- NSF UPDATES: Updates from the NSF EEC Engineering Education Program Cluster
In its effort to serve the engineering education research community, the EEC (Engineering Education and Centers) division of the National Science Foundation, through its engineering education research cluster (RFE, RIEF, RED, and CAREER programs) offers a number of opportunities to learn about proposal submission, current funding opportunities, post-award management, and other matters of concern to the research community. This message summarizes some of these opportunities:
Regular “office hours”: starting October 15, 2024, program officer Alice Pawley will host virtual office hours most Tuesdays from 3-4 pm ET. Our vision is to convene a diverse assembly of fifty to seventy-five engineers, designers, and educators with a shared goal of exploring and advancing the integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in engineering design education.
Our mission is to delineate and disseminate the best practices, opportunities, and challenges associated with the integration of AI in cooperative partnerships and the expansion of design perspectives within engineering design education. We will explore and articulate how educators, students, courses, and curricula can be strategically developed and positioned to harness AI technologies in service of fostering robust partnerships and enhancing the design education landscape. Our discussions and explorations will encompass a wide array of AI-related topics.
Sessions will feature short panel statements followed by open discussions. Participants are encouraged to refine their ideas for publication in the International Journal of Engineering Education.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Professor – Robotics, Tufts University Mechanical Engineering
Tufts University Department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a faculty member at the Assistant Professor level in robotics. Research thrusts may span the broad field of robotics, but preferably with an emphasis on the interface between artificial intelligence and mechanical systems, for applications including human-robot interaction, vehicle automation, mechanism design, biomimetics, soft robotics, or micro-robotics. The candidate should be capable of teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to current curricula and new research directions.
The successful candidate will join an active department that offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate courses. Experience in robotics and a doctorate in engineering or a related field are required.

The Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education within the College of Engineering, is excited to announce our search for a postdoctoral scholar. The Leonhard Center is an endowed Center that forms partnerships with engineering faculty and programs in designing, implementing, and evaluating research-based innovations in undergraduate and graduate engineering education. In addition, the Leonhard Center initiates and evaluates College-wide projects in support of the College’s strategic goals. The Leonhard Center also provides workshops and summer academies for faculty on a wide range of topics from creativity and innovation to engineering communication. The Leonhard Center is seeking a Post-doctoral Scholar to take a leadership role for several Center projects related to educational innovation, collaborating with faculty to design and evaluate projects in engineering education, evaluating College-level educational initiatives, and supporting faculty development efforts by offering college-wide workshops on evidence-based instructional practices and educational research or coordinating/leading Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs). Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Engineering Education (EngE) at Virginia Tech. EngE (www.enge.vt.edu) is home to an outstanding first-year engineering program, a growing suite of interdisciplinary and experiential learning offerings, and a premier PhD program in engineering education. The department has a total of 16 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 13 instructional faculty, 10 academic advisors, 5 research faculty and postdocs, and 7 business and operations administrative/professional faculty and staff members. It serves approximately 3000 first-year and continuing students in its General Engineering program, a growing number of students engaged in interdisciplinary experiences and undergraduate research, and 50 graduate students in its doctoral program. EngE faculty collaborate nationally and internationally on large-scale, interdisciplinary extramurally funded research spanning areas such as teaching & learning, organizations & systems, ethics & social responsibility, and equity & culture (https://enge.vt.edu/researchfacilties.html).
Candidates for the position should be prepared to lead the department’s efforts in research, education, mentoring, service, and outreach, and contribute to further advancing the collaborative culture of the department. The Department Head will serve as an integral member of the College of Engineering leadership team, serving as the department’s advocate to college and university administration and external stakeholders, and representative for the department at venues such as national and international meetings and conferences. This position has significant supervisory and management responsibilities, including substantive oversight over the department budget, an expectation to grow internal and external partnerships, including philanthropic opportunities, and positioning the department to align with college and university strategic plans. Candidates should have professional achievements commensurate with appointment at the rank of Full Professor with Tenure in Engineering Education. Although predominantly an administrative and leadership position, the EngE Department Head is expected to engage with the engineering education discipline by supporting the department’s activities in teaching, research, and/or professional service.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a doctorate in engineering, engineering education, or a related field and must qualify at the time of appointment for tenure at the rank of full professor in engineering education. In addition, candidates should have: demonstrated intellectual leadership and administrative skills in an academic/university environment or equivalent; a clear vision for the future of the department and field of engineering education; ability to communicate effectively to a range of stakeholders; dedication to the instructional mission of the university; interest in the development and expansion of sponsored research programs; an established record of professional activities and leadership in professional organizations; and experience in enhancing the representation and success of underrepresented populations.

Our vision is to convene a diverse assembly of fifty to seventy-five engineers, designers, and educators with a shared goal of exploring and advancing the integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in engineering design education.
Our mission is to delineate and disseminate the best practices, opportunities, and challenges associated with the integration of AI in cooperative partnerships and the expansion of design perspectives within engineering design education. We will explore and articulate how educators, students, courses, and curricula can be strategically developed and positioned to harness AI technologies in service of fostering robust partnerships and enhancing the design education landscape. Our discussions and explorations will encompass a wide array of AI-related topics.
Sessions will feature short panel statements followed by open discussions. Participants are encouraged to refine their ideas for publication in the International Journal of Engineering Education.

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Engineering Education (EngE) at Virginia Tech. EngE (www.enge.vt.edu) is home to an outstanding first-year engineering program, a growing suite of interdisciplinary and experiential learning offerings, and a premier PhD program in engineering education. The department has a total of 16 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 13 instructional faculty, 10 academic advisors, 5 research faculty and postdocs, and 7 business and operations administrative/professional faculty and staff members. It serves approximately 3000 first-year and continuing students in its General Engineering program, a growing number of students engaged in interdisciplinary experiences and undergraduate research, and 50 graduate students in its doctoral program. EngE faculty collaborate nationally and internationally on large-scale, interdisciplinary extramurally funded research spanning areas such as teaching & learning, organizations & systems, ethics & social responsibility, and equity & culture (https://enge.vt.edu/researchfacilties.html).
Candidates for the position should be prepared to lead the department’s efforts in research, education, mentoring, service, and outreach, and contribute to further advancing the collaborative culture of the department. The Department Head will serve as an integral member of the College of Engineering leadership team, serving as the department’s advocate to college and university administration and external stakeholders, and representative for the department at venues such as national and international meetings and conferences. This position has significant supervisory and management responsibilities, including substantive oversight over the department budget, an expectation to grow internal and external partnerships, including philanthropic opportunities, and positioning the department to align with college and university strategic plans.
