NSF ANNOUNCEMENT: Invitation to complete panelist availability survey for EEC programs
NSF is organizing review panels for various Engineering Education and Centers (EEC) programs in the spring and early summer of 2020. The panels will be held either on-site at NSF (Alexandria VA) or via teleconference (a “virtual” panel). We seek reviewers with experience in engineering education research who are available and interested in serving in this vital role for our community. General parameters for reviewers: you will review ~10 proposals, and NSF will pay you for your time (currently $480 for panel days, $280 for travel days, plus appropriate transportation costs).
Please complete our panelist availability survey (5 minutes to complete) by January 21, 2020, so that we can down-select to a highly-qualified and diverse group of reviewers for each of these panels.

NSF ANNOUNCEMENT: New EDSE program director at NSF
Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Kathryn Jablokow has accepted the position of program director for the Engineering Design and Systems Engineering program within CMMI at NSF. Dr. Jablokow, a professor at Penn State, brings a breadth of expertise and experiences to the program that will serve the community well. Two of her goals are to broaden the scope of the EDSE program’s research portfolio and grow the PI community. She will begin the position full-time this summer. In the interim, she is working part-time as an expert for the program. Please direct your EDSE program questions to her at edse@nsf.gov and realize that responses may take a few days during the winter and spring months.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Andy Dong for serving in an expert role for the EDSE program over much of the last year as we searched for a program director. As a member of this research community myself, I do want to thank you for your patience as we navigated a longer than normal search process to fill this role. I look forward to working with Dr. Jablokow and am excited for the EDSE program’s future.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) and the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) Conference
The World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) and the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) under the auspices of IFEES will be taking place in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa from 16 – 20 November 2020.
The theme of the Conference is Disruptive Engineering Education amidst Global Challenges. Engineering education changes the world, and must respond to a rapidly changing world. Meeting in Africa, we are well placed to consider how we should be educating engineers who can address the challenges and opportunities of extreme climate change, globalisation, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution; engineers who will develop sustainable technologies for inclusive societies.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Canadian Design Workshops
The Canadian Design Workshop is a biennial workshop modelled after the Clive L. Dym Mudd Design Workshops and in partnership with the Center for Design Teaching at Harvey Mudd College. The workshop aims to investigate and share information on design education unique to Canadian institutions. The workshop will focus on elevating engineering design education and research by establishing a network of design educators and researchers within the Canadian context.
While the workshop has a Canadian focus, authors from outside of Canada are welcome to participate by submitting a paper aligned with the conference theme. The inaugural Canadian Design Workshop will be held at the University of Waterloo, which is home to Canada’s largest engineering school, with over 8,000 undergraduate students enrolled in 14 engineering programs and more than 2000 graduate students.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: First International Conference on Education and Human Development
The Center for Education and Human Development, Graduate School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is proud to announce the First International Conference on Education and Human Development (EHD-1) to be held on May 16-17, 2020 in Shanghai, China. EHD-1 features the theme of “Pioneering Higher Education Innovation: Teaching and Learning in Research Universities”. It will provide a platform for global leaders, policy makers, administrators, scholars, professionals and practitioners around the world to discuss critical issues related to teaching and learning in higher education. Engineering education is an important part for this conference. Renowned speakers in engineering education will be invited.
Scholars and practitioners in engineering education are invited to address topics including, but not limited to:
· Educational Innovations: In what ways may research universities initiate educational innovations to produce talents of the next generation? What educational innovations can be launched at institutional, departmental, and course levels in light of the societal and technological changes?
· Multiple Stakeholders Engagement: How should multiple stakeholders (e.g. policy-makers, administrators, professors, students, employers) react/respond to the societal, economic, and technological challenges that research universities are facing? What are the best practices in enhancing the collaborative efforts between research universities and industrial, governmental and other sectors?
· Student Learning Experiences: How should curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular learning activities be organized and implemented to enhance students’ learning experiences? What are the best practices in increasing students’ engagement and improving students’ learning outcomes?
· Assessment and Evaluation: What assessment criteria/processes/procedures should be adopted for evaluating the future talents in research universities?

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Dean for Access, Inclusion & Student Programs at the University of Colorado Boulder
The College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for an Assistant Dean for Access, Inclusion & Student Programs. This position provides vision and leadership for the recruitment and success of outstanding and diverse students, faculty and staff. The position leads our efforts to make pathways into our college available and accessible to all students. This position also leads a suite of student programs that improve and complement our engineering curricular experience. The Assistant Dean for Access, Inclusion, and Student Programs is a member of the College’s senior leadership team, as a participant in the Dean’s Cabinet and the Administrative Council. The incumbent works closely with the Dean, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Education, the Associate Dean for Students, and other college leaders to promote student achievement and inclusion.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Professor, Department of Engineering Fundamentals, University of Louisville
The Department of Engineering Fundamentals at the University of Louisville is seeking candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank with a preferred start date of August 1, 2020. The successful candidate is expected to develop an active research program in STEM education and have a desire to improve engineering education through the promotion and use of evidence-based teaching. The candidate’s research program is expected to include collaboration with other engineering departments, and members of the research group GEARS, the Guild for Engineering Education, Achievement, Retention and Success. GEARS includes faculty and graduate students in the School of Engineering, the Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville.
The successful candidate will be an active participant in the instructional teams responsible for the delivery of Engineering Tools, Methods and Practices I and II, a two semester sequence of courses for freshman engineering students that introduces students to the practice of engineering, provides an introduction to the methods, tools, and skills necessary for success in engineering, and culminates with the completion of a team project in the school’s maker space, the Engineering Garage.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Post-doctoral scholar in arts, humanities, STEM, or social sciences with a focus on black studies at UC Santa Barbara
The Center for Black Studies Research at the University of California Santa Barbara invites applications for two postdoctoral researcher positions for the academic year 2020-21. The research areas may include the fields and disciplines within Arts, Humanities, STEM or Social Sciences with a focus on Black Studies and/or Black communities in the African Diaspora (Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia/Oceania). Part of the Fellowship (25%) is devoted to developing the Center’s programs, which may involve mentoring undergraduate research fellows. No teaching is required. The fellowship will provide a salary based on the candidate’s qualifications. Research and travel allowance may be provided. Health insurance will be provided. This position is a 12-month appointment beginning July 1, 2020 with a possibility of 2nd year appointment, upon evaluation.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Instructor position in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at University of Colorado Boulder
Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time instructor to teach in its undergraduate program. The instructor will be a member of the AES faculty and will participate in course development and assessment, faculty governance, and university service. Candidates are sought who have an MS or PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, astronautical engineering, or a related field. Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment. Preference will be given to applicants with prior university teaching experience, years of experience, and/or graduate degrees.
Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Candidates are expected to fit in to curriculum groups focused on a) fluids and aerodynamics and/or b) dynamics and controls. This includes courses related to dynamics, aircraft performance, rockets, orbits, and attitude dynamics & control. Engineering design or operational experience in one or both of these areas is ideal. An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required. A successful candidate in this position will teach courses during the academic year and summer terms.
