  1. COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT: Important changes to NSF PAPPG for the Engineering Education Community

 

NSF has published the 2024 version of the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 24-1) – https://new.nsf.gov/policies/pappg/24-1.  There are some significant changes which will affect folks planning proposals for submission on or after May 20, 2024. The America COMPETES Act and the CHIPS and Science Act added a number of new requirements that are now being implemented, so this year’s update to the PAPPG is more substantial than in prior years. I encourage folks to review the complete summary of changes here: https://new.nsf.gov/policies/pappg/24-1/summary-changes.

 

1) There are multiple changes to the “Biographical Sketch” section. In particular, I recommend reviewing the changes to the Synergistic Activities section.

 

2) The “Post-doctoral Mentoring Plan” has been changed to a “Mentoring Plan” and now includes mentoring of graduate students.

 

3) As part of the annual reporting, you’ll also have to include an Individual Development Plan for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

 

4) There are multiple changes throughout regarding how NSF handles projects engaging with Tribal Nations.

 

 

  1. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Engineering Faculty Study

 

I am currently recruiting for a study on faculty in engineering and the pedagogical decisions they make around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ). I am interested in recruiting any active faculty in engineering, regardless of whether they have engaged in any DEIJ-related activities. I am hoping to reach a wide and diverse group of faculty. The study explores the factors that shape how faculty make decisions in and outside of the classroom, including the classroom activities, the topics covered, and the topics not covered.

 

Participation in this study has three components, described in more detail below:(a) an Electronic Survey, (b) an Interview (up to 75 minutes), and (c) an Optional member-checking interview.

  1. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: The 2024 PEER Collaborative Dinner and Unconference

 

Are you a faculty (new hire, pre-tenure, mid-career tenured faculty), postdoc, or staff member who is primarily evaluated on your engineering education work? The PEER Collaborative is a growing community of people in similar situations who mentor and support each other in their engineering education research positions.

 

Each year, academic members who are primarily evaluated on engineering education research have been meeting to talk through our needs together in our emerging research-based discipline of engineering education. There are too few senior faculty with expertise in engineering education research, and those colleagues are either too sought after or otherwise engaged to be able to spend much time with early career faculty. An annual workshop and unconference hosted immediately after ASEE has helped us to meet our own needs through peer and near-peer mentoring. The goals of the workshop are to:

 

  1. Develop, support, and augment networks and working relationships
  2. Support and be supported by peers near your same career level on different aspects of work and personal life

 

PEER is unfunded and self-organized – an effort for us to build community and collaboratively work to meet our own needs. We hope you will join us!

  1. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Review Apprentice Faculty Grant Applications

 

We are seeking volunteers to review applications for this year’s ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program. The commitment requires reviewing 3 application packages, which will take approximately 30 minutes each. You will be provided specific review criteria and examples of what the AFG Program is looking for. Your responses will be collected online. The 2024 Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference will be in Washington DC this year at the Washington Hilton from October 13 to 16, 2024. This prominent international event is dedicated to advancing educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education, leading the world to the development of new research insights and educational approaches. The theme for the conference is “Embracing the challenges and transforming engineering and computing education in a technology-enhanced world.” FIE 2024 continues its long tradition of disseminating groundbreaking results in engineering and computing education and offers an ideal forum to share ideas, stay informed about the latest developments, and interact with colleagues across various disciplines. We extend a warm invitation to all our colleagues to join us in Washington DC from October 13 to 16, 2024, showcasing their research and fostering meaningful connections.

 

This year’s co-hosts include: the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa Polytechnic Institute, the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering.

Each year ERM recognizes a paper making significant contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. To continue with this tradition, the ERM Best Diversity Paper Committee is seeking volunteers to assist with reviewing papers for the award. Committee members will review a set of papers using an established rubric and engage in a group discussion to determine a winner. The review process will take place between late-March and April.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Engineering Workforce Development Postdoctoral Scholar at Cornell University

 

Engineering workforce development (EWD) involves efforts to provide opportunities to expand the ecosystem of engineering from K-12 through industry to broaden participation and better support the development of engineering knowledge, skills, attitudes, and career pathways across the lifespan of engineering. This postdoc will support two ongoing efforts at Cornell: 1) an NSF-funded project (CMMI 2229092) focused on the manufacture of polymer nanoparticles guided by artificial intelligence and 2) growing engineering workforce development activities in nanofabrication and semiconductors with the Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility. The postdoc will work with Prof. Allison Godwin to develop EWD programs and activities and evaluate the impact of these efforts on participants.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Chemical Engineering Active Learning Initiative Postdoctoral Scholar in Engineering Education at Cornell University

 

The Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our Active Learning Initiative (ALI) team as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Engineering Education. This position is part of an exciting project aimed at deconstructing the existing Unit Operations Laboratory course and developing new inquiry-based learning modules to be embedded across the curriculum to achieve our vision of making the School a “living laboratory.” The postdoctoral scholar will work directly with Professor Allison Godwin, a tenured engineering education faculty member in CBE. The impacts of this change will be studied using both qualitative and quantitative tools to understand how active and open-ended problem-solving throughout the curriculum affects student learning, identities as engineers, motivation, and career pathways.

 

Responsibilities include:

– Develop innovative inquiry-based modules using existing and new equipment. These modules will involve developing an open-ended problem, scaffolded learning and feedback, and assessment.

– Coordinate implementation efforts with a team of chemical engineering faculty excited to transform the curriculum.

– Collect and analyze data on the impact of these changes using various research methods, such as surveys, interviews, and observations.

– Contribute to the preparation of research reports and scholarly publications.

– Present research findings at conferences and seminars.

– Assist in the supervision and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students involved in the project.

 

Requirements:

– A B.S. in Chemical Engineering

– Ph.D. in Engineering Education, Engineering, or a related field.

– Demonstrated expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.

– Experience with data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

– Excellent oral and written communication skills.

– Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a research team.
