ASEE 2023 Updates, Check-in, and Deadlines

Hello ERM Members—

I’m writing on behalf of myself and Benjamin Ahn, who are your 2023 ASEE Educational Research and Methods Division Program Chairs. We have the honor of handling the abstract and paper review and acceptance processes for the ASEE 2023 conference, and the challenge of navigating this new NEMO system and all its quirks along with all of you.

First of all, thank you for your patience as we all navigate this new paper management system, NEMO.  As many of you have identified, there are some bugs in the system, including some folks: not being able to log in, not being able to accept/decline review requests, and/or not being able to see their submitted abstracts in the system. It seems very hit-or-miss with regards to whom these issues are affecting. While a few of you have reported some of these instances resolving if you log out and then log in again, others have not been able to solve them at all.  ASEE IT is aware of these issues, and for all our sakes, I hope they can get the system sorted before the paper deadlines! You can still feel free to email technical issues the conferences support email (conferences@asee.org) or ASEE IT support with your concerns.

We are also happy to double check for you that your abstracts are in our system if you cannot see your submissions in the NEMO portal (email us at ermchairs2023@gmail.comand we will get back to you.)

Second, most of you are aware that the abstract deadline has been extended to November 30. At that time, Benjamin and I will assign reviewers for the abstracts.  We would appreciate your timely review of those abstracts so that decisions can be passed back to authors before we leave for holiday break at the end of a long Fall semester.

Third, there have been a couple of questions that have arisen about workshops, panels, and special sessions.  There are two ways to submit a workshop: You can submit to the ASEE Workshop portal in NEMO when it opens (currently the system says it will open January 2, with a current deadline January 30) OR you can submit a workshop, panel, or special session to ERM specifically by emailing your proposal to our ERM gmail addressermchairs2023@gmail.com by that same January 30 deadline.  At that point, the ERM leadership team will convene a small panel to evaluate and select those that will be affiliated with ERM.  Unlike past years, where ERM has financially sponsored some of the workshops,  given the tenuous ASEE financial situation, at this point the division is not able to commit financial resources to workshops. Applicants should be aware that if their workshop is selected to be tagged as an ERM-affiliated workshops, they should assume they will be responsible for the corresponding workshop fees this year.

ERM Announcements, November 1, 2022

Dear ERM members,

It’s good to be back! I hope that the semester is going well for each of you. I know that it’s that time of year when everything seems to speed up and the crunch before the holidays is tough. I also hope that you had a good Halloween if you celebrate the holiday. We’re big fans of the book, Dragons Love Tacos, so my oldest son went trick-or-treating as a dragon and the baby tagged along as a taco. I am levying a candy tax for all of my work in the process.

I want to send a big thank you to the ERM Directors who faithfully sent out these announcements while I was out on leave: Drs. Matilde Sánchez-Peña, Cassandra McCall, and Nicole Pitterson! In such a busy time of year with all of the position announcements, it’s been important for news to continue to be distributed through the Division.

Members have been receiving updates about the current financial situation at ASEE from the Board of Directors. I don’t know more than what’s already been shared. The biggest issue at this time is cashflow. As someone who has been engaged with the organization for the past 10 years, I am thankful for the community ASEE has provided for me, my students, and to the field of engineering education researchers. I recently made my first ever charitable donation to the society (as opposed to regular dues). I’d encourage you to consider ways you can help support ASEE at this time. There are a number of ways that you can help:

  • Submit abstracts for the 2023 ASEE conference
  • Renew membership now, even if it does not expire yet
  • Refer colleagues to join the organization. Anyone in attendance at the 2022 ASEE conference received a referral credit that can be used as incentive.
  • Speaking of credit, if you are able to financially forgo the $50 credit given to attendees of the 2022 ASEE conference from the Board for registration or dues, that can also help
  • Make a charitable donation
  • Encourage your institution to be a sponsor of the annual conference

ASEE is an important resource for our community, and I hope that if you are able, you will consider continuing to support the organization at this critical time and as it rebuilds for the future.

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM’s graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM’s EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) are part of a college-wide program, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community.   1. CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Survey on Digitalization of the Engineering Curriculum

The increasingly digital world is increasingly being reflected in the way in which we practice and teach engineering.  Emergency remote instruction during the COVID pandemic has shown that indeed most of an engineering degree can be taught online; however, the majority of efforts in this space were digital versions of face-to-face teaching.  As we emerge from the pandemic it is timely to consider which parts of the curriculum matter most for student learning, and whether they should return to face to face delivery, or move towards digital native forms of learning.

The UNESCO Centre for PBL at Aalborg University is running a survey to evaluate faculty perceptions of how important a range of activities are for student learning, as well as how suitable those experiences are for digitalization. The items on this survey are not structured by the traditional timetabled experiences for student engineers (e.g. lectures / tutorials / laboratories); instead these experiences have been unpacked into the affordances that they provide.

ASEE is pleased to announce the selection of two new Co-Editors for the Journal of Engineering Education!

Dr. David B. Knight, Associate Professor of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech, and Dr. Joyce B. Main, Associate Professor of Engineering Education at Purdue University, will serve as the Journal’s Co-Editors beginning January 1, 2023. Both Dr. Knight and Dr. Main come to this role with extensive experience advancing JEE’s mission through their service on the Journal’s Editorial Board. Dr. Knight has served as Associate Editor of JEE since 2018 and Deputy Editor since April 2022, and Dr. Main has served as Associate Editor of JEE since 2019. We congratulate Dr. Knight and Dr. Main on their well-deserved appointments and thank outgoing editor Dr. Lisa Benson for her five years of outstanding leadership and service to the journal!

Since its origination in 1894 as ASEE’s flagship research publication, the Journal of Engineering Education has served to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education. Published four times a year and currently in its 111th volume, the Journal publishes empirical investigations, research reviews, and guest editorials in a wide variety of engineering education topics, including engineering epistemologies, learning mechanisms, diversity and inclusiveness, assessment methods, and more. These findings contribute significantly to the body of knowledge in engineering education and have led to substantial improvements in the field.   1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI-1) in-person Jan 3-5

Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will lead this long-standing foundational NETI workshop, which has been offered since 1991. Previous NETI programs have reached over 2800 participants from more than 365 different schools. Our past participant evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive. NETI-1, Course Design and Student Engagement, will be offered January 3-5, 2023, at the University of San Diego. The workshop features material for relatively new faculty members and other material designed to equip experienced faculty members to become teaching leaders and mentors on their campuses. Participants will include 60 faculty members from all branches of engineering, engineering technology, and other STEM areas. The registration fee is $1275 per participant, which covers organization and presentation costs, participant notebooks, lunches, and breaks. Participants also receive a copy of Felder & Brent’s Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide and the option of touring the School of Engineering Education’s facilities.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Post-doctoral Position: Teaching Engineering Equity Center at University of Michigan

 

Postdoctoral Researcher: Teaching Engineering Equity Center, University of Michigan

With funding from the National Science Foundation, Michigan Engineering is creating a Teaching Engineering Equity (TEE) Center. The goal of the Center is to create teaching and learning environments where equity-centered perspectives are present in both technical content and instructional approach, leading to an engineering education in which students from a variety of backgrounds experience inclusion and belonging, and are prepared to work toward engineering solutions that help to alleviate inequities.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with an interdisciplinary project team of faculty researchers and graduate research assistants on a research strategy to develop an evidence-based pedagogical framework that describes a philosophy and approach for creating and implementing equity-centered engineering curricula and instruction. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Researcher will:

  • Assist in coordinating the work of the TEE Scholars and graduate research assistants and supervise the work of graduate research assistants.
  • Assist in the creation and validation of a pedagogical framework that supports the integration of equity-centered engineering learning objectives and content into engineering program curricula.
  • Develop strategies to achieve this integration and rubrics to assess the overall framework, including the implementation of DEIJ learning objective, learning activities, and student learning.
  • Conduct a literature review on DEIJ instructional approaches and learning objectives and their integration into disciplinary curricula, particularly in STEM fields.
  • Interview faculty and/or administrators at peer institutions on their DEIJ efforts in science and engineering to inform the development of the pedagogical framework.
  • Analyze data collected for key themes and pedagogical and curricular approaches appropriate for developing equity-centered engineering curricula, and also identify any gaps in understanding.
  • Interface with CRLT-ENGIN to share information relevant to the design and facilitation of CRLT-ENGIN’s Teaching Circles and benefit from the professional staff members’ experience and knowledge.

Key responsibilities will involve developing meeting agendas for project team and research team

meetings; developing survey instruments; identifying existing validated scales; and drafting, piloting, and refining interview and classroom observation guides to test the framework. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also work with the lead faculty member and TEE Scholars to develop presentations and/or reports to the project’s external advisory board and evaluators, and to coordinate and engage in project dissemination efforts.

Candidates should have:

  • A PhD in engineering education, higher education, STEM education, or a related field.
  • A commitment to and understanding of social justice and inclusion as well as equity-centered and/or antiracist pedagogies.
  • Experience in designing and conducting education research or evaluation research on undergraduate education.
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and strong interpersonal skills, including the capacity to offer thoughtful and clear guidance on research and curriculum projects.

Open Position: Postdoctoral Scholar, School of Engineering

Start date: 10/15/2022, negotiable

This position is part of a Kern Family Foundation grant that focuses on undergraduate research experiences and will last for a maximum of three years. This position is housed in the School of Engineering at Campbell University and coordinates between efforts at NC A&T and other grant institutions as needed. This position requires a research-based approach to developing high-quality workshops, online modules, and classes for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in order to expand access to and improve undergraduate research experiences.

Development, implementation, and evaluation of these interventions is the main responsibility of this position. Development of best practices and/or a framework of mentoring undergraduates for research experiences is also expected. This position will require coordination of undergraduate research assistants and faculty who are implementing grant interventions. Additional opportunities can include mentored teaching experience(s), grant writing, article writing for research or practitioner journals, and presenting at conferences as desired. A multidisciplinary research team at New Mexico State University is searching for a postdoctoral scholar to work with researchers from the Department of Sociology and College of Engineering at NMSU main campus in Las Cruces to conduct research funded by a NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE): HSI grant (NSF #1953466). The purpose of the grant is to evaluate the impacts of andragogical (adult, self-directed learning) methods and experiential learning on the academic and early career success of low-income and first-generation undergraduate engineering students.

Research duties will include:

  • conducting relevant literature reviews
  • development, implementation, and analysis of quantitative longitudinal surveys and qualitative research to evaluate the impact of the e3 Initiative activities.
  • mentoring of a graduate research assistant
  • preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • preparation of materials for proposals, reports and presentations

The postdoctoral researcher will also engage in professional development activities as outlined in the NSF postdoctoral mentoring plan, including development of a work assessment plan, participation in teaching and research method workshops and seminars, participation in weekly research group meetings, and networking with visiting faculty/scholars. The Gallogly College of Engineering is rapidly growing with a strategic focus on increasing the number of engineering graduates and increasing our research portfolio. Our plan for student body growth is built around new programs that support and educate our student body in meaningful ways to recognize and encourage new ways of thinking, understanding and experiencing.

We have recently launched a new Engineering Pathways Program and are seeking three additional teaching-focused faculty members who are passionate about teaching and mentoring students. These faculty will be instrumental in designing and implementing our student-centered plan for growth and will be working collaboratively with each other, with our Gallogly Student Affairs Team, and with faculty and staff across the college.

Researcher seeks to hire a post‐doctoral fellow to work on collaborative research projects that focus on the examination and assessment of mentoring relationships and practices in the context of a national engineering research center. The post-doctoral fellow will work directly with Dr. Joi Mondisa, Assistant Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering and Engineering Education Faculty Member at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities:

The primary duties of the post‐doctoral fellow are to:

  • attend and facilitate workshop trainings and engage with center members;
  • perform literature reviews and meta-syntheses;
  • administer surveys and conduct semi-structured interviews;
  • analyze quantitative and qualitative data;
  • participate in collaborative project meetings of the team members;
  • present research at conferences and draft manuscripts for peer‐reviewed publication;
  • assist with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

The post-doctoral fellow will participate in weekly and regularly scheduled meetings. The post‐doctoral fellow work can be accomplished in the office/lab on the UM Ann Arbor campus OR through a remote option.

Required qualifications:

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in a STEM field, engineering education, higher education, psychology, sociology, or a related field. A demonstrated ability to work/collaborate with others and work independently.

Desired qualifications:

Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following: conducting engineering education/higher education/social science research using qualitative and/or quantitative research methods; instrument development and assessment; analyzing data; strong oral and written communication skills.
