  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Upcoming National Effective Teaching Institute offerings (NETI-1 and NETI-2)

 

Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will lead the long-standing foundational NETI-1 workshop, which has been offered since 1991. The more advanced NETI-2 workshop will also be offered. Previous NETI programs have reached over 2800 participants from more than 365 different schools. Our past participant evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive.

 

NETI-1, Course Design and Student Engagement, will be offered July 26-28, 2023, at Purdue University. The workshop features material for relatively new faculty members and other material designed to equip experienced faculty members to become teaching leaders and mentors on their campuses. Participants will include up to 50 faculty members from all branches of engineering, engineering technology, and other STEM areas. The registration fee is $1275 per participant, which covers organization and presentation costs, participant notebooks, lunches, and breaks. Participants also receive a copy of Felder & Brent’s Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide and the option of touring the School of Engineering Education’s facilities. There is a discount for bringing larger teams from the same institution. Travel expenses, including breakfasts and dinners, are not included. NETI-2, Student Teams and Advanced Student Engagement, will be offered August 7-8, 2023, at University of San Diego. This workshop is intended to build on the skills acquired in NETI-1 by introducing more advanced instructional strategies. Applicants are not limited to those who have taken NETI-1, but should understand that content in order to fully engage in this workshop. Participants will include up to 50 faculty members from all branches of engineering, engineering technology, and other STEM areas. NETI-2 registration is $1100 through May 1; after May 1, the fee increases to $1200 per participant.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Upcoming Teaching Workshop:  How to Engineer Engineering Education

 

Dr. Michael Prince and a team of collaborators will offer the long-standing teaching workshop, “How to Engineer Engineering Education”, at Bucknell University from July 12-14, 2023.  The workshop is designed to introduce both new and more experienced instructors to practical instructional design for STEM faculty.  The program prepares instructors to adopt research-based practices that increase student engagement and learning.  This workshop has been offered for over 20 years and has received overwhelming positive reviews.  The registration fee is $850 per participant, which covers workshop attendance, participant notebooks, meals and refreshment breaks.   1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Final Call for Participation: Seeking Recent or Upcoming Engineering and Engineering Education PhD Graduates with Positive Mentoring Experiences

 

To help better understand and support women doctoral candidates in engineering disciplines, we are looking for research participants and their mentors for our study.

Specifically, we are looking to interview individuals who identify as women and have completed (or are about to complete) a doctoral dissertation in an engineering discipline about their mentoring experiences and strategies that helped them navigate their pathway through graduate school. Each interview participant will receive a $25 Amazon e-gift card for their time. The full details of this IRB-approved study are on the informed consent page on the first page of the interest survey below.

  1. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Call for 2025/2026 Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES) Hosts

We invite institutions to submit an expression of interest for hosting the Research in Engineering Education Symposium 2025/2026 by 15 July 2023.

 

The Research in Engineering Education Network (REEN) is responsible for the biennial Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES), aimed at facilitating the dissemination of research and best practices throughout the global Engineering Education Research community. More details about REES and the REEN Governing Board may be found at our website. Our next REES will be in India in January 2024. Previous events have been held in Hawaii (USA), Davos (Switzerland, 2008), Palm Cove (Australia, 2009), Madrid (Spain, 2011), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, 2013), Dublin (Ireland, 2015), Bogota (Columbia, 2017), Cape Town (South Africa, 2019) and Perth (Australia, 2021), the last of which was our first hybrid event.

This call is for the REES that will be held in 2025 or 2026 depending on the time of year that suits the chosen destination. We invite interested institutions to submit an Expression of Interest (see below) to host this conference. Interested institutions will then be contacted for further discussions and if suitable, asked to submit a detailed application. Please refer to the Guidelines and General Requirements for potential hosts at the end of this document when preparing the expression of interest.

The Expression of Interest, to be submitted via email by 15 July 2023 should include:

  • The proposed host institution’s name and location
  • Proposed dates for REES
  • Expression of commitment to, and experience in engineering education research, including why the institution would like to host the conference
  • Contact person for further discussions
  • Any innovations or special features proposed for the conference (if applicable)
  • An indication of the level of support from academia, industry, professional, and communityorganizations
  • Details of the proposed venue if available
  • Any additional information that the proposed host believes will support their expression of interest.

The closing date for expressions of interest is: 15 July 2023. Once the closing date has passed, we will contact shortlisted hosts with the next steps.

  1. NEW OPPORTUNITY: NSF Ideas Lab for Personalized Learning in Engineering Education

The Directorate for Engineering at the National Science Foundation announced plans to employ an Ideas Lab to stimulate interdisciplinary research into emerging technologies for Personalized Learning in Engineering Education  https://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=307280&org=EFMA We anticipate bringing together expertise in engineering education, learning science, sensing, machine learning, and neuroscience.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Lecturer in Engineering Fundamentals, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

 

We are looking for a passionate educational innovator to join our Engineering Fundamentals team in Fall 2023 in the Tickle College of Engineering! If you have a passion for first year engineering education and innovative pedagogical techniques, please consider applying to our Lecturer position.

This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 9-month appointment. Candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate in engineering or computer science with an undergraduate degree in any engineering or computer science field at time of appointment; strongly preferred are candidates with a doctorate in electrical, computer engineering, computer science, or engineering education.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in Engineering Education at University at Buffalo

 

The Department of Engineering Education (DEE), in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences invites candidates to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. The successful candidate will work as a postdoctoral scholar with Dr. Corey Schimpf, collaborating on and taking the lead on research themes around:

  1. Analyzing how expertise develops in engineering design across the continuum from novice pre-college students to practicing engineers;
  2. Advancing engineering design research by integrating new theoretical or analytical frameworks (e.g., from data science or complexity science); and
  3. Conducting design-based research to develop scaffolding tools for supporting the learning of complex skills like design.

Specific projects the successful candidate will have an opportunity to work on include studying front-end design skill development in middle and high school students undertaking Earth science and community oriented design projects, exploring how elementary students learn engineering design, collaboration and socio-emotional learning skills through an augmented reality game and creating new ways to scaffold their learning, and investigating how increased agency and power or influence in projects affects more senior engineering undergraduates development.

The successful candidate will support ongoing research endeavors in the described areas through:

  • Execution and/or supervision of data collection, quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and scholarly writing and dissemination.
  • Coordinating and/or supervising research, curriculum development and professional development efforts
  • Development of data collection instruments
  • Submission of research protocols for ethics review
  • Mentoring graduate and/or undergraduate students

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering Education, Science Education, Education, Design, or related field
  • Experience with researching or teaching engineering design at any level
  • Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, provide leadership to an interdisciplinary team and understand different perspectives of stakeholders
  • Ability to work on campus

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience researching or teaching engineering design and/or earth science in K-12 settings
  • Experience with R, Python or other environments for data science research methods

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Researcher Position Available in STEM Education at Cal State LA

 

Cal State LA’s NSF-funded Eco-STEM project seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in Engineering Education to support Eco-STEM’s research-based work to transform STEM education using an asset-based ecosystem model. Specifically, the Eco-STEM project focuses on shifting the metaphor in STEM education by using the ecosystem as a philosophical guide to promoting an organic and healthy environment that nurtures students, faculty, and staff to become individuals fulfilled professionally and personally. We are looking for a positive, adventurous, and open-minded candidate to work on this transformative, high-impact project. The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. Postdoctoral researcher responsibilities will include:

  • Work with the Eco-STEM team on the development and implementation of the Action Research Teaching Fellows Faculty Learning Community and the Department Chairs Learning Community, which focus on changing the mental models and promotes the transformations aimed by the project.
  • Work on the institutionalization of equitable and student-focused faculty development practices and procedures at Cal State LA.
  • Collaborate closely with the project team to design survey instruments, administer surveys, and clean and analyze data, utilizing a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  • Oversee communication and collaboration with survey administration sites so that data collection, analysis, IRB, etc. are set in place and research efforts are conducted both ethically and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with project team members to disseminate findings through peer-reviewed presentations, journal articles, and conference proceedings, as well as academic and practitioner conferences.

An earned doctorate in Engineering Education, Education, Social Sciences, Engineering or Computer Science or related field, from an accredited institution (or equivalent), is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may also be considered. For an appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of the appointment. We also require evidence of research experience in engineering or STEM education at the post-secondary level and evidence of relevant scholarly publications in Engineering Education or related fields.
