Dear ERM members,

Happy New Year! I hope that the break has treated you well and provided some rest and recuperation from the previous term. I’m back in the office after a semester away for sabbatical. I was a little grumpy about the early start to the semester, the cold weather (hello high of 30 °F), and having to move my stuff back into my office. But, now that I’ve gotten settled back into the space, I’m realizing how nice it is to have a dedicated workspace, and that despite all of the uncertainty surrounding the start of the semester, I am looking forward to getting back into a routine.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEER: Delegate Nomination to the Interdivisional Town Hall Planning Committee

Each Town Hall Meeting addresses a timely topic through a bottom-up ideation process, focusing on topics that are of current and/or pressing interest to a wide range of ASEE members. For example, when ABET released the first draft of the current Engineering Criteria, the 2016 Town Hall served as an interactive way to crowdsource feedback that was then compiled and sent to ABET leadership (and yes, it did have an impact). Each year’s Planning Committee determines the Town Hall topic for the upcoming Conference and then helps to organize the event, which generally attracts approximately 200-300 ASEE members.

For many years, the Town Hall Meeting was sponsored by ASEE’s Interdivisional Cooperation Committee; now, the planning is transitioning to a PIC-level committee format where each division can appoint one delegate to serve as its representative for a two-year term. The expectation is that delegates will assist in the planning of two (2) consecutive Town Hall events. We are currently recruiting delegates from PIC II and PIC IV; we’ll recruit delegates from the remaining PICs next year and fully transition into the new format at that time.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Research Project on What do engineering faculty think about wellness?

We are exploring how engineering faculty in the U.S. define wellness, its dimensions, and its role in academic spaces. Through an exploration of faculty previous and current experiences pursuing their own wellness we are trying to understand how their beliefs about wellness get to permeate their teaching, advising, and mentoring practices.

To conduct this research, we are inviting engineering faculty for a 30-60 mins interview through Zoom.

The Social Oriented Interdisciplinary STEM Education Research Group (SOI-STEM, https://tec.mx/en/soi-stem) is currently seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and conduct research activities to transform higher education. SOI-STEM is part of the Institute for the Future of Education (IFE, https://tec.mx/en/ife), which belongs to Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico’s top private university with 26 campuses. The duration of the position is three years.

SOI-STEM’s objective is to foster a socially-oriented interdisciplinary vision in STEM education to meet the challenges of the 21st century through education that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. Qualifications

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Director Learning at University of Michigan Center for Socially Engaged Design

Creating engaging experiences for students and other learners to develop and practice socially engaged design skills is at the heart of what we do at the University of Michigan Center for Socially Engaged Design (C-SED). This role is a ‘first of its kind’ role at the Center and you will lead C-SED’s efforts to incorporate the concepts of socially engaged design into new and existing learning experiences for students inside and outside the classroom, in person and online. You will use, and refine our existing repository of 2500+ educational assets which includes lesson plans, workshop materials, online learning tools, and slide decks.

The Assistant Director will bring expertise in socially engaged design, human centered design, design education, and/or methods of design ethnography (ex: stakeholder engagement, data synthesis, ideation, prototyping) and will connect our educational content with the faculty, students, and programs that use the content. The person in this role will meet with faculty, student organizations and the C-SED team to understand learning objectives and subsequently design learning experiences that meet those objectives at a variety of scales. Designing learning experiences includes using evidence-based recommended practices to enhance student learning and putting C-SED’s library of educational content and resources into actionable workshop and curriculum plans. The Assistant Director will be an important team member in both the packaging of our content for instructors and learners as well as identifying gaps in our library and creating new ways of translating learning objectives into learning experiences.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant / Associate / Full Professor in Engineering Education at Arizona State University

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and The Polytechnic School (TPS) seeks applicants for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in engineering education. TPS is located on ASU’s Polytechnic, a 600-acre campus in a scenic desert arboretum in Mesa, AZ. The Polytechnic School includes more than 70 faculty, nearly 6,500 students, four fully online degree programs and two PhD programs – Engineering Education Systems and Design (EESD) and Human Systems Engineering. Tenured and tenure track faculty members in the Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses, mentor both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities within the institution and within their scholarly/professional communities. The successful applicant for this position will be able to teach courses both at the doctoral level within the EESD program and at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within the TPS engineering programs. They will also contribute positively to continuous improvement and cultivation of a diverse, equitable, inclusive and belonging environment for our faculty, students, and staff.

Required qualifications are an earned doctorate in engineering, engineering education, or a field closely related to the stated research and teaching focus of this position, by the time of appointment; minimum of one degree at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral level in an engineering discipline; demonstrated evidence of educational research capability. The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Engineering Pedagogy, specifically in implementing active learning strategies at the individual course and the curriculum level. The candidate is also expected to have a research program in mathematical modeling and engineering simulations.
