ERM Announcements, October 15, 2021

Dear ERM members,

 

I hope those of you attending the Frontiers in Education Conference are having a good time either connecting in person or virtually. We will hold a virtual ERM business meeting in the next few weeks; I will send out a date and time soon. Lately, I have been writing a lot of recommendation letters, supporting edits of applications, and thinking about conferencing.

 

Dr. Monique Ross, introduced me to the phrase “lift as you climb.” This phrase is from a longer quote from Mary Church Terrell (more here) and is associated with the work by her and Sojourner Truth, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Harriet Tubman, and Ida B. Wells in the Black suffrage movement. “Lifting as we climb” was adopted as the motto of the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) as they fought not only for voting rights but also for progress at the intersections of race and gender. This phrase has become a way to describe the consideration of where you have been and an intentional investment in others.

 

While I am not engaged in the same context or struggle as those august women, this phrase has resonated with me, and I think of it often. It is a reminder that supporting and nurturing other peoples’ talent is what lasts. It’s also a reminder that the efforts started by these women are far from over. Often academia focuses on an individual’s work or reputation; indeed, those aspects are the typical evaluation criteria for hiring, tenure, promotion, and awards. And, those systems have been historically constructed to benefit white cishet men. As ERM works towards our strategic goals to be a community where its members feel welcome, included, and that they have a voice as well as one that recognizes its members, I hope that conferences can provide ways to support, uplift, and connect with those who are new to the community and those who are behind us in their academic journey. We also have an opportunity, particularly those of us with privilege in our academic networks, to intentionally work against a system and lift others .

The Department of Engineering Education in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Engineering and Applied Science is accepting applications for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Education to further the research and study of how to best educate engineering students at all levels. Graduate students will gain expertise in theories related to the teaching and learning of engineering, research methodologies, and advancement in their chosen technical engineering discipline.   1. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: LGBTQ+ Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, hosted by ASEE

 

Join us on October 8 (1-4 PM ET) and 11 (4-5 PM ET). Our partners from 500 Women Scientists will be facilitating the Edit-a-thon and will guide us to the process of becoming Wikipedia editors. During the event, you will work with other editors to create or edit an article. You will be able select someone from our list of profiles of LGBTQ+ scientists and engineers or add a new person to the list who meets Wikipedia’s notability criteria, raising the visibility of the LGBTQ+ in STEM community.

 

No experience needed, but we do ask participants to do a few things before the event:

 

o   October 8th (1-4 PM ET) – Work Day

o   October 11th (4-5 PM ET) – Celebration Day

  1. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: Proposal Writing Workshop for NSF S-STEM Proposals

This online virtual workshop and webinar series will help faculty to develop competitive proposals to the NSF S-STEM program (NSF 21-550). Workshop webinars will focus on the major components of NSF S-STEM proposals. Each team will receive one-on-one mentoring from proposal ideation through to successful submission of proposals by the NSF deadline of March 16, 2022. Participation is limited to 20 teams (application required).

We are planning to distribute the workshop activity over a series of short zoom meetings held approximately bi-weekly rather than concentrate everything into one or two long days. Webinars will be recorded to accommodate participants’ diverse schedules.

Situated in Clemson’s College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS), ESED is a nationally renowned unique program as it networks scholars in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) education research areas. The ESED Ph.D. program provides a rich curriculum integrating STEM education with social science and education research methods.   1. SEEKING CONTRIBUTIONS: Edited volume on Latinx Students in Engineering

 

We are seeking contributions for a university press edited volume on Latinx Students in Engineering. We aim to present – across studies with diverse frameworks, methodologies, and study contexts – a volume of work on (1) how Latinx students navigate through Engineering fields that have for too long been hostile and chilly environments, and (2) interventions, contexts, and institutional environments that facilitate their successful attainment of careers and degrees. We intend to offer this edited book as a contribution to the fields of STEM education, Engineering education, Higher Education, and Latinx Studies. We are seeking 2-3 additional chapters that may be collaboratively authored, with attention to one or more of the following: gender, social class, Afro-Latinx and/or Indigenous identities, and intersectional experiences for Latinx students. The Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education within the College of Engineering, is excited to announce our search for a postdoctoral scholar. The Leonhard Center is an endowed Center that forms partnerships with engineering faculty and programs in designing, implementing, and evaluating research-based innovations in undergraduate and graduate engineering education. In addition, the Leonhard Center initiates and evaluates College-wide projects in support of the College’s strategic goals. The Leonhard Center also provides workshops and summer academies for faculty on a wide range of topics from creativity and innovation to engineering communication. The Leonhard Center prides itself on its creative and positive workplace culture and welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds.

 

Under the mentorship of the Center’s Director of Assessment and Instructional Support, the postdoctoral scholar will lead several projects. The primary project is a research study, funded by the KEEN foundation, investigating the relationship between engineering faculty beliefs and instructional practices. The project will generate new understanding on how faculty beliefs (such as growth or fixed mindset) across different domains may impact instructional decision making, including the adoption of evidence-based instructional practices. Additional projects may include collaborating with faculty to design and evaluate projects in engineering education and offering college-wide workshops on innovative instructional practices and educational research.  Working in the Leonhard Center will provide candidates with varied experience in both engineering educational research as well as faculty development.  The position requires the ability to design and conduct research using qualitative and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in communication and collaboration. The ability to publish and present the results of the studies at national or international conferences is also important for the position. Minimum requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in an appropriate field such as engineering education, educational psychology, or higher education. Knowledge of current trends in engineering education is desirable. This position is for one-year with additional years of funding available if there is mutual interest.

The Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems at the University of Georgia is hiring a 1 year postdoc position, with possibility of renewal, focused on science and engineering education. The individual hired will work as part of an interdisciplinary team from the University of Georgia and the United States Army Corps of Engineers – Engineer Research and Development Center (USACE-ERDC). The project is part of the Education initiative of the Network for Engineering with Nature (n-ewn.org). The postdoc will work with the broader team to train students and professionals in the theory and practice of nature-based solutions, emphasizing integrative systems thinking, interdisciplinarity, empathy, and equity to develop holistic, socially situated solutions to complex climate adaptation problems. This initiative will result in a variety of educational outcomes reaching multiple audiences and ranging in scale from transportable lectures and modules on Engineering With Nature to degree-scale curricula and internship programs. The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating these activities with partners from diverse disciplines and sectors.

Candidates must have a PhD in a related field (e.g., Science Education, Engineering Education, Anthropology, Geography, Ecology, Public Administration/Policy, Planning, Civil & Environmental Engineering). Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and working with novel forms of pedagogy is highly desired. Candidates should have outstanding communication skills and the ability to coordinate across large groups. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in informal education, professional training, curriculum development and/or outreach.

The Engineering Department at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position, to begin August 2022, contingent upon funding approval. We seek candidates from a range of engineering disciplines as well as industry and non-traditional pathways, who are energetic, creative, and committed to excellence in engineering education. The successful candidate must be able to teach courses in the Electrical & Computer Engineering concentration area, and Project & Design courses of the Engineering major. Launched in Fall of 2020, the Engineering program offers a general engineering B.S. degree designed to meet the requirements for ABET accreditation, with concentrations in Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Sustainable Civil Engineering. ERM Announcements, October 1, 2021

Dear ERM members,

 

Happy Friday and October! This week I gave my first in-person invited talk in almost two years. I had the pleasure of spending time with the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky. I particularly enjoyed meeting Dr. Sarah Wilson. She’s doing some really interesting work on student mental health and is the first engineering education hire in the department.

 

As I was driving back home, I thought about how many leaps forward the engineering education has made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how far we still have to go. While the change was abrupt, challenging, and isolating, it also forced me to try new things and be more creative and flexible in teaching. I have learned and stretched a lot to consider new ways of teaching students that I will continue moving forward. And at the same time, as I spoke to a crowd of 3-D faces with real-time emotions and had informal one-on-one conversations, I also realized how much I had missed those in-person interactions. I was buoyed by my opportunity to visit with other researchers and share ideas. I have also been reflecting on a recent seminar in my department from Dr. James Holly, Jr., and what more I need to be doing in my own space to make engineering education more inclusive, particularly for Black students.

 

It might be surprising to those of you who get these announcements, but I’m not a particularly reflective person. I have to be intentional about reflection. These announcements have been a bi-weekly space where I have to write something. Often, I find myself reflecting over the past couple of weeks on what’s been on my mind to share with y’all. I have been in survival mode over the past year and a half. Only recently have I begun to think about where I’ve been and what I’ve learned over this time. I don’t have any synthesized pearls of wisdom at this point, but I’m trying to make sense of what moving forward means and how to continue to grow.

 

In these announcements, there are a lot of job openings and engineering education graduate open house events. I am also making a request to those of you who plan to attend FIE in-person or virtually—ERM needs some volunteers for the Helen Plants Award Committee (General Announcement 1, below). If you like going to non-traditional special sessions, we need a few folks to help with attending sessions and asking participants to fill out a survey.

The PFE: Research Initiation in Engineering Formation (PFE: RIEF) program has two goals: 1) Support research in the Professional Formation of Engineers (PFE), and 2) Increase the community of researchers conducting PFE research. Under the mentorship of the Center’s Director of Assessment and Instructional Support, the postdoctoral scholar will lead several projects. The primary project is a research study, funded by the KEEN foundation, investigating the relationship between engineering faculty beliefs and instructional practices. The project will generate new understanding on how faculty beliefs (such as growth or fixed mindset) across different domains may impact instructional decision making, including the adoption of evidence-based instructional practices. Additional projects may include collaborating with faculty to design and evaluate projects in engineering education and offering college-wide workshops on innovative instructional practices and educational research.  Working in the Leonhard Center will provide candidates with varied experience in both engineering educational research as well as faculty development.  The position requires the ability to design and conduct research using qualitative and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in communication and collaboration. The ability to publish and present the results of the studies at national or international conferences is also important for the position. Minimum requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in an appropriate field such as engineering education, educational psychology, or higher education. Knowledge of current trends in engineering education is desirable. This position is for one-year with additional years of funding available if there is mutual interest.

The postdoc will work with the broader team to train students and professionals in the theory and practice of nature-based solutions, emphasizing integrative systems thinking, interdisciplinarity, empathy, and equity to develop holistic, socially situated solutions to complex climate adaptation problems. This initiative will result in a variety of educational outcomes reaching multiple audiences and ranging in scale from transportable lectures and modules on Engineering With Nature to degree-scale curricula and internship programs. The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating these activities with partners from diverse disciplines and sectors.

Candidates must have a PhD in a related field (e.g., Science Education, Engineering Education, Anthropology, Geography, Ecology, Public Administration/Policy, Planning, Civil & Environmental Engineering).
