Dear ERM members,
It’s one of my favorite and most dreaded times of the year—back to school. I love the energy and excitement of a new academic year. There’s so much possibility. Campus is starting to bustle again, and the students are coming back. And yet, this period marks the end of my unstructured days (where I always plan for more than I can accomplish), but I also don’t have a packed schedule of meetings. And, this academic year also has continued uncertainty and challenges that have not disappeared with the start of a new term.
Over the past week, I’ve been thinking a lot about gratitude. Much of this reflection has been prompted by a research project in which a recent graduate, Dr. Julianna Gesun, has been investigating this concept related to engineering thriving. The formal definition of gratitude that we’ve been using is “feelings of appreciation for someone else in response to receiving benefits that were intentionally provided, especially at some cost to the benefactor.” In this framing, I am grateful for this community that has worked to be connected while making major educational lifts over the past year and a half. I am grateful for the individuals who have volunteered to serve in leadership positions in ERM. I am grateful for those who mentor others—I have benefitted from your time and wisdom. I am grateful for the willingness of this community to ask challenging questions and engaged in difficult conversations.
My hope is that a grateful outlook can reshape my orientation to a time that could feel overwhelming, discouraging, or frustrating. Holding on to these bigger benefits is making my start to this year more hopeful than a focus on my ever growing to-do list and circumstances. I’m wishing you a great start to your terms!

1. CALL FOR RESEARCH PARTICIPATION: Dissertation: Graduate Student Professional Development and Teaching Self-efficacy: A Mixed Methods Study
I, Jutshi Agarwal, doctoral candidate with the Department of Engineering Education at University of Cincinnati, am seeking fellow engineering graduate student participation in my dissertation research on the teaching preparation of future engineering faculty. Participation involves a 15-minute survey on how confident engineering graduate students are in their abilities to teach undergraduate/graduate courses. Graduate students do not need to be involved in any teaching activity to respond to this survey. The study also involves an optional second stage of online interviews(recorded). You will be given the option at the end of the survey as to whether you wish to participate in the second stage. If you consent to the interview, you will be asked to provide your contact details so I can reach out to you for that part. You do NOT need to consent to the interview to participate in the survey.

2. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: JEE Mentored Reviewer Program
The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE) is committed to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education. To expand our reviewer base and maintain the quality of manuscript reviews, JEE launched a Mentored Reviewer Program in 2019. This program is intended to coach new or novice reviewers through the review process with mentor who has substantial experience in reviewing and writing engineering education research studies. We are inviting applications for mentees to the JEE Mentored Reviewer Program. Mentees for the program should be novices in engineering education research such as graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and engineering faculty. Mentees should display evidence of developing expertise (through formal courses or real-world experiences) in research areas that align with the journal’s mission. Mentees should have developing expertise in either quantitative or qualitative research methods. Individuals from countries other than the United States are welcome and encouraged to apply.
The Mentored Reviewer Program is a competitive program for both mentors and mentees. All mentors and mentees will be acknowledged at the ASEE annual meeting and will receive a certificate recognizing their accomplishments through their participation in the program during the previous year. Mentees will be asked to participate in an online training with their mentors and JEE editors that will include an introduction to JEE and an overview of expectations for reviews. During the mentorship period (approximately 3 – 6 months), mentors and mentees will work together on approximately three article reviews. A scaffolded approach to the review process allows each mentee to gain more independence by their final review. To the extent possible, mentors and mentees will be matched based on expertise. 1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Science and Engineering Education Fellow in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University
The Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University is seeking applications for a Science and Engineering Education Fellow (SEEF) in Mechanical Engineering (ME) to (a) support committed faculty in implementing an effective transition of ME courses to an active and more inclusive learning format, and (b) engage in research on engineering education and workplace practices. This comes at a key transition period for our BSME program, as we are amid assessing what components from our largely online course formats from AY21 we want to retain as we head back to all in-person teaching for AY22. The Fellow will join a campus-wide cohort of Science and Engineering Education Fellows, as well as including education-related scholars in the Designing Education Lab (DEL).

2. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Instructional Assistant Professor position at the University of Florida Department of Engineering Education
The Department of Engineering Education at the University of Florida is searching for a 12-month Instructional Assistant Professor (Assistant Engineer – non tenure acquiring). Duties and responsibilities include teaching, revising, and developing undergraduate and graduate engineering courses, hands-on programming related educational laboratories, and may include both online as well as face-to-face instruction in computer programming. This position includes an allocation of 20% FTE for research in engineering education.

3. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Teaching Professor/Instructor position in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at University of Colorado Boulder
The Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time Instructor to teach in its undergraduate program. The instructor will be a member of the AES faculty and will participate in course development and assessment, faculty governance, and university service.
Candidates are sought who have an MS or PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field or equivalent industry experience. Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment. Preference will be given to applicants with prior university teaching experience, years of experience, and graduate degrees.
Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Candidates are expected to fit into curriculum groups focused on a) structures, materials, and structural dynamics or b) aerospace design and system engineering. These areas include courses related to statics and structural analysis, experimental and computational methods, material science for aerospace engineers, aerospace vehicle design and performance, and mechanics of materials. Engineering design or operational experience in one or both of these areas is ideal. An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required. A successful candidate in this position will teach multiple courses during the academic year and summer terms. This instructor position typically has effort allocations of 80% teaching and 20% service, however these allocations are negotiable for a highly qualified applicant. Research is typically not included in this position, unless related to engineering education.
