I would usually include this announcement in an upcoming newsletter, but since the next ERM newsletter is not scheduled until May 15, I’m sending it now. This sounds like a great opportunity to learn and network as we work remotely!

Please join the an Engineering Education Research Big Meet Up, online throughout the day of May 14th. The event is being organized by Professor John Mitchell, Vice Dean Education and Co-Director of the Centre for Engineering Education at University College London (UCL) and co-sponsored by REEN, Va. Tech, Purdue, UTM (Malaysia), UWA (Perth), TU Dublin and Aalborg.

ERM Announcements, May 1, 2020

Happy May Day! May has always been my favorite month of the year for several reasons. The academic year at Penn State is slowing drawing to a close. The weather is starting to get nicer and there are flowers blooming everywhere! I was looking out my window today and happened to see a lot of robins and squirrels outside, which reminded me that life continues to move on, despite the current state of affairs in the country and around the world. Even though we will be missing many of our usual milestones, celebrations, and events, we can still rejoice in the little things like sunshine, flowers, and online shopping deliveries.

Speaking of celebrations, I wanted to give a shout out to the 2020 ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) winners, who I have listed below:

General Announcements

ERM ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for Nominations for ERM Directors and Secretary/Treasurer
The Education Research and Methods Division Bylaws state that in even-numbered years, the membership shall elect two Directors and a secretary/treasurer. As such, the nominating committee is opening nominations from April 15 through May 15, 2020. Below are descriptions of the positions open for nominations. All that is required are name, affiliation, and email via email to Nicole Pitterson – npitters@vt.edu during the nomination period. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Directors: Directors shall be elected to serve a two-year term and shall not be eligible to serve a second successive term. Two directors shall be elected each year. Directors may be asked to serve in a capacity as determined by the Chair.

Secretary/Treasurer: The Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected in even-numbered years to serve a two-year term. The Secretary-Treasurer shall be responsible for the minutes of the meetings of the Executive Board, Executive Committee and the annual business meeting of the Division and shall maintain the financial accounts and records of the Division in coordination with the Society Headquarters staff. The Secretary-Treasurer shall make a written financial report at each meeting of the Executive Board.

Elections are scheduled to be held May 16 – June 1, 2020. Details on how to vote in elections will follow at a later date.

 

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Research Study on the Impact of Covid-19 on Policies and Practices of Engineering Programs
The rapid spread of COVID-19 has required universities across the country to make dramatic changes, the most visible of which is moving instruction online. We do not know about the additional changes that universities and engineering programs, in particular, are making to support students and to comply with ‘stay-at-home’ orders and respect social-distancing, or to plan for summer and fall courses and activities. The purpose of the study is to identify how COVID-19 has affected student-related practices and policies in engineering programs across the U.S. Policies and practices of interest include but are not limited to those related to admissions, enrollment, advising, course prerequisites, course delivery, and internships.

The findings from this study will inform the fields of higher education and engineering education by summarizing how universities and engineering programs are responding to COVID-19. Findings will be able to inform future decision-making by sharing changes to practice and policy and will inform future research by creating a baseline understanding of changes universities and engineering programs are making.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Brief Survey on Rapid Transition to Online Teaching
As we are at a unique time in higher education, we are hoping to capture this experience in a research study. We are asking individuals in the engineering community who are experiencing a transition to online teaching to participate in an online survey and answer a short prompt. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Answers will remain completely confidential and be deidentified prior to dissemination.

CALL FOR REVIEWERS: Reviewers needed for WEEF & EDC2020 Conferences
IFEES hosts the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) annually, a conference focused on bringing together the global community to build excellence in engineering education. The Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) meets in parallel to this event every two years. This year, WEEF&GEDC will be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa from 16–20 November 2020 (https://weefgedc2020.org). We would like to invite you to review abstracts and papers for WEEF&GEDC2020. Your contribution as a reviewer will help to develop the scholarship of engineering education, and ensure the high standards of the conference. Conference participants and authors are encouraged to review papers. All reviews will be double-blind, and we will ensure that you are not assigned a review with which you have a conflict of interest.

A focus for this event is building scholarship in engineering education amongst the global community. As such, we encourage people who are new to engineering education research and scholarship to review abstracts and papers. We have developed guidance to help you conduct effective reviews, which can be found here:

The abstract submission deadline for authors is 4 May 2020, and reviews should be completed by 25 May 2020. CALL FOR PAPERS: A Special Issue on “Asset-Based Pre-College Engineering Education to Promote Equity’’
The Journal of Pre-college Engineering Education Research (J-PEER) invites original manuscript submissions that investigate the design, learning and social processes, and outcomes of asset-based engineering education. Extended Abstracts: Structured 500-word abstracts will be accepted on a rolling basis through May 30, 2020. Abstracts should include the following sections: Purpose, Background/ Framework, Methods, Findings, and Conclusions.

Position Announcements

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Engineering Education Postdoctoral Fellow Department of Engineering, Wake Forest University
The Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University in collaboration with the Program for Leadership and Character seek a creative and dynamic scholar with a research background in engineering, engineering education, assessment and measurement, learning sciences, psychology, STEM education, or other related fields to serve as a Postdoctoral Fellow. The two-year position is funded by a grant from the Kern Family Foundation to support the development and assessment of character interventions in the context of the undergraduate engineering program and in the context of entrepreneurial mindset. The successful candidate will collaborate directly with engineering faculty, an character education postdoctoral fellow, graduate student research assistants to design and coordinate character interventions, assist with course development workshops, conduct empirical studies and prepare manuscripts for publication to study the efficacy of these pedagogical interventions. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, assessment and measurement, learning sciences, psychology, STEM education, or other related fields. We are seeking colleagues who share our vision, who embody the same attributes we desire in our students, and who want to contribute to an educational environment that emphasizes excellence in engineering, entrepreneurial mindset, creative design and problem solving, and broad societal impact.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
The Department of Communication and Learning in Science at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, announces a call for a postdoctoral position. The position is fully funded for 24 months, starting in October 2020 (or another date agreed with the applicant). This is an open call for a postdoctoral project focusing on any topic bridging at least two (ideally more) of the following broader areas of research with a higher education focus:

• teaching and learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education
