Hello everyone*,

I trust you and your loved ones are well wherever you currently are. I was pleased to see some of you at FIE in Sweden last week. It’s quite a sunny but windy day here in southwest Virginia. I hope the weather is lovely too in your area.

There are lots of announcements below. Please share broadly with anyone you think could benefit from these postings.

You may have noticed the announcements came from different people the last few months, Cass McCall in August, Matilde Sanchez-Pena in September and from me of course for October. Thank you for bearing with us as we filled in for Allison. She will be back full time later this month and will resume sending the bi-monthly announcements.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Rowan University: Engineering Education Graduate Program (Ph.D) Fall 2022 Virtual Open House

We invite prospective graduate students to join the faculty and current graduate students from Rowan University’s Experiential Engineering Education Department (ExEEd) for a virtual open house on Wednesday November 2nd, 2022 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm EDT (UTC-4). The virtual open house will provide an overview of the Ph.D. in Engineering program with a concentration in Engineering Education at Rowan University. It will also introduce prospective students to the various research focus areas for faculty within the department, and provide an opportunity to meet some of the current graduate students and learn more about their experiences in the program. Are you interested in gathering to talk about mental health and wellness in engineering? The Mental Health and Wellness in Engineering Virtual Community is an informal, approximately monthly meeting to discuss topics of mental health and wellness and initiate collaborations. All are welcome. Topics and discussions, as well as event days and times, will rotate each month. You are welcome to attend as many or as few sessions that make sense for your schedule.   1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:University of Michigan Engineering Education Research: Prospective Student Open House (HYBRID)

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM’s graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM’s EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) are part of a college-wide program, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. The Department of Engineering & Computing Education in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Engineering and Applied Science is accepting applications for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Education to further the research and study of how to best educate engineering students at all levels. Graduate students will gain expertise in theories related to the teaching and learning of engineering, research methodologies, and advancement in their chosen technical engineering discipline. Specializations include higher education research, pre-K-12 engineering education research, or industry and workforce development research.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Survey on Digitalization of the Engineering Curriculum

The increasingly digital world is increasingly being reflected in the way in which we practice and teach engineering.  Emergency remote instruction during the COVID pandemic has shown that indeed most of an engineering degree can be taught online; however, the majority of efforts in this space were digital versions of face-to-face teaching.  As we emerge from the pandemic it is timely to consider which parts of the curriculum matter most for student learning, and whether they should return to face to face delivery, or move towards digital native forms of learning.

The UNESCO Centre for PBL at Aalborg University is running a survey to evaluate faculty perceptions of how important a range of activities are for student learning, as well as how suitable those experiences are for digitalization. The items on this survey are not structured by the traditional timetabled experiences for student engineers (e.g. lectures / tutorials / laboratories); instead these experiences have been unpacked into the affordances that they provide.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Department Chair Search: Department of Engineering Education at OSU

The Department of Engineering Education (EED) (https://eed.osu.edu) at The Ohio State University (OSU) (https://www.osu.edu) is searching for a new department chair. The new chair should be a bold leader who can envision innovative ways for the department to educate the next generation of diverse engineering leaders. It is anticipated that the EED will grow in size and influence over the next 5 to 10 years. Through their strong record of ethical

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant/Associate Professor of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College

Harvey Mudd College invites applications for multiple open field tenure-track faculty positions in our General Engineering program. The Department of Engineering seeks a cohort of new colleagues with experience and knowledge in applications of engineering who can excel in teaching a broadly-based undergraduate curriculum focused on design, signals and systems, and engineering science. Candidates working at the interfaces of engineering disciplines who can help students to make connections across fields are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, professional growth, and promoting equity and inclusion among diverse students and colleagues. A Ph.D. or equivalent (terminal) degree in engineering or a closely related field is required. Industrial or other practical experience in the field is valued. We especially seek candidates from the fields of biomedical engineering, robotics/autonomy, and electrical engineering. The appointments are anticipated to be at the assistant or associate professor level.

Teaching opportunities include the department’s required courses in engineering sciences, participation on teaching teams in the design and systems engineering sequences, supervising sponsored projects in the Engineering Clinic program, and developing courses in the applicant’s area of specialty. All faculty at Harvey Mudd College contribute to the college’s Core Curriculum, which includes courses from each department, a first-year course in writing, and a course centered on the relationship between science and society.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Tenure-Track Faculty Position, Workforce Education at the University of Georgia

The Department of Career & Information Studies at the University of Georgia invites applications for a position as an Assistant Professor of Workforce Education to begin August 2023. The position is a tenure-track, academic year appointment with the possibility of summer employment. A doctorate in career and technical education, workforce education, or related field earned by the start date of the position is required. The department is interested in qualified candidates with prior research and/or instructional expertise related to career and technical education (CTE) teaching and learning at the secondary level, and the capacity for mentorship and teaching about issues across career and technical education disciplines. Individuals with experience in STEM-education related fields are also encouraged to apply.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Visiting Assistant Professor Position in Eng. Education at Purdue University

The School of Engineering Education at Purdue University invites applications for multiple Visiting Assistant Professors. Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in engineering education research ranging from pre-kindergarten through college and into engineering practice. Candidates must have a PhD, with at least one degree in engineering, education, or a related field.

The Visiting Assistant Professor will primarily teach in the first-year engineering (FYE) program, which includes two foundational courses: ENGR 131 – Transforming Ideas to Innovation I, and, ENGR 132 – Transforming Ideas to Innovation II, which focus on the engineering design cycle and programming languages, specifically MATLAB.  Based on enrollment needs, the Visiting Assistant Professor may teach other courses in the FYE program or in the multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary (MDE/IDE) program.

 The teaching load will be two courses in each of the academic year semesters.  Other responsibilities may include pursuing an independent research program of the candidate’s interests and other duties as assigned.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor, Fundamentals of Engineering Program, West Virginia University

The Fundamentals of Engineering Program (FEP) at West Virginia University invites applications and nominations for a Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor position. This is a nine-month, non-tenure track faculty rank position that is eligible for promotion and merit raises, which involves a level of effort of about 80% assigned to teaching and 20% assigned to departmental service. The teaching function involves classroom teaching of approximately 7 to 8 sections of Fundamental Engineering courses per academic year. The service element of the position involves serving on faculty committees, serving as liaison to other WVU units, and participating in planned student-related retention, recruitment, and outreach activities.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a minimum of a Ph.D. or Ed.D., including a B.S. and/or M.S. in engineering or a closely-related STEM field and a minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching at a senior high school level or above at the time of the appointment. The MEERCat center has $8M in funded research grants over the past 7 years focused on engineering education research in an engineering context, with a particular interest in research-to-practice initiatives to support student academic and professional outcomes. MEERCat research considered student outcomes at the course level via the Freeform grant, which takes a deep dive into student performance, faculty experience, and background factors to understand how they contribute to success in a core sophomore-level course. The RED grant considered how departmental culture influences the outcomes students achieve, as well as their experiences throughout the undergraduate program. The SUCCESS grant examined non-cognitive factors (personality, grit, identity, etc.) and their effect on student outcomes. Our newest Propagation project (funded via NSF IUSE) explores how the Freeform system is adapted and adopted by instructors at other institutions. This five-institution collaboration has already yielded a massive dataset of both quantitative and qualitative information.

MEERCat Post-doc role and responsibilities: We seek a post-doctoral scholar to be the lead qualitative researcher on the Propagation project. The ideal candidate for this role has significant experience with qualitative methods, prior experience in research-to-practice projects, an understanding of and appreciation for how large research teams achieve their objectives, and significant ambition to publish meaningful research in quality outlets. The successful candidate will lead publication efforts based upon the massive dataset we have already collected, drive our team toward new research questions and directions, and serve as a mentor for other MEERCat team members.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in qualitative analysis (including software tools such as NVivo)
  • Experience carrying out qualitative analyses with data sets from education, psychology,

sociology, anthropology, or similar research areas

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Initiative, creativity, and flexibility
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a large, multidisciplinary team
  • Strong prior experience in leading publication of academic manuscripts

Anticipated Activities and Responsibilities:

Postdoctoral Researcher: Teaching Engineering Equity Center, University of Michigan

With funding from the National Science Foundation, Michigan Engineering is creating a Teaching Engineering Equity (TEE) Center. The goal of the Center is to create teaching and learning environments where equity-centered perspectives are present in both technical content and instructional approach, leading to an engineering education in which students from a variety of backgrounds experience inclusion and belonging, and are prepared to work toward engineering solutions that help to alleviate inequities.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with an interdisciplinary project team of faculty researchers and graduate research assistants on a research strategy to develop an evidence-based pedagogical framework that describes a philosophy and approach for creating and implementing equity-centered engineering curricula and instruction. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Researcher will:

  • Assist in coordinating the work of the TEE Scholars and graduate research assistants and supervise the work of graduate research assistants.
  • Assist in the creation and validation of a pedagogical framework that supports the integration of equity-centered engineering learning objectives and content into engineering program curricula.
  • Develop strategies to achieve this integration and rubrics to assess the overall framework, including the implementation of DEIJ learning objective, learning activities, and student learning.
  • Conduct a literature review on DEIJ instructional approaches and learning objectives and their integration into disciplinary curricula, particularly in STEM fields.
  • Interview faculty and/or administrators at peer institutions on their DEIJ efforts in science and engineering to inform the development of the pedagogical framework.
  • Analyze data collected for key themes and pedagogical and curricular approaches appropriate for developing equity-centered engineering curricula, and also identify any gaps in understanding.
  • Interface with CRLT-ENGIN to share information relevant to the design and facilitation of CRLT-ENGIN’s Teaching Circles and benefit from the professional staff members’ experience and knowledge.

Key responsibilities will involve developing meeting agendas for project team and research team

meetings; developing survey instruments; identifying existing validated scales; and drafting, piloting, and refining interview and classroom observation guides to test the framework. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also work with the lead faculty member and TEE Scholars to develop presentations and/or reports to the project’s external advisory board and evaluators, and to coordinate and engage in project dissemination efforts.

Candidates should have:

  • A PhD in engineering education, higher education, STEM education, or a related field.
  • A commitment to and understanding of social justice and inclusion as well as equity-centered and/or antiracist pedagogies.
  • Experience in designing and conducting education research or evaluation research on undergraduate education.
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and strong interpersonal skills, including the capacity to offer thoughtful and clear guidance on research and curriculum projects.

A multidisciplinary research team at New Mexico State University is searching for a postdoctoral scholar to work with researchers from the Department of Sociology and College of Engineering at NMSU main campus in Las Cruces to conduct research funded by a NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE): HSI grant (NSF #1953466). The purpose of the grant is to evaluate the impacts of andragogical (adult, self-directed learning) methods and experiential learning on the academic and early career success of low-income and first-generation undergraduate engineering students.

Research duties will include

  • conducting relevant literature reviews
  • development, implementation, and analysis of quantitative longitudinal surveys and qualitative research to evaluate the impact of the e3 Initiative activities.
  • mentoring of a graduate research assistant
  • preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • preparation of materials for proposals, reports and presentations

The postdoctoral researcher will also engage in professional development activities as outlined in the NSF postdoctoral mentoring plan, including development of a work assessment plan, participation in teaching and research method workshops and seminars, participation in weekly research group meetings, and networking with visiting faculty/scholars. UM’s EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) are part of a college-wide program, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:Lafayette College TT Position in Engineering, Social Justice, and Inclusive STEM Studies.

 

The Lafayette College Engineering Studies Program invites applications for a new full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position focused on Engineering, Social Justice, and inclusive STEM studies to begin Academic Year 2023-2024. The program is a leader in undergraduate engineering education, offering a unique, interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering at an undergraduate-only liberal arts college that offers four ABET-accredited BS engineering degrees. The new faculty member will teach courses at the intersections of engineering, public policy, and inclusive STEM studies. This position will help to expand the Program’s course offerings and research related to engineering and social justice, inclusive practices in engineering education, questions of identity in the engineering design process, and/or equity and inclusion in the implementation of technologies for the public good. The position is integral to the strategic direction of our new Hanson Center for Inclusive STEM Education and represents an exciting opportunity to help shape the scope and impact of this interdisciplinary center as well as the Program, Engineering Division, and College.

Preferred candidates will hold at least one degree in engineering (undergraduate and/or graduate) and, by July 1, 2023, will have received a Ph.D. in engineering or other field that prepares them for this interdisciplinary position, such as Engineering Education, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Engineering and Public Policy. The teaching load is five courses per year (four in the faculty member’s first year), including sharing teaching responsibilities for the required Engineering and Public Policy course and offering electives from the candidate’s area of expertise. The School of Engineering Education at Purdue University invites applications for multiple Visiting Assistant Professors. Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in engineering education research ranging from pre-kindergarten through college and into engineering practice. The Visiting Assistant Professor will primarily teach in the first-year engineering (FYE) program, which includes two foundational courses: ENGR 131 – Transforming Ideas to Innovation I, and, ENGR 132 – Transforming Ideas to Innovation II, which focus on the engineering design cycle and programming languages, specifically MATLAB.  Based on enrollment needs, the Visiting Assistant Professor may teach other courses in the FYE program or in the multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary (MDE/IDE) program.

The MEERCat center has $8M in funded research grants over the past 7 years focused on engineering education research in an engineering context, with a particular interest in research-to-practice initiatives to support student academic and professional outcomes. MEERCat research considered student outcomes at the course level via the Freeform grant, which takes a deep dive into student performance, faculty experience, and background factors to understand how they contribute to success in a core sophomore-level course. The RED grant considered how departmental culture influences the outcomes students achieve, as well as their experiences throughout the undergraduate program. The SUCCESS grant examined non-cognitive factors (personality, grit, identity, etc.) and their effect on student outcomes. Our newest Propagation project (funded via NSF IUSE) explores how the Freeform system is adapted and adopted by instructors at other institutions. This five-institution collaboration has already yielded a massive dataset of both quantitative and qualitative information.

 

MEERCat Post-doc role and responsibilities: We seek a post-doctoral scholar to be the lead qualitative researcher on the Propagation project. The ideal candidate for this role has significant experience with qualitative methods, prior experience in research-to-practice projects, an understanding of and appreciation for how large research teams achieve their objectives, and significant ambition to publish meaningful research in quality outlets. The successful candidate will lead publication efforts based upon the massive dataset we have already collected, drive our team toward new research questions and directions, and serve as a mentor for other MEERCat team members.

  • Expertise in qualitative analysis (including software tools such as NVivo)
