ERM Announcements, November 1, 2019

Happy belated Halloween, ERM Members! Here in the Leonhard Center, we celebrated Halloween with the theme of the Wild West. All the Leonhard Center faculty, staff, and students dressed up and decorated the office as an old Western town (pictures of the Penn State College of Engineering celebration available at http://bit.ly/2ptGdjj). Not only do we have a lot of fun on Halloween, but we’ve found that annual traditions, such as our over-the-top Halloween celebration, contribute to an amazingly positive workplace culture!

Speaking of positive culture, I wanted to briefly mention our ERM strategic goals for 2019-2021 and to thank all of the attendees at the Business Meeting held at FIE two weeks ago. As discussed during the meeting, ERM has launched several task forces to work on our strategic goals. I have listed each goal below with the ERM Directors who will be leading these efforts:

Be financially stable and rebuild reserves (Holly Matusovich and Matt Ohland)
Be perceived as a community where its members feel welcome, included, and that they have a voice (Nadia Kellam and Justin Major)
Be leaders in having conference sessions that are interactive, innovative, and engaging (Stephanie Cutler and others TBD).
Have a greater number of members who are nominated and potentially win ASEE awards (Sam Brunhaver, Aditya Johri, and James Huff)
I will keep you posted on some of the recommendations and changes that we make, although suggestions from the greater ERM Community are more than welcome. If any of you have any suggestions on how ERM can work to meet these goals, please send me an e-mail.

1. NSF ANNOUNCEMENT: 2020 NSF ENG CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop

The 2020 NSF ENG CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop will be held March 31 – April 2, 2020, in Arlington, VA, just outside of Washington, DC. The proposal writing workshop aims to provide junior faculty who plan to submit a CAREER Award proposal to a program in the NSF’s Directorate for Engineering (ENG) with a CAREER proposal review experience and a forum in which they can interact with NSF Program Directors and recent NSF CAREER awardees.

Attendees of the 2020 NSF ENG CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop will benefit from:

• Six mock proposal reviews by panels

• Plenaries from engineering leaders

• Focus sessions on time management and effective proposal writing

• Guidance on the integration of education and research

• Networking opportunities and industry-focused discussions

• Interaction across disciplines and engineering schools nationwide

2. CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Issue of SEE: Theories and Methods in Engineering Education

As part of our mission to expand the conversations among engineering education researchers, SEE Co-Editors Shane Brown and Marie Paretti invite papers for a special issue of the journal exploring theories, methods, and the interplay between them in our field from a variety of perspectives. As an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of education, social sciences, and education, engineering education often borrows and adapts frameworks and methods from other fields to guide our research. In this special issue, we invite authors to deepen our conversation around these practices by bringing a critical lens to them. Questions to consider might include the following: How do we as a field use theories, and to what end? How do we choose methods, and what are the implications of those choices? What are the relationships between theory and method in our work?

3. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Reviewers for International Journal of Engineering, Social Justice, and Peace
The International Journal of Engineering, Social Justice, and Peace (IJESJP) has received an increased amount of submissions the past year, and we are seeking participants who are available to provide peer-reviews for manuscripts on a range of themes, including:

Alternative practices and conceptual frameworks of engineering that contribute to community empowerment, especially as related to the way engineering is organized and managed and what it is that engineers do and who it is they do it for;
Mainstream practices and conceptual frameworks of engineering that work at cross purposes to social justice and peace, including the relationship between engineering and dominant economic, government, and cultural institutions;
The relationship between engineering and the publics it serves, including needs assessments, engineer-community engagements, public dialogue surrounding engineering work, and engineers’ roles in technology policy making;
Engineering education strategies aimed at promoting social justice and/or peace, including matters of pedagogy, curricula design, and academic values and institutions.
Our aim is to create a peer review process that is constructive and supportive of one another in the work for social justice. Feedback to authors should be encouraging and welcoming. It should also be critical in the sense of making recommendations toward the end of furthering the work.

Because we are an interdisciplinary journal, we welcome a broad diversity of perspectives in the peer review process. 4. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Open House in the Department of Engineering Education at The Ohio State University

Mark your calendars! The Department of Engineering Education (EED) at The Ohio State University is excited to announce our second annual Open House! Join us on our campus on Thursday, November 14, from 5:00-7:00pm as we showcase our latest research and teaching innovations! The event will take place in Scott Lab, room E100, and will feature poster presentations from our internationally-recognized faculty, as well as their graduate and undergraduate students EED faculty and staff will be available to answer questions about our First Year Engineering Program, Multidisciplinary Capstone Program, Technical Communications, our ongoing partnership with KEEN, and our first year as an official PhD program. 5. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Engineering PhD Research Experiences Study

We are researchers at Purdue University studying how the research experiences of engineering PhD students prepare them for professional practice. We are hoping that this message and the survey link below are shared by students, faculty, and professionals across engineering. The purpose of this study is to advance basic knowledge about the variation and scope of the engineering PhD student research experiences so that the results could be shared with the wider community to influence change for education and evaluation purposes.

We are asking engineering PhD students to participate in an online survey about their PhD research experiences. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Answers will remain completely confidential. The survey will ask questions about a student’s current PhD research experiences and research group organization style. A student must be 18 years or older and an engineering PhD student to participate in the study. 6. ASSOCIATE EDITOR SEARCH: Journal of Engineering Education – Associate Editors Search

The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE), which serves to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education, is currently accepting applications for one or more volunteer Associate Editors. Associate Editors are an integral part of the JEE Editorial Board and ensure the quality and timeliness of published material. Associate Editors serve 3-year terms that may be renewed.

An Associate Editor’s primary responsibilities are (1) reading manuscripts submitted to JEE, (2) recruiting and selecting appropriate, well qualified and responsible reviewers to review the manuscripts, (3) synthesizing reviewers’ comments and feedback, (4) integrating that feedback with their own evaluative and constructive report reflecting the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, and (5) making a recommendation to the JEE Editor. Other duties include attending quarterly (virtual) meetings of the JEE Editorial Board, selecting the annual Wickenden award winner, and completing various tasks related to maintaining the quality and relevance of JEE such as special issues and guest editorials. Generally, an Associate Editor will be assigned 12-16 manuscripts annually, and the duties of the position will require approximately 8 – 12 hours per month.

To qualify for the position, an Associate Editor must have an earned doctoral degree, be an active researcher in engineering education or a related field, and have experience publishing in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education research. Preferred qualifications include previous experience as a peer reviewer of a scholarly journal, publication experience in peer-reviewed journals, and rank at the associate professor (or equivalent) level. In particular, Associate Editors with expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods are sought, but all areas will be considered. 7. ASSISTANT EDITOR SEARCH: Chemical Engineering Education – Assistant Editors Search

Chemical Engineering Education (CEE), the premier journal for educational scholarship in chemical engineering and related fields, is seeking applications for up to four (4) Assistant Editor positions available within the journal. CEE is published by the Chemical Engineering Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Potential financial compensation for the Assistant Editor positions will be decided by the Publications Board on an annual basis. Each Assistant Editor position will handle paper editorial duties consistent with their interest and expertise. Additionally, each Assistant Editor position will likely be assigned oversight and management over an aspect of the journal (e.g. social media, educator profiles, etc.)

8. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral researcher, Tufts University

The Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) and Institute for Research on Learning and Instruction (IRLI) invite applications for a joint full-time postdoctoral scholar to work on studying undergraduate teaching and learning. The initial appointment is for the academic year 2020-2021, renewable for at least a second year. The position focuses on undergraduate teaching and learning in introductory science and engineering, working across two units at Tufts: The CEEO has a K-16 mission of both outreach and education research; IRLI has a mission of supporting research on learning and instruction taking place within Tufts courses. The two units collaborate in studies situated within the Tufts School of Engineering.

The postdoctoral scholar will be a key member of both units. They will be mentored by IRLI Director Dr. David Hammer and other IRLI faculty, with reporting requirements to CEEO Director Dr. Merredith Portsmore. The scholar will be significant research responsibilities, mainly but perhaps not exclusively in engineering education, including to participate in data collection, analyses, and disseminating research through presentations and publications. They will also have responsibilities in project management, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and as appropriate the development of new proposals for research. The position requires a PhD in a STEM discipline, STEM Education, or a related field. and significant experience in education research; we are especially interested in applicants with experience studying undergraduate education, responsive teaching, science/engineering curriculum development, working with university faculty or research mentorship of new educational researchers.

9. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Postdoctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholar, University of New Hampshire

UNH is seeking a creative Postdoctoral Scholar who can make fundamental contributions to the broad discipline of Engineering Education. The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct their own research and work closely with a senior faulty mentor to develop an independent research program. The Scholar will build on current strengths in the college in this area and have opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations across campus and the state, including the New Hampshire Center for Multiscale Modeling and Manufacturing of Biomaterials (NH BioMade) and the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute. We encourage a breadth of focus areas including but not limited to remediation programs to improve retention, incorporation of active learning strategies, self‐efficacy of students, diversity program assessment, benefits of technologies in the classroom, interdisciplinary program development, improvement of spatial ability, and assessment of recruitment programs.

Additional professional development support will be provided in the form of participation in faculty development academies with other early career tenure‐track faculty, coaching by senior faculty colleagues, workshops on teaching and learning, graduate student advising, involvement in department activities, and support funds. 10. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Teaching Specialist – Michigan State University

The College of Engineering at Michigan State University is seeking candidates for a fixed-term teaching specialist position, with possible successive appointments based on performance and budget availability, to support instruction in the Applied Engineering Sciences program.

11. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Virginia Tech, Collegiate Faculty position in the Department of Engineering Education

The Department of Engineering Education (ENGE) at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a full-time, academic year, non-tenure-track Collegiate Faculty position. Applications are invited from individuals dedicated to undergraduate teaching and student engagement. Candidates who have experience related to teaching and developing courses in engineering problem solving, design, and professionalism at the undergraduate level are sought. Experience with teaching the application of software tools (including, for example, CAD, computational programming, and/or data acquisition) is desirable, as well as experience teaching in a project-based learning environment.

This Collegiate Faculty position will be at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Collegiate Faculty members teach undergraduate courses, contribute to curriculum development and assessment of the undergraduate program, engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and serve as a valued contributor within the department on committees (e.g., committees focused on undergraduate programs, diversity and inclusion). The R.B. 15. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Professor of Practice, Master of Engineering Management Program

The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (http://engineering.unl.edu) seeks to hire a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice in the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program, to begin Fall 2019. The MEM is a professional graduate degree for working professionals. This non-thesis, 30-credit-hour program prepares students for managing the business challenges in their engineering career. In partnership with the MBA program at UNL, the MEM curriculum strikes a balance between business acumen and technical skills to effectively lead in an engineering environment. 16. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – Teaching postdoc position

The Department of Computer Science (CS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the “Future Faculty” program. 17. POSITION ANNOUCEMENT: University of Georgia, Lecturer Position in Electrical or Computer Engineering

The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Lecturer position expected to begin in January 1, 2020. The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the three schools in the College of Engineering at UGA, which is one of the newest engineering colleges in the nation. The school consists of two undergraduate degree programs (Electrical Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering) as well as two graduate programs including M.S. in engineering and Ph.D. in engineering. Due to the unprecedented growth of our undergraduate programs, the primary duty of the selected candidate will be to teach 12 credit hours per semester. Successful applicants must be able to teach courses in electrical and computer systems engineering. Areas of particular teaching need include both lecture and laboratory instruction in the following general areas: Core first and second your courses in the ECE curriculum (Intro to ECE, Electrical Circuits and Electronics), ECE design courses (Design Methodologies and Senior Design Capstone), and Informatics (Introduction Informatics and Informatics Electives). A Ph.D. in Engineering or related discipline is required. 24. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: 4 Postdoc-Level Positions in STEM Education at Texas State University (1 program-focused; 3 research-focused)

We are advertising four postdoctoral-level positions related to instructional change in undergraduate STEM. The positions are associated with three recently awarded NSF grants: (1) “Building Capacity: Creating Faculty-Student Communities for Culturally Relevant Institutional Change” (2 positions); (2) “Furthering the Work of Undergraduate STEM Transformation: Modeling Instructional Change Teams”; and (3) “Developing Faculty Resources of Evidence-Based Practices that Improve Learning and Equity in STEM.” One of the positions will primarily focus on programmatic work and may involve synergistic research activities. The other three positions will primarily focus on research and will involve synergistic programmatic activities as appropriate.

Minimum qualifications for all positions are:

• PhD in a STEM and/or Education field

• Commitment to counteracting systemic inequities in STEM

• Motivation and ability to engage with diverse students and junior researchers

• Motivation and ability to engage with STEM faculty
