1. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: REVIEW APPRENTICE FACULTY GRANT APPLICATIONS

We are seeking volunteers to review applications for this year’s ERM Apprentice Faculty Grant (AFG) program. Please contact Nadia Kellam (nkellam@asu.edu) & Samantha Brunhaver (sbrunhav@asu.edu) to express your interest by February 28th.
The commitment requires only a couple of hours to read and rate up to 3 application packages. You will be provided specific review criteria and responses will be collected online.

Please volunteer for this important activity in support of expanding the engineering education researcher pool. Past award winners and senior engineering education researchers are particularly encouraged to help.

With thanks from your ERM AFG committee co-chairs, Nadia Kellam & Samantha Brunhaver

2. ERM DIVISION OFFICER ELECTIONS

Each year ERM holds elections for 2 Director positions in addition to the Chair position (odd years) or the Secretary/Treasurer position (even years). The nominating committee will officially commence the process with a call for nominations on March 1 — stay tuned, and start thinking about who you might nominate next month for one of these open positions!

3. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: INVITE TO VIRTUAL CARD SORTING ACTIVITY FOR DEVELOPING A RESEARCH IMPACT FRAMEWORK

As an active member of the engineering education research community, you are invited to participate in a virtual card-sorting activity that will contribute to the development of a framework that characterizes what it means for engineering education research and development (R&D) to have an “impact”. By participating in this study, you will develop a better understanding of how “research impact” is defined in scholarly literature, advance our understanding of what it looks like in our context, and contribute to the development of a shared language among engineering education researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. This research is supported by National Science Foundation grant number EEC-1564629. (If you participated in Fall 2016, you can ignore this invitation.

The activity will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Your responses will be confidential, and anonymous; and you are free to exit the activity at any time. If you choose to participate, please complete the activity within the next two weeks. Provided below are the link the IRB; a short YouTube video explaining the project and tutorial on how to complete the card sorting activity; PDF summarizing activity instructions as an alternative to the video; and a link to the e-card sorting activity itself. We appreciate your willingness to participate and value your feedback. If you have any questions about this study or are interested in the results of this project, please contact me at jeremi.london@asu.edu.

12. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: FOUNDING CHAIR FOR THE SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL, CIVIL, AGRICULTURAL, AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING – UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

Dear colleagues,

I’m writing to bring to your attention a new leadership position being advertised within the UGA College of Engineering. Over the past four years enrollment in our college has tripled to 2,000 students and we have hired about 50 new faculty and staff. Due to our growth our college has created three new interdisciplinary Schools, including one in Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical Engineering.

Our college is seeking an exceptional individual to be the “Founding Chair” for the School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical Engineering within our college. It is an exciting opportunity since the new Chair will be able to lead the growth of a new academic unit within a well-established, Top 20 public university. The position will be similar to that of a department head or department chair with the added focus on enhancing the interdisciplinary connections across programs.

This could be an opportunity for somebody with an engineering education background to have an impact on a larger scale and shape the face of engineering education at the level of an entire college. The recently established Engineering Education Transformations Institute in the College of Engineering at UGA provides a wide range of further synergistic opportunities.

If you do know of individuals who are seeking new leadership opportunities please feel free to pass along the following links or contact me for a pdf of the position description. You are also welcome to send nominations to me.
