ERM Announcements, November 15, 2021

Dear ERM members,

 

It has felt like the last two weeks since I last sent out the newsletter have flown. The ASEE abstract deadline is today! You can submit to Slayte at this link: https://asee.slayte.com/calls/detail/78bcc47d-2846-11ec-907b-0e0ce905385c. Just as a note, you cannot add co-authors until the paper, not abstract, submission process (I spent several minutes trying to edit my submission before I grasped what the text on the website meant). I hope that many of us will be able to interact at a future in-person conference safely.

 

Last week, we had our fall ERM business meeting. Dr. Alex Mejia, our ERM Secretary/Treasurer, brought up the current proposed and enacted measures by the unelected Financial Oversight and Management Board in Puerto Rico (https://www.thenation.com/article/activism/university-puerto-rico-protests/). In the past week, confirmation hearings for the debt adjustment plan have begun. Opportunity for future generations to pursue education is a key part of engineering education and is aligned with our ongoing conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Dr. Mejia has been advocating, along with several other of our community members, on social media and via other outlets. The current proposed cuts will severely limit opportunities for Puerto Ricans; efforts have already included reducing the public University of Puerto Rico’s budget by half, increasing tuition threefold, closing a third of the island’s public K-12 schools.

 

I did not know all of the details of the situation in Puerto Rico. And, I felt that there was an opportunity to amplify this concern and requested action through this platform, particularly in light of our continued goals as a division. There may be various ways to engage with this issue. These efforts may include learning more about the situation, writing a statement of support for UPR and our colleagues in your spaces of influence, and something else. I hope we as a division can continue to learn from and with each other and work as a community for positive change in engineering education.

  1. CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS: Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering (JWM), Themed Issue on Black Males in STEM

 

The Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering (JWM) is inviting manuscript submissions for an upcoming Themed Issue on Black Males in STEM. This issue is focused on manuscripts that address broadening the participation of Black males in STEM across a variety of continuums (i.e., Pre-K to Workplace ), including nurturing STEM academic and career interests among Black young men and boys at the elementary, secondary, and/or postsecondary levels; retaining Black males in computer science and/or engineering at minority serving institutions and/or predominately White institutions; fostering STEM identity in high school and/or the collegiate level among Black males; increasing the number of Black male STEM faculty at colleges and universities; and increasing the number of Black male STEM K-12 teachers.

  1. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: NETI-1A and 1B Online Workshops Open

 

The National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI) has been offering courses since 1991, reaching nearly 2500 participants from over 350 different institutions. We are particularly thankful that we have been able to continue to offer these valuable workshops online to meet the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. All NETI Workshops are conducted by Drs. Susan Lord, Matt Ohland and Michael Prince.  Workshops are highly interactive and provide opportunities for the participants to plan applications of the content to their own courses. We will be offering the following two workshops this coming January:

 

NETI-1A: Introduction to Successful Teaching for STEM Faculty, January 2-3, 2022, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. EST. This online workshop is designed for instructors who have taught for 1-5 years or more experienced faculty looking for an introduction to instructional design. NETI-1A focuses on effective strategies for getting started in STEM courses in both face-to-face and online classes, covering content traditionally offered in the in-person NETI-1 workshop. Topics explored in the NETI-1A workshop include: crafting meaningful learning objectives, developing effective assessment, designing policies to support student and faculty success, and common crises and their management in STEM classes.

 

NETI-1B: Strategies For Promoting Student Engagement, January 4-5, 2022, 1:00 – 5:00 pm EST. This online workshop is designed for instructors who have taught at least one year and is also useful for experienced faculty interested in improving their teaching. NETI-1B focuses on research-based strategies for engaging students in both face-to-face and online classes, covering content traditionally offered in the in-person NETI-1 workshop. Topics explored in the NETI-1B workshop include: enhancing student motivation, implementing proven student-engagement techniques (active learning), and engaging all students in an inclusive class environment.

 

While these workshops are offered online, the focus will be on how to engage students in both face-to-face and online classes. The registration fee for each workshop is $400 per participant ($800 for both), and includes an electronic version of presentation materials and other resources. We invite you to register for any of the workshops and to pass this notice along to faculty who would benefit from this program.

  1. SEEKING SUBMISSIONS: ASEE Year of Impact on Racial Equity—90-day Equity Challenge

 

ASEE’s Year of Impact on Racial Equity (2021 – 2022) is well underway. The major tenets of this initiative can be described by three pillars. The pillars are focused on engaging engineering and engineering technology students, faculty and administrators in colleges of engineering and engineering technology, and P-12 parents and guardians, respectively. This announcement is focused on the first of these three groups.

 

Engineering and engineering technology (E&ET) student organizations offer opportunities for students to develop peer networks, gain valuable co-curricular experiences, apply knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-world challenges, and prepare for future success in the workplace. Participation in engineering student organizations can offer students access to career opportunities including mentoring, internships/co-ops, job opportunities. The access and experiences that these opportunities afford are valuable and formative for an engineering student’s success and persistence. But the question we should ask ourselves is: are all students able to take advantage of, and benefit from, these opportunities? In this 90-day Equity Challenge, we challenge the leaders of student organizations to identify and address barriers that exist within the local chapter of your organization which may prevent equitable and inclusive engagement by all students. At the end of the 90-day challenge, fifteen (15) teams will be selected to win a $1,000 prize for their organization, have their work highlighted on a national platform, and be featured in multiple press releases.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Learning Sciences Research Institute at University Of Illinois Chicago

 

The Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI) is searching for a postdoctoral research associate with expertise in facilitating small group processes and supporting STEM faculty professional development. The two-year appointment is full time, starting 1/1/2022 and ending 12/31/2023, with possibility for renewal pending availability of funds. The program associate will join a collaborative action research project led by LSRI, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS), the College of Engineering (COE), Student Affairs, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE), and the Office of Diversity (OOD) at the University of Illinois-Chicago. The project aims to achieve institutional transformation by establishing and supporting departmental action teams (DATs) to investigate barriers to undergraduate student success within LAS and COE departments and explore solutions to those strategies in collaboration with faculty in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The project also integrates faculty professional development for DATs through the implementation of an instructor credential program focused on inclusive teaching. The project is funded by a federal grant from the National Science Foundation.

The Project Manager will provide operational support to the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Program in the Undergraduate Academics Office. This position will facilitate the various actions required to successfully offer and conduct the Vertically Integrated Project Programs. The Project Manager will spearhead the development, coordination, and execution of student teams working on faculty research and innovation projects within the Vertically Integrated Projects Program. The manager will direct all aspects of analysis, evaluation, and educational outcomes for the VIP Program including student recruitment, applications, admission, enrollment, student success, diversity, graduation, retention, and job placement. About the NYU Vertically Integrated Projects Program:
Vertically Integrated Projects are one-credit hour courses that offer students the opportunity to work on faculty research and innovation projects for curricular credit. VIP teams are also made up of 5-40 students of all undergraduate academic ranks & disciplines and organized into a professional management structure. Students enroll in the one to three credits for at least three semesters and up to six. The long term engagement on the project allows students to grow into leader and mentor roles and ideally create a sustainable cycle of students, as 3rd and 4th year students train new 1st and 2nd year students. This experiential learning opportunity enables students to build a portfolio of projects that will help them to secure jobs. The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks dynamic, career-oriented candidates to teach undergraduate laboratory courses. Applicants will be expected to teach both hands-on and computational undergraduate laboratory courses. Three years of experience teaching college level engineering and demonstrated interest in teaching is preferred. Candidates with an Engineering Education degree are strongly encouraged to apply.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Postdoctoral Position at UC Irvine

 

The UC Irvine Education Research Initiative (ERI) and School of Biological Sciences are jointly looking for a Postdoctoral Scholar with expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies to carry out discipline-based educational research (DBER) exploring teaching and learning in higher education under the supervision of Dr. Brian Sato (Professor of Teaching, Molecular Biology & Biochemistry; Associate Dean, Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation). This is a two-year position with a proposed start date of January 1, 2022 (negotiable).

The University of California, Irvine has a vibrant and collaborative community of discipline-based education researchers, education researchers, and STEM educators striving to provide our highly diverse student population with a premier learning experience. The Education Research Initiative is housed within the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) and aims to bring together researchers across the campus interested in conducting education research and implementing this research into practice. The Postdoctoral Scholar will collaborate with UCI faculty, postdocs, and graduate students, primarily within STEM, Education, and Social Science disciplines, on ERI projects. A main focus of the work will be an NSF-funded project (DUE 1821724) to examine the impact of teaching-focused faculty on student and faculty outcomes, using a variety of data sources (institutional data, student and faculty survey and interview data, classroom observation data, and social network data, among others). In particular, we are interested in exploring faculty conceptions of teaching and learning, their professional identity, and their perceptions regarding their role and fit within their departments and how these constructs relate to student outcomes.

Relevant research projects will involve survey design and analysis, accessing, cleaning, and analyzing institutional data, and modeling of nested data. Other potential areas that the postdoc could contribute to involve coding and analysis of interview data, social network analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in an Education, Social Science, or STEM Education discipline; experience in conducting research on teaching and learning; outstanding verbal and written communication skills; a successful record of publication and presentations; and the ability to work well with university faculty. Grant writing experience is also a plus and the individual will have opportunities to lead proposal writing efforts.

  1. POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Assistant Professor/Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering, University of Southern Indiana

 

The Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education at the University of Southern Indiana invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Engineering with a start date of August 2022. A doctorate in Electrical Engineering or closely related field is required. ABD candidates with a Masters in Electrical Engineering, or closely related field, will be considered at the Instructor level. This position includes teaching assignments in electrical engineering and technology courses, as well as freshman engineering. The selected candidate is also expected to direct student design projects.   1. POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: Assistant Tenure-Track Faculty Position, Workforce Education at the University of Georgia

 

The Department of Career & Information Studies at the University of Georgia invites applications for a position as an Assistant Professor of Workforce Education to begin August 2022.
