5. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Lecturer (temporary faculty) for the Environmental Resources Engineering Department at Humboldt State University

The Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) Department at Humboldt State University (HSU) is seeking candidates to fill a non-tenure track lecturer (temporary faculty) position to teach introduction to environmental engineering, probability and statistics and life cycle assessment. The teaching assignment could be flexible to best fit the final candidate’s academic strengths. This is an academic year position that could be extended up to three years. In addition, our department anticipates a tenure track position in the near future, and an excellent temporary faculty member would be very competitive for our tenure track position. Humboldt State University is the most northern campus of the California State University System and is primarily a teaching institution. The PEER Collaborative is a growing community of people in a similar situation who engage in near-peer mentoring about engineering education research topics.

The 2019 PEER Collaborative Unconference is scheduled in parallel with the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition in Tampa, FL on Thursday, June 20. This free event, uses informal “sessions” to address topics agreed on by participants. Examples of past “sessions” include mentoring graduate students, applying for external funding, building collaborations, and other topics. Specific locations and times are still TBD. 3. ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: ERM Division Faculty Showcase

ERM has always been diverse community with a variety of research interests and goals. As a division, we have worked over 40 years to improve engineering education by disseminating knowledge of learning and teaching, encouraging efforts to improve instruction, and enhancing the status of university teaching. Underneath these goals, we believe the people in and around the community have been the most important part of making ERM what it is. As such, we believe we should share more of our community with the outside world.

What we are looking for: We are seeking faculty and research groups who wish to contribute small, unedited, 60-second videos to a community of practice. These videos will be edited, displayed, and shared, within the ERM community and beyond on a future Youtube page or other medium. This opportunity to share is open to any ERM member, in any faculty or staff position, who wish to share innovative research methods and teaching practices they use related to engineering education.

Instructions: First, create your video! Videos should be brief and no more than 60 seconds; contain no background music, transitions, or overlaid text; be stable (not shaky); and be of medium to high-quality in resolution and audio quality (a video camera is preferred but a newer phone or laptop camera will work just fine). Tell us a bit about yourself, your research group (optional) and what you do. Along with your video, please provide the following information: name(s) of those in the video, email address, social media handles (optional), academic or professional affiliations/positions, and a short bio of yourself that describes you and your research. Then, share video clip(s) and other requested information with ERM Director-at-Large’s Justin Major (major5@purdue.edu) and Cory Brozina (scbrozina@ysu.edu) by no later than March 18th. Videos that are too large to email can be uploaded and shared from from cloud-based platforms such as Google Drive or Dropbox, or sent by physical mail (email for the address). We are seeking volunteers to review applications for this year’s ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) program. The commitment requires reviewing 3 application packages, which will take approximately 30 minutes each. You will be provided specific review criteria and your responses will be collected online. 4. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: University of Portland, Innovation Professor of Practice

As the University of Portland (UP) strives to integrate innovation across campus, we seek an Innovation Professor of Practice to develop, lead, and teach in a new university-wide undergraduate Innovation (INV) minor beginning August 2019. This is a full-time, 9-month (August-May) position. The INV minor includes the following four courses that are all new for the University: Introduction to Design and Innovation; Empathy, Observational Research, and Human-Centered Design; Making: Sketching and Prototyping; and Collaborative Innovation Practicum. This position will direct the program and envision the minor as a catalyst for campus innovation. They are a builder, collaborator, and innovator who actively contributes to the academic community as they lead cross-disciplinary efforts with students, staff, and faculty. The UC Irvine Teaching and Learning Research Center (TLRC) and Education Research Initiative (ERI) are looking for a joint Postdoctoral Scholar to carry out discipline-based educational research (DBER) with a variety of UCI faculty studying teaching and learning in higher education. This is a two-year position with a proposed start date of July 1, 2019 (negotiable).

The University of California, Irvine has a vibrant and collaborative community of discipline-based education researchers, and STEM educators striving to provide our highly diverse student population with a premier learning experience. The TLRC is housed within the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) and provides assistance to faculty interested in conducting research on their teaching. ERI is a newly funded initiative bringing together researchers across the campus interested in conducting education research and implementing this research into practice. Florida International University (FIU) invites applications and nominations for Senior Faculty positions and the position of Founding Director of the newly formed school dedicated to computer science and engineering education. This new unit (https://succeed.fiu.edu), which is part of FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing, adapts the engineering education research model established at other universities and is the first engineering education department/school at a minority-serving institution. The NYU Tandon School of Engineering (TSoE) MakerSpace is seeking a MakerSpace Design Specialist to support and develop project-based learning opportunities. NYU-TSoE is planning to enhance the experiential learning component across all disciplines of engineering and the MakerSpace is expected to play a pivotal role in realizing these opportunities. This position will report to the Manager and assist in growth of design thinking and design process learning. More recently, the program has expanded to include on-line offerings of the undergraduate engineering leadership courses, a Master of Engineering in Engineering Leadership and Innovation Management (ELIM), and residential and on-line graduate certificate and minor in ELIM. Elements of the ELIM graduate program will be extended to a proposed on-line Doctor of Engineering degree incorporating both technical courses and applied research, as well as professional skills development.

The successful candidate should exhibit a drive to develop the next generation of engineering leaders, develop innovative educational programs, a willingness to critically examine programs, and to develop collaborations with companies and organizations that hire our students. The Director is expected to work with the College’s development office to secure funding sources to expand the impact of the program beyond its current scope. The Director will lead a team of two Associate Directors, an Assistant Research Professor, a full-time and several part-time instructors, and an Administrative Assistant. Additional faculty may be added as the program continues to grow. The Director is expected to establish a strong record of research and engaged scholarship as well as teach and advise students. The candidate should have a minimum of ten years of successful management experience within an engineering organization, proven experience in teaching engineering or leadership topics at the university level or equivalent, and trained in or qualified to train personal development topics such as effective writing and presentations, assessment, engineering design, and critical analysis. In addition, candidates should possess superior communication skills and have demonstrated experience in engaging students in curricular and co-curricular activities and in seeking and securing external funding. A proven record of directing and publishing high impact research is also desired. A team of researchers led by Dr. Shane Brown at Oregon State University is seeking to better understand the ways in which course context impacts student’s cognitive engagement. The title of the study is Influence of Classroom Context on Student Cognitive Engagement Collaborative Research. We have a survey instrument to address both in-class and out-of-class engagement of students in about 30 questions. The survey should only take about 10 minutes to complete. We intend to correlate the results of this survey with a survey you (the instructor) would complete. By you providing us information on the opportunities you generate for your students to engage, and students providing us information on the way they choose to engage, we can better understand the influence instructors have on their students’ engagement.
