ERM Announcements, May 15, 2020

Dear ERM members,

Hi again, ERM members! It’s May 15, which means it’s once again time for my exciting note to all of you! I hope you are all staying healthy and are doing well right now.

A few things I wanted to mention and highlight today…

First of all, the ASEE and ERM community have been working really hard these last few weeks on finalizing details for the June conference. I know many of you have questions and concerns about the virtual format, which I understand. Please know that our community is working hard to thoughtfully create the best event we can, given the circumstances! It won’t quite be the same as in person. But, we will make the best of it and will have a valuable event that we will definitely remember for years to come. I wanted to give a special shout-out to all of the ERM volunteers who have been working diligently to plan this year’s conference. While everyone is working so hard, I am especially thankful to Jay Pembridge (Embry-Riddle) for doing a fantastic job as program chair. This is a position that is already pretty challenging. Add a pandemic and an unexpected virtual conference to that, and there is a LOT of work to do fielding questions, planning events, and completing many, many, many other tasks that require a lot of detailed, thorough work. Thank you, Jay!

The second thing I want to point out is that TODAY is the deadline to nominate a colleague (or yourself!) to one of the open ERM positions. As of this morning, we did not have that many nominations, so please consider nominating someone! This is a fantastic way to get involved with ERM and to get some service to the profession. The ERM Executive Board is really an amazing group of people who I have enjoyed working with this past year. Details on nominations are below.

And lastly, to keep things positive and fun, I’d like to draw your attention to the ASEE announcement below. ASEE wants to show the human side of our division and is asking us to submit pet pics which will be displayed on their social media site. Show us the buddies you’ve been working at home with these past few weeks! I can’t wait to see the pics online.

Take care,

Sarah

ASEE ANNOUNCEMENT: Pets of the ERM division!
ASEE is trying to stay engaged with our members at this time, so we are creating some social media content to remind them of the “face” of ASEE and our members. We are looking for your contribution for a “pets of the ASEE ERM division” post.

Please send a picture of your pet, along with their name and maybe their favorite food or a silly fact about them. This can be a selfie with you, of course! This will go out on the ASEE social media platforms. Send to Drew at d.hallett@asee.org.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Research Study on the Impact of Covid-19 on Policies and Practices of Engineering Programs
We are conducting a study on the changes that universities and engineering programs, in particular, have had to make or are planning to make to their courses, policies, or practices in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Your responses will help us summarize the types of changes being made as well as put together a repository of those changes that we then can share. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and is anonymous. Results will be shared only in the aggregate.

If you agree to take the survey, we ask you to consider forwarding it to other colleagues of yours leading the engineering programs in the U.S. All those who complete the survey can enter a raffle of 10 Amazon gift cards worth $50 each.

The study has been approved by the University of Houston IRB. If you have questions about the approval, you may contact the IRB at (713) 743-9204 or cphs@central.uh.edu. If you have questions about the study, you may contact either one of us.

CALL FOR REVIEWERS: Reviewers needed for WEEF & EDC2020 Conferences
IFEES hosts the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) annually, a conference focused on bringing together the global community to build excellence in engineering education. The Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) meets in parallel to this event every two years. This year, WEEF&GEDC will be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa from 16–20 November 2020 (https://weefgedc2020.org). We would like to invite you to review abstracts and papers for WEEF&GEDC2020. Your contribution as a reviewer will help to develop the scholarship of engineering education, and ensure the high standards of the conference. Conference participants and authors are encouraged to review papers. All reviews will be double-blind, and we will ensure that you are not assigned a review with which you have a conflict of interest.

A focus for this event is building scholarship in engineering education amongst the global community. As such, we encourage people who are new to engineering education research and scholarship to review abstracts and papers. We have developed guidance to help you conduct effective reviews, which can be found here:
