9. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Cluster of Faculty Positions at the University of San Diego

The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at the University of San Diego (USD) invites applications for a cluster of faculty positions in engineering and computer science related to design thinking. We are especially interested in the application of design thinking to the fields of intelligent systems, computational biology, software engineering or healthcare including bioengineering.

In particular, the General Engineering department at USD is seeking to hire a tenure track faculty member to broaden the disciplinary expertise of our department. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in environmental engineering and/or bioengineering, though any interested candidate is encouraged to apply. The General Engineering department, founded in 2016, is currently developing a new cross disciplinary curriculum that infuses themes of social justice into engineering. We strive to graduate students who understand that engineering is an inherently socio-technical enterprise. The curriculum consists of two parts: 1) a broad technical foundation to prepare students for a range of engineering professions and 2) a concentration that will give students subject matter expertise in a particular area. Faculty joining the department will have a unique opportunity to shape a new curriculum from the ground up. We are committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourage applications from female and minority candidates. Questions can be directed to Dr. Susan Lord slord@sandiego.edu For more detail, please see http://www.sandiego.edu/engineering/about/jobs.php

12. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: 2018 Institute on Project-Based Learning

The 2018 Institute on Project-Based Learning (PBL), http://wp.wpi.edu/projectbasedlearning/2018-institute/ , will be held June 20-23, 2018, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts. Run by WPI in partnership with the Association of American Colleges & Universities, the Institute draws on more than 40 years of experience integrating project-based initiatives into undergraduate education.

This 2.5-day intensive workshop brings together teams of five or more faculty and administrators from colleges and universities to gain knowledge about project-based learning and make tangible progress to integrate PBL into their own curricula. The Institute includes a mix of interactive workshops, consultation with experts, and collaborative teamwork. Participants come to the Institute with a specific goal or project they would like to advance and leave with an enhanced understanding of PBL and a tailored plan to advance work on their own campuses as well as materials and examples. See http://wpi.today/umbc-impact-16 to learn more about how the Institute assisted the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County to advance initiatives on their campus.

Who Should Attend: The Institute is designed for faculty and administrators from a wide variety of institutions, including public, private, STEM, liberal arts, community colleges, and research universities, who are interested advancing project-based learning in their curricula.

Application Guidelines: Institute applicants are asked to propose a goal or a specific project they want to address. Applications will be judged on the extent to which the team is likely to benefit from the Institute and advance its project-based learning initiatives. 13. CALL FOR RESEARCH STUDY PARTICIPANTS: Seeking students to participate in a nationwide study

Dear Colleagues,
We are currently seeking undergraduate engineering students who identify as having a disability to participate in a national study exploring professional identity formation. Please consider forwarding this email to students enrolled in your program:
————
Dear Students,

Our research team, the majority of whom identify as people with various disabilities, is seeking volunteers to participate in a series of 60-90 minute interviews for a nationwide study exploring the professional identity formation of undergraduate civil engineering students who experience disabilities. In particular, we want to further understand how your experiences, skills, activities, values, and inter-personal relationships contribute to your career goals and how they shift over time. The results of this study will be used to enhance the educational policies and experiences of students with disabilities in civil engineering and in other engineering disciplines, more broadly.

Do I qualify to participate? You are eligible to participate in this study if you: 1) are 18 years old or older, 2) are enrolled in (or intending to enroll in) a civil engineering program, 3)experience some form of a disability such as learning disabilities, physical disabilities, cognitive disabilities, or developmental disabilities. Individuals who experience disabilities may participate in this study. Your disability does not need to have been officially diagnosed by a healthcare professional; documentation from your doctor and reporting your disability to your institution are NOT required. Disabilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
· Visual Differences (e.g., Stargardt’s Disease, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and other forms of complete or partial blindness)
· Hearing Differences (e.g., chronic buzzing or ringing in ears, deafness in one or both ears, and other forms of complete or partial hearing loss or difference)
· Learning or Developmental Differences (e.g., autism, asperger’s, obsessive compulsive disorder, dyslexia, or other forms or learning or developmental differences)
· Auto-Immune Disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus, lyme disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), type I diabetes, or other auto-immune diseases)
· Limb Differences (e.g., limb amputee or born without a limb)
· Mobility Differences (e.g., needing a walker, wheelchair, cane, or crutches or experiences difficulty walking or lifting/moving objects due to paralysis, stamina limitations, cerebral palsy, or other neuromuscular or orthopedic reasons)
I’m interested, so what do I need to do? If you are interested in participating in this study, please fill out and submit the following survey: http://bit.ly/2ylSic9. Participation in the survey is voluntary and confidential; your responses may be used in research published in professional journal articles, but your identity will not be revealed to anyone outside of the research team. If you have questions about the study or your eligibility for participation, please contact Cassandra Groen at cgroen@vt.edu.
