- ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: Request for help in brainstorming new name for Brouhaha
The ERM Welcoming Committee is planning to change the name of the Brouhaha. This is for two reasons: 1) the current name does not feel community-driven or welcoming to many people, and 2) some people cannot get reimbursed to attend a “brouhaha.” We would like the community to provide input into name ideas before we make a final decision. - ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Review Apprentice Faculty Grant Applications
We are seeking volunteers to review applications for this year’s ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) program. - ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: 2020 Apprentice Faculty Grant Program Accepting Applications until February 21
The Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program within the Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) encourages and honors promising emerging engineering education scholars who have the potential for substantial contributions to the community.
In conjunction with the 2020 ASEE Annual Conference, the AFG program will grant up to four awards to emerging engineering education scholars, which may include: senior graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, staff members, or senior ranking faculty who meet the criteria of an emerging engineering education scholar (see website below for details). Each award will include: 1) connection with a mentor who is a senior scholar in the engineering education community at the ASEE conference 2) support for conference travel expenses (exact level of financial support is still under consideration, but will not exceed $500). AFG recipients are expected to attend the full duration of the annual ASEE conference, including conference sessions in the ERM division, the ERM “Brouhaha” dinner (ticket included), and a meet-and-greet with the other AFG recipients and mentors. We also highly encourage AFG recipients to attend at least one workshop.

- NAE ANNOUNCEMENT: New Report on Teaching Engineering in K-12
A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine says there is a growing mismatch between the need for engineering-literate K-12 educators and the capacity of the U.S. education system to prepare and support these professionals. In addition, there are very few postsecondary programs that educate prospective K-12 teachers of engineering, and professional development experiences — through which the bulk of the current teaching workforce learned what they know about engineering and how to teach it — vary in duration, scope, and effectiveness. The report also finds there is little evidence that K-12 science teachers are being given opportunities to learn to incorporate engineering concepts and practices in their instruction, as described in NGSS.
The report includes 10 recommendations for improving the preparation of K-12 teachers of engineering geared toward a range of stakeholders, from federal agencies and private foundations with an interest in STEM education to colleges, accrediting bodies, and state departments of education.
In addition, to address lack of diversity, the report recommends programs that prepare prospective K-12 teachers of engineering make greater efforts to recruit and retain teacher candidates from populations currently underrepresented in STEM education and careers. A more diverse workforce that is encouraged to use inclusive pedagogies could help attract and retain a more diverse population of students interested in the study of engineering and in STEM-related careers, the report says.

- CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Workshop on Sharing Exemplary Admissions Practices that Promote Diversity in Engineering
The National Academy of Engineering (NAE), with support from the National Science Foundation (EEC- 1840746), invites applications to attend a workshop on Sharing Exemplary Admissions Practices that Promote Diversity in Engineering that will be held Sunday, June 7 to Tuesday, June 9, in Irvine, CA.
This workshop is designed to build a cohort of faculty, administrators, and scholars representing institutions across the country who can support one another as they work toward improving the diversity of engineering programs at their own institutions. Workshop activities will encourage cross-institutional mentoring, networking, and collaboration among individuals. It will be highly interactive and will include presentations about best practices and policies, discussions of current and future directions for research on both the predictive value of different admissions criteria and metrics for judging success, and informal and formal networking opportunities. Workshop applications are due Friday, February 28. Applicants will be notified of their status by Friday, March 27.

- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Presenters for ASEE Special Session – Research on Engineering Practice: Catalyzing the Next Generation of Scholars
The organizing team for the NSF sponsored “Research on Engineering Practice: Catalyzing a Scholarly Community” collaborative conference grant (EEC – 18833055, 1833113, 1833124, 1854814) invites early career scholars who conduct research on engineering practice and / or its connections to engineering education to apply to present in an ASEE Special Session.
The special session will take place during the 2020 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference on Monday, June 22, 2020, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Each selected early career scholar will present as a panelist, giving a brief, 5-minute lightning talk to introduce themselves and their work to a growing scholarly community focused on research on engineering practice. The scholars will then display a poster about a project and their broader research and career interests related to engineering practice, for feedback, ideas, and support from session attendees.
PhD students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career research scientists or faculty members who conducted research on engineering practice and / or its connections to engineering education are encouraged to apply. A travel stipend of $700 will be offered to each selected panelist. Up to 6 panelists will be selected.
Applicants should submit:
- A brief statement (1 page max.) about a project the applicant is currently undertaking or has recently completed related to engineering practice and / or its connections to engineering education. (This can be a project conducted individually or in collaboration with others.)
- A brief statement (1 page max.) on the applicant’s general research and career interests related to engineering practice and how the applicant’s participation in this panel session has potential to advance their interests.
- A 2-page version of the applicant’s resume or curriculum vitae (please include a listing of your papers or posters that have been accepted for the 2020 ASEE Annual Conference).

- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: First Year Engineering Experience Conference
The First Year Programs Division of ASEE is accepting paper abstracts and workshop proposals to be presented at the 12th Annual First Year Engineering Experience (FYEE) Conference. The FYEE conference will be held July 26-28, 2020 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. This year’s conference will focus on connecting the first-year engineering classroom with first-year engineering initiatives and programs beyond the classroom.
Paper Abstracts and Workshop Proposals are due February 24, 2020. Draft papers are due April 20 with final papers due June 1. - CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: PEER Collaborative and Unconference Registration Announcement
Are you a faculty member (pre-tenure, tenured or mid-career faculty) or research staff who is primarily evaluated on your engineering education research? If so, the PEER Collaborative and unconference may be for you. PEER is a small and growing community of active participants and alumni whose primary role in higher education derive from engineering education scholarship. The Collaborative engages in peer mentoring and support in engineering education scholarship related matters within a community of similarly situated people.
While interactions among PEER Collaborative members occur throughout the year, our main point of interaction is a dinner and unconference immediately following the ASEE 2020 Annual Conference. The unconference is free to participate; the only costs are your own meals and lodging. - CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Engineering Community Engagement and Service-Learning Workshop
A new and exciting event is planned to bring faculty, professionals, researchers, students community members and others interested in engineering-based community-engagement and service-learning together to discuss the state of the art, best practices, challenges and opportunities to enhance learning and make a difference in the world. Engineering, technology and computing have enormous opportunities to impact our world. Community-engaged learning is a proven pedagogy that has made significant impacts in engineering and the STEM disciplines and has tremendous opportunities to address many of the challenges that educators face to enhance learning, prepare students for today’s global workplace and increase diversity. This interactive workshop/conference is designed to promote discussion and interactions between participants to exchange ideas, share research findings and explore opportunities. There are three ways to participate by submitting a full paper, abstract and poster or as a participant. - CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: 4th Dissertation Institute for underrepresented graduate students in engineering
The 4th Dissertation Institute (DI), an interactive workshop for underrepresented (African American, Native American, Pacific Island and Hispanic American) graduate students in engineering. The 2020 DI will take place June 7th – 12th on the University of Michigan campus. The Institute is funded by the National Science Foundation and hosted by University of Texas, Dallas and Virginia Tech. The primary goal is to address issues that prolong completion times for those at the dissertation proposal preparation and dissertation completion stages of the targeted population.
The week-long event will focus on skills and strategies needed to successfully complete the dissertation process as well as provide networking opportunities to build connections for future collaborative career advancement. Institute participants will build new writing habits, work on their dissertation or dissertation proposal, and learn skills that will help them continue making progress when they return to their institutions. Participants will be housed in a private room; will share a bathroom with one other participant; receive meals; and be reimbursed for travel costs up to $500. As a part of the application process, participants will be asked to identify barriers that have impeded their progress to completing their dissertation and to provide suggestions for additional topics to be presented.

Position Description
The University of Rochester’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) seeks an Assistant Director of Educational Development to serve as the primary support to faculty and departments in learning and applying evidence-based instructional practices. Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Executive Director of CETL and working closely with CETL’s Faculty Director, the Assistant Director will conceptualize, plan, execute, and evaluate evidence-based instructional development programming responsive to individual faculty members, academic departments, graduate student teaching assistants and instructors, and institutional initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree and one year of experience in instructional development or teaching and learning support. Strong project management skills, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple complex projects, coordinate with partners, and initiate and execute appropriate timelines. Ability to establish strong working partnerships with diverse faculty, staff, and students and with institutional units such as academic departments. Ability to collect, manage, and analyze confidential internal data, external benchmarking, and published research to design, implement, and evaluate programming and outreach initiatives that proactively advance evidence-based, high-quality instructional practice in AS&E.
Preferred Qualifications
Two to five years’ experience in designing and delivering instructional development programming, preferably in a research university setting. Ph.D. or Ed.D. Experience working with STEM faculty, working in a STEM field, or other STEM background.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Buffalo
The Department of Engineering Education (DEE), in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences invites candidates to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. A successful candidate for this position requires qualitative research knowledge, excellent writing skills, taking initiative, proven experience collaborating across disciplines, and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. This post-doc position will focus on undergraduate engineering education, specifically improving learning in core technical (engineering science) courses. This is a non-tenure track position and is part of the MSU Engineering on the Coast (EoC) program, which is housed at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) in Gautier, MS. Students enrolled in this program typically first complete two years at MGCCC, then enroll in two additional years of courses offered by MSU EoC instructors to receiver their degree. Most EoC courses are offered in the afternoon or in the evening, to accommodate the many non-traditional students enrolled in the program.

The Director for Educational Outreach and Student Programs is responsible for planning and directing the Bagley College of Engineering programs and activities designed to foster interaction with the Pre K-12 educational system. Program activities are focused on increasing the awareness and understanding of careers in engineering, mathematics, and science of students, parents, teachers, counselors, and other school administrators.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate at Mississippi State University
Apply for a full-time postdoctoral position and join a team of education, engineering, and meteorology faculty to explore integrating computational science practice, weather data analysis, and 3D visualization in the secondary Earth and Environmental Science curriculum. The planned project will use a design-based research approach to test the hypothesis that science education empowered by large-scale atmospheric datasets and fused with computational thinking and practices will: 1) promote meaningful science learning as envisioned by the Next Generation Science Standards, and 2) foster literacy in atmospheric and computational sciences among middle and high school students. Anticipated start date is Spring or Summer 2020.
