The 2024 Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference will be in Washington DC this year at the Washington Hilton from October 13 to 16, 2024. This prominent international event is dedicated to advancing educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education, leading the world to the development of new research insights and educational approaches. The theme for the conference is “Embracing the challenges and transforming engineering and computing education in a technology-enhanced world.” FIE 2024 continues its long tradition of disseminating groundbreaking results in engineering and computing education and offers an ideal forum to share ideas, stay informed about the latest developments, and interact with colleagues across various disciplines. We extend a warm invitation to all our colleagues to join us in Washington DC from October 13 to 16, 2024, showcasing their research and fostering meaningful connections.
This year’s co-hosts include: the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa Polytechnic Institute, the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering.
We invite you to summit abstracts for papers, pre-conference workshops, panels/student panels, and special sessions of interest using the abstract submission link. Check the Conference webpage for the most current information on submission dates.
- CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Review Apprentice Faculty Grant Applications
We are seeking volunteers to review applications for this year’s ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) Program. The commitment requires reviewing 3 application packages, which will take approximately 30 minutes each. You will be provided specific review criteria and examples of what the AFG Program is looking for. Your responses will be collected online. Past award winners and senior engineering education researchers are particularly encouraged to help! - CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:Join the ERM Best Diversity Paper Committee
Each year ERM recognizes a paper making significant contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. To continue with this tradition, the ERM Best Diversity Paper Committee is seeking volunteers to assist with reviewing papers for the award. Committee members will review a set of papers using an established rubric and engage in a group discussion to determine a winner. The review process will take place between late-March and April. - CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: NSF seeking reviewers for RITEL program
I’m seeking reviewers for the NSF Research on Innovative Technologies for Enhanced Learning (RITEL) program. Projects are expected to advance knowledge in both learning and technology, so proposals can sometimes get very technical. (The program used to be RETTL and before that Cyberlearning). - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Studies in Engineering EducationLooking for a New Co-Editor
Studies in Engineering Education invites applications and nominations for a new Co-Editor. SEE is an international, open-access, peer reviewed journal that provides a venue for high-quality research conducted in all settings and contexts relevant to engineering education, with an emphasis on contextually rich reflective discussions of issues and approaches important to engineering education researchers and practitioners. The Co-Editor of SEE will work with a team consisting of Co-Editor Dr. Marie Paretti, Associate Editors, and an Editorial Assistant to establish and execute processes to maintain SEE’s status as an international research journal in engineering education focused on qualitative and interpretive research paradigms. Among these processes and activities are: establishing and maintaining the editorial standards for the journal, managing the review and publication of papers, facilitating editorial board meetings, engaging the SEE advisory board, and training new associate editors. Executing these responsibilities requires approximately a 4 hour time commitment per week. Applicants should be recognized scholars in the field of engineering education at the national or international level.
If you’re interested in serving as Co-Editor, please send an email containing (a) a cover letter including a summary of relevant experiences, (b) a vision statement for the future of SEE and a statement of your editorial philosophy, and (c) a full Curriculum Vitae, all to Shane Brown at shane.brown@oregonstate.edu. The ProQual Institute for Interpretive Research Methods is perfect for STEM faculty who are transitioning to educational research, STEM faculty who teach qualitative and/or mixed methods, and graduate students and postdocs who want a fresh, visual-based, and interactive perspective on designing educational studies.
This fall, we invite you to join our growing ProQual community. Over 9-weeks, we will step you through a comprehensive program to demystify qualitative and mixed methods and empower you to confidently design and initiate your own high quality and impactful educational study or research program.
Who: STEM educators, post-docs, and graduate students
What: 9-week online course facilitated by two leading researchers in STEM education (Drs. Joachim Walther and Nicola Sochacka); weekly materials shared via Microsoft teams; chat channels for just-in-time, community-sourced questions and answers; access to a growing network of ProQual alumni

The ERM Best Paper Committee is looking for volunteers to help review papers for the Best Paper award. This process takes place after regular reviews are submitted, typically in the March to April time frame. Committee members are asked to review several papers using a rubric and then discuss as a group to identify finalist papers, which are reviewed by the whole committee to determine the winner. Sustainable Systems Engineering is a technical, life-centered, transdisciplinary field focusing on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems over their life cycles with the goal of environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Three Postdoctoral Fellowships in STEM Education – Florida International University
Florida International University (FIU) is recruiting a cohort of three postdoctoral fellows to conduct research alongside experts at the STEM Transformation Institute in Miami, Florida. The successful candidates will form a cohort of three postdoctoral fellows who will engage in innovative research in STEM education, emphasizing collaboration and interdisciplinarity. Fellows will receive holistic support to conduct research and develop professionally towards their individual career goals. Fellows will participate in cohort activities including 1) building their research portfolio by conducting independent original research and collaborating with existing nationally prominent projects, 2) engaging in a collaborative inquiry project to understand postdoctoral support systems across disciplines, 3) participating in individualized professional development support, and 4)receiving multidisciplinary mentoring from an intentionally chosen constellation of mentors. STEM Education research experience is not a requirement for application and the project is particularly interested in applicants who intend to work at an MSI in the future.
Postdoctoral research associates will receive a salary of $70,000 each year in addition to a competitive benefits package. This is a 12-month full-time, in-person position lasting two years. Additional benefits include up to $6,000 in support for travel to conferences, access to hiring undergraduate research assistants, and funds for publication costs. The target start date is August 1, 2024 but there is some flexibility. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents (DACA recipients do not qualify), have earned a STEM or related degree no more than 24 months before the start of the appointment, and must not hold a tenure-track position.
