of Texas at Austin Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking qualified and highly motivated candidates to fill a non-tenure track Lecturer position to teach programming languages, network theory, and biomedical applications in computing. The Lecturer will teach two (2) introductory undergraduate Biomedical Engineering courses per semester with a focus on programming languages, network analysis, computing, and numerical methods. 10. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Virginia
The University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education seeks a postdoctoral research associate in STEM Education. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with a multi-institution research team on an NSF-funded research grant entitled, “A Study of a Technology-enhanced Curriculum Integrating Science, Engineering Design, and Computational Modeling to Achieve Synergistic Learning with Elementary Students.” This projects develops, implements and researches integrated science, engineering, and computational modeling activities in elementary school settings. This position is full-time including full benefits.

Primary responsibilities include: developing and implementing Next Generation Science Standards-aligned curricular units that integrate engineering, science, and computational modeling; and conducting design-based research in schools across Virginia and California. Other duties include supervising the work of graduate and undergraduate students, working with practitioners, researchers, and developers to create the technologies and curriculum, developing and leading professional development workshops, collecting and analyzing teacher and student data, as well as presenting research findings at professional conferences and publishing in scholarly journals. The postdoctoral researcher will engage in mixed-methods research, educational technology development and academic publishing in a strong and supportive environment with many opportunities to further the candidate’s career path. 11. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Engineering Education Graduate Research Consortium 2018

The ASEE Student Division is continuing to accept posters for the Engineering Education Graduate Research Consortium, which will be held at the 2018 Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Student Division will be partnering with other divisions to recruit mentors and incite greater feedback to students. Posters submitted to the Student Division Engineering Education Graduate Research Consortium DO NOT require a full paper for acceptance. Similar to a conference paper submission, students will be asked to submit an abstract of 250-500 words, which will reviewed in a double-blind peer review. If an abstract is accepted, the authors must submit a PDF of their poster for subsequent peer review. Both the abstract and final poster must be accepted to present at the conference.

Topics of interest are open to all areas of research in engineering education. Possible research directions include (but are not limited to): Assessment, Collaboration, Design, Diversity and Equity, Educational Technology, Instruction, Learning Outcomes, Professional Practice, Recruitment and Retention, Identity and Culture

12. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ASEE Design in Engineering Education Division Student Essay Competition

You love to design. You have taken both design and analysis-focused classes. As the ultimate stakeholder of design education, we look to you to imagine …

How might engineering design be used to better teach engineering analysis?

Engineering design and analysis are both complementary elements of engineering practice. Engineering education often begins with a strong foundation in analysis, followed by a culminating design experience. Consider… What if engineering design were integrated more widely throughout the curriculum? What if engineering design was taught before analysis? How would integrating design affect the rigor of an engineering degree? What types of projects could be used to teach engineering analysis more effectively and efficiently than problem sets?

Four winning student essay submissions will get to present their work as part of part of the ASEE DEED Postcard Poster Session. At the session, the winners will be honored, including the official awarding of $500 (to offset part of the cost of attending ASEE) and a certificate to each winning submission. A panel of judges from the Design in Engineering Education Division will review applications and select two undergraduate and two graduate student winners. Criteria used in evaluating the submissions will assess the degree to which the submission is: Aspirational – it sets a high bar for what might be, Innovative – it breaks beyond traditional assumptions about EDE and engineering analysis, Grounded – it provides a strong basis and rationale for what might be, and Well Communicated – it paints a clear picture of what might be.

13. CALL FOR PAPERS: IEEE Transactions on Education Special Issue on Using Design Projects to Spur Cognitive Development of Students in Science and Engineering

The journal solicits original manuscripts for a special issue exploring overlaps between design thinking/education/projects and theories on student development. Manuscripts appropriate for the special issue should be aligned with the aims and scope of ToE and generally address the guiding question: To what extent do design projects influence cognitive and epistemological development of undergraduates in science and engineering? Initial Submission Deadline: 15 August 2018. Papers must be submitted electronically to the journal’s ScholarOne web site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/te-ieee no later than 15 August 2018. For identification purposes the authors’ cover letter is expected to include the statement: “This is a submission to the Special Issue on Design and Student Development.” Without this information, the manuscript may not be assigned for

review for the special issue. The cover letter should also indicate the major area of scholarship related to the three IEEE categories: discovery, integration, or application.
