ERM Announcements, November 15, 2020

Dear ERM members,

Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks ago! I feel like the theme of all my ERM newsletters is that I can’t believe how fast time is flying by. And yet, at the same time, this year kind of feels like an eternity.

This will be an interesting Thanksgiving here in the US. Instead of seeing my family in Connecticut, I will be sticking to home, staying with just the close circle of people I see here in State College. As much as I would like to see my family, it’s just not worth the risk this year. I care too much about the people I love to travel this year and to risk spreading the virus to others. I plan to use this Thanksgiving to enjoy some quiet time, eat lots of yummy food, and spend time reflecting on all the things I’m grateful for this year. And probably put up my Christmas decorations!

Some of those things I’m grateful for this year include this ERM Community, which I know I can always count on for engaging discussions and enthusiastic service. A special thank you goes out to Stephanie Cutler from Penn State for volunteering to be our 2022 Vice Chair for ERM Programs. She’ll be joining a great group of Kerrie Douglas from Purdue (2021 Vice Chair) and Jay Pembridge from Embry Riddle (2020 Vice Chair) in the planning for the ASEE annual conferences. Thank you, Jay, Kerrie, and Stephanie for your hard work in this role!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Eat lots of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie! And of course, stay safe in whatever you do and wherever you go.

Sarah

ASEE ANNOUNCEMENT: Board and CDEI Statements on the Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping
The ASEE Board of Directors released a statement regarding the September 22, 2020 Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-combating-race-sex-stereotyping/). To read ASEE’s response, please see https://www.asee.org/documents/about-us/the-organization/public-policy/Formal_ASEE_Response_to_22_Sept_EO_16_Oct_2020.pdf

The ASEE Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) also released a statement on this Executive Order which can be read at https://diversity.asee.org/deicommittee/2020/11/03/reaffirming-commitment-to-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-a-community-call-to-action/.

ASEE ANNOUNCEMENT: Cultivating Inclusive Communities Community of Practice and Virtual Workshop
The CDEI has started a Cultivating Inclusive Communities Community of Practice and Virtual Workshop. This free workshop/community allows participants to 1) connect with others who care about diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering, 2) expand their network with like-minded professionals, and 3) learn more about diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in engineering education. For more information, see https://community.elevateinclusion.com/plans/102962

ASEE ANNOUNCEMENT: Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 2021 Awards
ASEE’s Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) is excited to share information with you regarding our awards for the 2021 Conference.

We have two awards this year: 1) ASEE Constituent Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award (https://diversity.asee.org/deicommittee/asee-constituent-equity-and-inclusion-award/), and 2)Best Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Paper Award (https://diversity.asee.org/deicommittee/best-paper/).

Divisions are encouraged to submit a nomination for the ASEE Constituent DEI Award. This award recognizes the actions of an ASEE constituent group who can show measurable accomplishments in 1) making the Society more inclusive of members from historically marginalized groups and/or 2) addressing issues of diversity, equity & inclusion within their constituency and/or the broader engineering education community.

To support a clear interpretation of these awards, CDEI hosted a virtual workshop on “Diversity Papers: Tips and Guidelines for Authors and Evaluators” (https://diversity.asee.org/deicommittee/workshops/). In addition to this workshop, rubrics for both awards are available on the websites above. We believe that your authors can benefit from this information as they prepare papers and proposals.

RESEARCH STUDY: Survey and potential interview on motivations and barriers of your entry of engineering education research
Calling all interested faculty in entering engineering education research!

Please consider participating in this study centered on understanding faculty motivations and barriers of engineering education research (EER). By understanding these motivations and barriers, introductory EER programs can better target and provide resources for interested faculty members. Such outcomes are insightful in expanding the EER community with the hopes of creating a community that is more inclusive and diverse.

If willing and able, please take and share the survey (5 minutes) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MDQ2Y53. Selected participants will be notified via email for one 30-45 minute follow-up interview. If you have any questions, please email Mia Ko mko5@illinois.edu Thank you.

RESEARCH STUDY: Survey on STEM learning among Black and Brown undergraduate students
Researchers at Stanford University are conducting a study on STEM learning among Black and Brown undergraduate students, especially those who identify as Latinx/o/a, Afro-Latinx or Hispanics. This study seeks to improve STEM education for these communities. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes. You will have the option to enter a raffle for 20 prizes of $50 each.

If you are interested, please access the survey here https://stanforduniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9sIxBRFfoe15kwZ or share with your students and colleagues. If you have questions, please contact the Principal Investigator, Greses Pérez, at greses@stanford.edu. Thank you! Gracias.

RESEARCH STUDY: Entering and Leaving Careers in Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics
A team of researchers at Penn State seeks participants to complete a 5-10 minute survey on why individuals enter and/or leave careers in Computer Science, Engineering and Math (CSEM). This study aims to add to the current knowledge base by asking individuals to describe their education and career choices in their own words. The primary populations of interest are those who are working or have worked in CSEM. The survey can be accessed at https://redcap.ctsi.psu.edu/surveys/?s=NCF3JHX4Y9. For more information, see http://csempathways.wpengine.com/

RESEARCH STUDY: Interviews of practicing engineers
Researchers at Stanford University are seeking to interview practicing engineers in multiple engineering disciplines for the purpose of characterizing back-of-the-envelope (BOTE) problems. We will first ask and learn about general, conceptual ideas of BOTE problems and then follow that up by asking about specific details of BOTE problems since BOTE problems are not well defined. This is important because students are not being taught to do these types of calculations, yet this approach has historically had many useful applications (e.g. Enrico Fermi estimating the bomb energy yield of the first atomic bomb in the Trinity test). If you are interested, please sign up for an interview here: https://calendly.com/eburkhol/back-of-the-envelope-study or forward this announcement to engineers that you know. The results will be used to improve undergraduate instruction and produce more capable engineers for the workforce.
