ERM Announcements, April 1, 2021

Dear ERM members,

Be on the alert today! I woke up early this morning to my son very excitedly telling me that there was a bear in the backyard, which is not uncommon where I live. I jumped out of bed with my phone eager to capture a photo…and then realized I had been duped! Happy April Fool’s Day everyone! I hope you pull some good jokes on your friends and family…and aren’t fooled like I was!

There are lots of good announcements in today’s e-mail! I wanted to call your attention to the first general announcement, which is the open nomination for ERM Directors and Chair. Running for a position is an excellent way to get involved with ERM. And for those of you who have already held leadership positions in ERM, I hope to see you running for Chair! I have really enjoyed this position and getting to know all the ERM members. But it’s almost time for me to pass the hat to someone else. Get your nominations in soon – they are due by April 20.

I hope you all have a great rest of your week! Happy Spring! And Happy Easter to those who celebrate it.

Sarah

ASEE ANNOUNCEMENT: Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) March 2021 Updates
Chairs Updates: Our proposal to the ASEE Board for a Year of Impact on Racial Equity was approved! The year will start after the 2021 Annual Conference ends. We will need your help to make the year of impact as powerful as possible. Thanks to all the quarterly all-hands meeting attendees who provided great ideas for the different focus areas that we proposed.

We are also working with ASEE to raise visibility and address an issue with ASEE conference papers that become inaccessible to screen readers during the formatting process, and also a bigger issue that may need Author’s Kit revisions to make papers accessible prior to uploading.

JEE ANNOUNCEMENT: Journal of Engineering Education Revised Author and Reviewer Guidelines: Seeking Community Input
The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE) is in the process of updating the Author and Reviewer guidelines to increase transparency in the manuscript submission and review processes, and to incorporate aspects of diversity, equity and inclusivity in these guidelines. The JEE Editorial Board invites members of the engineering education research community to provide feedback on these revised guidelines either as part of a focus group or individually. We will be gathering community feedback through April 2021. If you would like to provide feedback on the revised JEE Author and Reviewer guidelines, please complete this questionnaire: https://asuengineering.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9ME95wASMqRw0ku

JEE ANNOUNCEMENT: JEE Star Reviewers

In 2017, the Journal of Engineering Education began recognizing outstanding reviewers for JEE with Star Reviewer Awards. Reviewers who have completed three or more reviews in last year and who Editorial Board members nominate based on the quality of their reviews are considered for this award. This year, we had 31 nominees for Star Reviewer. Editorial Board members Jennifer Chiu, Nadia Kellam and Noah Schroeder read the reviews that these nominees submitted in 2020. Features of these outstanding reviews emerged from their selection process, which include: review includes a summary of what the article was about; review provides positive ways forward (not just a critique); review provides notes to the editor; review includes some discussion of reviewer positionality; review demonstrates critical thinking about the manuscript; and review is detailed. This type of feedback is invaluable in cultivating our community of scholars in engineering education.

The Star Reviewers for 2020 are:

• Andrea Mazzurco, Swineburne Institute of Technology

• Cassandra McCall, Utah State University

• Angela Minchiello, Utah State University

• Jacki Rohde, Purdue University

• Stephen Secules, Florida International University

We are fortunate to have so many outstanding reviewers, and are pleased to recognize these five individuals who rose to the top of the list. Congratulations, Andrea, Cassandra, Angela, Jacki and Stephen! These awards will be recognized at the 2021 ASEE Annual Conference and Exhibition. Many thanks to Jennie, Nadia and Noah for their hard work in reviewing these reviewers.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: PEER Collaborative Annual Unconference Announcement, Information, and Registration

Are you a faculty member (pre-tenure, tenured or mid-career faculty) or research staff who is primarily evaluated on your engineering education research? If so, the PEER Collaborative and unconference may be for you. PEER is a small and growing community of active participants and alumni whose primary role in higher education derive from engineering education scholarship. The Collaborative engages in peer mentoring and support in engineering education scholarship related matters within a community of similarly situated people.

The unconference is free to participate and typically involves a dinner and unconference immediately following the ASEE Annual Conference.

As of today, we have not decided if PEER 2021 will be in-person or virtual. We plan make a final decision at the end of May (when ASEE makes their decision), but the decision also hinges on if we can find a physical space that will allow a group to meet in-person (right now universities are not allowing outside groups on campus). Please save the following dates:

· If in-person, Thursday, July 29 (dinner) and Friday, July 30 (unconference day), Long Beach area

· If virtual (prior to ASEE conference), Monday, June 21 (unconference and dinner) and Tuesday, June 22 (unconference day), platform TBD

Please direct any questions to Kaela Martin (kaela.martin@erau.edu).

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Applications being accepted to the 5th Dissertation Institute

We are pleased to announce the 5th Dissertation Institute (DI), an interactive workshop for underrepresented (African American, Native American, Pacific Island and Hispanic American) graduate students in engineering. The 2021 DI will take place July 10th – 16th on the University of Michigan campus.* The Institute is funded by the National Science Foundation and hosted by University of Texas, Dallas and Virginia Tech. The primary goal is to address issues that prolong completion times for those at the dissertation proposal preparation and dissertation completion stages of the targeted population.

The week-long event will focus on skills and strategies needed to successfully complete the dissertation process as well as provide networking opportunities to build connections for future collaborative career advancement. Institute participants will build new writing habits, work on their dissertation or dissertation proposal, and learn skills that will help them continue making progress when they return to their institutions. Participants will be housed in a private room; will share a bathroom with one other participant; receive meals; and be reimbursed for travel costs up to $500. As a part of the application process, participants will be asked to identify barriers that have impeded their progress to completing their dissertation and to provide suggestions for additional topics to be presented.

We seek your assistance in identifying students who might benefit from participating in the Institute. The application deadline is April 1st. Please share the following link with students, faculty and any other colleagues who might assist us in announcing this wonderful opportunity: https://www.dissertationinstitute.com/
