Today is the day that authors must be registered for the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition and final papers should be finalized, unmasked, and uploaded. A big thank you to Drs. Catherine Berdanier and Benjamin Ahn as ASEE 2023 Vice Co-Chairs for getting us to this point!
In another email, I will also be sending out the ballot for our next election of ERM Chair and two Directors. Please take the time to vote for our next leadership. I look forward to passing the hat to our next chair this summer!
Finally, there is a Financial Town Hall today from 5-6 PM ET. I will plan on attending as much as I can around childcare pick up and send any key updates in the next announcements.

Save the Date: Wednesday, June 28 (dinner) and Thursday, June 29 (unconference day), 2023
Are you a faculty (new hire, pre-tenure, mid-career tenured faculty), postdoc, or staff member who is primarily evaluated on your engineering education work? The PEER Collaborative is a growing community of people in similar situations who mentor and support each other in their engineering education research positions.
Each year, academic members who are primarily evaluated on engineering education research have been meeting to talk through our needs together in our emerging research-based discipline of engineering education. There are too few senior faculty with expertise in engineering education research, and those colleagues are either too sought after or otherwise engaged to be able to spend much time with early career faculty. An annual workshop and unconference hosted immediately after ASEE has helped us to meet our own needs through peer and near-peer mentoring. The goals of the workshop are to 1. develop, support, and augment networks and working relationships and 2. support and be supported by peers near your same career level on different aspects of work and personal life.
Please join us for this year’s dinner and unconference!

- CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Biomedical Engineering Education, Special Call for Papers on Graduate Education in Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering Education announces a special call for papers focused on graduate education in biomedical engineering. Graduate education is broadly defined as formal education, such as masters and doctoral programs, and also broader topics that surround graduate or postdoctoral training. Examples may include graduate curricular elements, graduate program types, graduate professional and psychosocial support programs, admissions and promotion criteria, career placements, bridge programs or lifelong learning programs for alumni, mentoring programs, programs that develop graduate diversity, inclusion, and equity culture, extracurricular activities, and research or professional development training programs. - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 2024 Research in Engineering Education Symposium
4-6 January 2024
The biennial Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES) is the signature event of the Research in Engineering Education Network (REEN) that provides a forum to share, discuss, disseminate, and propagate high-quality research and best practices through the Global Engineering Education Research community. The 10th edition of the conference, REES 2024, will be held on 4-6 January 2024 in face-to-face mode. It is being jointly hosted by KLE Technological University (KLE Tech) and Indo-Universal Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE) at KLE Tech, B. V. Bhoomaraddi Campus, Vidyanagar, Hubballi, Karnataka, India (580031).
The emergence of India as an important player in the global scenario and the implementation of the National Education Policy in India make it apt to choose the theme of REES 2024 as “Connecting Research-Policy-Practice for Transforming Engineering Education”. The conference aspires to galvanise the efforts of leaders, academia, policy, regulatory and monitoring agencies in engineering education worldwide to contribute and nurture the engineering education research ecosystem. In line with this aspiration, we are delighted to invite submissions of papers and workshop proposals.
- The conference will be held in face-to-face mode only.
- Themed clusters of papers will be presented in 90-minute sessions, including a 3-minute recording for each paper followed by a discussion on all papers in the session.
- Workshops will be held face-to-face at KLE Tech for a duration of 90 minutes.

- NOTICE OF NEW PROCESSES: Two New Processes for JEE
The Journal of Engineering Education has two new processes to share with the engineering education research community as you consider potential outlets for your research, outlined below and here:https://doi.org/10.1002/jee.20517. Please share widely with your collaborators!
- In an effort to increase access to JEE for authors, administrative fees and page charges will no longer be charged to publish in JEE. We hope this reduction in cost will encourage scholars from around the world and from a variety of institutional contexts to consider JEE as an outlet for their work. Wiley will continue to provide the option to publish articles open access for a fee—many institutions have agreements with Wiley to publish open access with a discount. ASEE members will continue to receive a discount for that open access option .
- In our efforts to find efficiencies in the submission-to-publication process, we are eliminating one step in JEE’s process. Authors of accepted papers have previously submitted penultimate versions to a JEE copyeditor prior to Wiley’s final proofing services. Accepted manuscripts will now be sent directly to Wiley for final proofing. We hope this shift will reduce the overall time to publication—this change also allowed us to remove administrative fees and page charges.

- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Upcoming National Effective Teaching Institute offerings (NETI-1 and NETI-2)
Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland, and Michael Prince will lead the long-standing foundational NETI-1 workshop, which has been offered since 1991. The more advanced NETI-2 workshop will also be offered. Previous NETI programs have reached over 2800 participants from more than 365 different schools. Our past participant evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive.
NETI-1, Course Design and Student Engagement, will be offered July 26-28, 2023, at Purdue University. The workshop features material for relatively new faculty members and other material designed to equip experienced faculty members to become teaching leaders and mentors on their campuses. Participants will include up to 50 faculty members from all branches of engineering, engineering technology, and other STEM areas. The registration fee is $1275 per participant, which covers organization and presentation costs, participant notebooks, lunches, and breaks. Participants also receive a copy of Felder & Brent’s Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide and the option of touring the School of Engineering Education’s facilities. There is a discount for bringing larger teams from the same institution. Travel expenses, including breakfasts and dinners, are not included. NETI-2, Student Teams and Advanced Student Engagement, will be offered August 7-8, 2023, at University of San Diego. This workshop is intended to build on the skills acquired in NETI-1 by introducing more advanced instructional strategies. Applicants are not limited to those who have taken NETI-1, but should understand that content in order to fully engage in this workshop. Participants will include up to 50 faculty members from all branches of engineering, engineering technology, and other STEM areas. NETI-2 registration is $1100 through May 1; after May 1, the fee increases to $1200 per participant.

Dr. Michael Prince and a team of collaborators will offer the long-standing teaching workshop, “How to Engineer Engineering Education”, at Bucknell University from July 12-14, 2023. The workshop is designed to introduce both new and more experienced instructors to practical instructional design for STEM faculty. The program prepares instructors to adopt research-based practices that increase student engagement and learning. This workshop has been offered for over 20 years and has received overwhelming positive reviews. The registration fee is $850 per participant, which covers workshop attendance, participant notebooks, meals and refreshment breaks. - POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Lecturer in Engineering Fundamentals, University of Tennessee, Knoxville
We are looking for a passionate educational innovator to join our Engineering Fundamentals team in Fall 2023 in the Tickle College of Engineering! If you have a passion for first year engineering education and innovative pedagogical techniques, please consider applying to our Lecturer position.
This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 9-month appointment. Candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate in engineering or computer science with an undergraduate degree in any engineering or computer science field at time of appointment; strongly preferred are candidates with a doctorate in electrical, computer engineering, computer science, or engineering education.

- POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Associate in Engineering Education at University at Buffalo
The Department of Engineering Education (DEE), in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences invites candidates to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. The successful candidate will work as a postdoctoral scholar with Dr. Corey Schimpf, collaborating on and taking the lead on research themes around:
- Analyzing how expertise develops in engineering design across the continuum from novice pre-college students to practicing engineers;
- Advancing engineering design research by integrating new theoretical or analytical frameworks (e.g., from data science or complexity science); and
- Conducting design-based research to develop scaffolding tools for supporting the learning of complex skills like design.
Specific projects the successful candidate will have an opportunity to work on include studying front-end design skill development in middle and high school students undertaking Earth science and community oriented design projects, exploring how elementary students learn engineering design, collaboration and socio-emotional learning skills through an augmented reality game and creating new ways to scaffold their learning, and investigating how increased agency and power or influence in projects affects more senior engineering undergraduates development.
The successful candidate will support ongoing research endeavors in the described areas through:
- Execution and/or supervision of data collection, quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and scholarly writing and dissemination.
- Coordinating and/or supervising research, curriculum development and professional development efforts
- Development of data collection instruments
- Submission of research protocols for ethics review
- Mentoring graduate and/or undergraduate students
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Engineering Education, Science Education, Education, Design, or related field
- Experience with researching or teaching engineering design at any level
- Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Ability to work independently, provide leadership to an interdisciplinary team and understand different perspectives of stakeholders
- Ability to work on campus
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience researching or teaching engineering design and/or earth science in K-12 settings
- Experience with R, Python or other environments for data science research methods
